To all the people who are spouting about what makes PC or XBOX better: Get off this post. That's not what the original poster was asking about; it doesn't matter who's right or wrong; if you don't have an answer to his question, don't bother posting.
I found this post because my kids are wanting to transition from the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft to the PC version cause they saw daddy playing with horses and witches, and even though they are mastering the mouse+WASD controls, they are still missing the ability to play with two players at a time (and the easier way of crafting on the Xbox, but that is another issue for another time. I'm hoping they'll eventually get over that).
I am about to try the previously suggested Joypad/splitscreen Mod but it is only currently available for MC 1.6.2. If I find anything else, and/or when I have feedback about that Mod, I'll chime back in.
This forum thread is the first hit (for me) on Google for "minecraft how to use xbox controller with pc version." It doesn't matter what anyone thinks is better; it doesn't matter if torrenting is legal or not. Answer the question, bump (like me :-P), or (for lack of a better acronym even though this my first post and I don't want to step on any toes,) gtfo.
No on-topic updates though? There have been version updates since the original post. Has anyone heard of a better option than a key mapper? bryanschmidty, did it work for you?
It is possible to play PC MC with a controller. I have done it. Use Joytokey http://joytokey.net/en/ it's simple to use and setup so your controller functions as keyboard and mouse. It works perfectly with my PS2 controller (though I still prefer kboard&mouse), maybe it's your solution.
Unlike Xpadder, this is completely free and you don't need to buy it or go pirate
Xbox360 version is by far above and beyond pc. Any console will always be better because they are designed for gaming...pc's are not inheritently for gaming but wide range of other applications. Arguing is futile. Oh and it's spelled jockey by the way. Just saying.
@SqueakyG FYI....either thumb stick is mousable.
*facepalm* Wow how can someone be this stupid? PC's can be made for gaming! Not only that they are way better, they can be WAY faster than an Xbox 360 and not only that the graphic are usually better than the Xbox 360 (and yes I own one)
In what way exactly is xbox gaming any better than pc? I understand how you people who dont really know much about pc gaming assume that its terrible and not meant for gaming but it actually is good for gaming. Pcs can actually run at a solid 60 fps unlike consoles that run on 30. Pcs are easily a better gaming console than xbox. Xbox gaming can only run at a mere 30 fps while upper-end pcs can get beyond 200 fps in minecraft. It is much cheaper in the long run because you wont have to pay for the live memberships that pcs dont have. Xbox gaming is simply not the way to go if you wish to start gaming so please rethink your sources and I reccomend that you not to post things that you dont even know anything about.

Look, the argument about console versus PC is just stupid, if you prefer console, stick to console, if you prefer PC, stick to PC, either way you're still playing a game and having fun while doing it.
A console is limited in terms of performance compared to PC, but do the games that most people play need to run at 60 FPS? Or is that just for the e-pen? Playing a shooter at 60 FPS may be better as you interpret the game as running smoother and therefore interpret inputs as being more responsive, but GTA or any other sort of game doesn't require 60 FPS, 30 will suffice if the game runs at 30 for the majority of the time. If it dips below 30, that's an entirely different story and should be taken to the game's developer, not the console's developer.
Consoles are designed to be used by people who don't want to go to the effort of building an expensive gaming rig to just play COD, GTA, or Minecraft even, consoles are designed to be used by people who don't have the money to purchase high-end gear, they're designed for the sort of gamer who doesn't care about performance and cares about having fun.
PCs are TECHNICALLY designed for office work and computation of data sets, HOWEVER due to the growth of computers in the commercial market people use computers for all forms of entertainment, including games. A PC is designed to be used by people who don't mind and/or want to go to the effort of absolutely getting the best performance out of games, PCs are designed to be used by people who know what they're buying and/or have money that they're willing to blow on a computer for gaming, they're designed for the sort of gamer who wants a personalised rig that can run graphically-intensive games with maxed out settings at 60 FPS.
Two different segments of the market, you cannot cleanly compare the two. Console == PC, it's down to the user as to which platform is the best, I'm personally a hybrid gamer, I play on both.
Besides, this argument was fought out and stopped back in 2013, please don't bring it up.

-Pixel Format Not Accelerated Problems in Windows 10 Reasons-
1.Old Intel CPU (2nd Gen and older) and these aren't ready for Windows 10.Please downgrade to an older version
2-Slow/Intel GPU (But sometimes Intel GPU just work fine from 3rd Gen CPU or newer on Win10)
3-Update Drivers (recommended for Dedicated GPU but not always for Intel's)
[This signature isn't to critisice Intel/Microsft or any thing of this sort, I am criticising You and You idiotness for not checking the requirements for Windows 10] (If you are annoyed of the ammount of the thread with a "Pixel Format Not accelerated" problem, plz Share this signature
Back on topic, yes, you can use a controller as long as your game is modded. This mod allows in-game support for game-pads and even allows for stuff such as split-screen. As long as you know how to install mods (which in itself is very easy) then using the software will be no problem. Basically the rule goes (as long as the mod is installed) if your PC can detect the gamepad then it'll be usable in the game. So if you're PC doesn't detect the gamepad then you won't be able to use it.
