I was building on creative mode and had a superflat world just for the large open space. After I got quite a bit done that I would like to keep, I realized, Wait there's going to be slimes flooding into everywhere all the time.
I was wondering if there was a way I could stop the normal (or at least the slime) spawning for that map so that I don't have to redo everything in a normal world.
(or, if possible, move some structures from one world into another...)
That does work, but I do want some monsters to be able to appear for something else...I just don't want the town to have litterally 300 slimes in it lol
In one of the new snapshots, there's a block that can execute commands when powered with redstone. You could use that, and switch difficulty when a player steps on it.
Otherwise, unless you switch it to peaceful, I can't think of anything that would stop the slimes from spawning. Unless you move everything up to about y:40.
The reason Superflat is in a constant state of slime apocalypse is because the entire world is at level 4. Build at 41+ and the slimes won't spawn anymore.
I realize this is too late now, but it's a good future reference... and it would probably be easier to rebuild your stuff if you can fly down to use the original as a reference.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."

Better yet, have it execute the new gamerule command that comes with the update:
This might work: Download WorldPainter and load up your world in it. Then select the biomes brush and mark the desired area as a Mushroom Island biome. Make sure you make a backup before doing this?
Ah, I hadn't thought of this! Either way works I suppose lol. Wonder if it gets rid of the hostiles already spawned though? Peaceful does.
The description says, "Stops mobs from spawning naturally," so I would assume not. You could quickly switch to peaceful and back if you wanted to get rid of the already spawned mobs. The best thing about doMobSpawning is that you can still spawn your own mobs for adventure maps with it disabled.
I'm trying to make a modded COD map so it would be helpful if only like, zombies and pig zombies spawn (using spawners), while other mobs don't spawn. I tried using the doMobSpawning command but it stopped the spawners too. Any ideas???
/gamerule doMobSpawning false works! I tried to last night after seeing this post, thanks for asking the question, i was about to buy a server so I could find a way to turn off mobs. Glad I don't have to spend more money to do that.
Build it like 50 blocks in the air, use torches, or use the world editor found when you create the world to do some fancy stuff I can't explain but you'll have to look at yourself.

You can set the biome to Mushroom Island, which only allows mob spawners to spawn mobs; there are MCEdit filters that allow you to change the biome. Note that Mooshrooms will also spawn, unless they require mycelium to spawn, in a similar manner to other passive mobs requiring grass (can't find any information regarding this in the Wiki).

I was afraied of that :/
I already made a normal world and fianlly got a decent flat area made, now to just rebuild stuff I guess.
I didn't have to much done on what I planned but I did had a good full days work done on it (a nice house, a huge fountain and most of the pathways)
/gamerule doMobSpawning false
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

Would be nice if they could choose to disable certain mobs from spawning, not just all at one time.

You can just call me Canary.
How not to look like a total fool in the forum games

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
But he wants to have hostile mobs spawing just not slimes.
Use the redstone ready preset and you will be ready to go.
Baseball, then Minecraft.
That's one of my favorite commands because you still get hungry but don't have to deal with creepers etc.
