So many red scribbles.
The pigmen were a wonderous tribe. This was when the nether was less... deadly. It had many different crops (grown on what turned to soulsand), but only Nether Wart survived over many generations. The pigmen constructed large lanterns out of glowstone, which they mined far down, in huge veins. The nether also had a bounty of gold. All the gold there is gone, as the pigmen mined it. Magma Cubes used to be peaceful. They weren't much different. Ghasts evolved from a species of wall-climbing, jelly-like beasts, which were immune to lava and fire but did not spit fire. The pigmen advanced from small huts made out of Netherrack (which used to be much stronger) to large labrinths made out of Nether Brick. Nether Brick is made from the old, stronger, Netherrack. After a long time of peace and harmony, Endermen made a visit. The Ender is a corruption. The Endermen ravaged crops, killed pigmen, infected peaceful things like Magma Cubes and Wall Jelly. However, although all living pigmen are dead, the undead ones seek vengeance on anything. Their vision is blurry and off-color. They see the player as taller and darker. By killing them, you have put their souls to rest. The gold is a symbol of their past. Many lanterns exist today, in coral-like forms on the roof of the endless caves.
The blocks and mobs back before the Ender corruption:
Netherrock, SymSand, Nether Brick, Nether Wart, Nether Wheat, Nexu Grass, Nether Corn, Golden Netherrock, Glowstone Ore, Pigmen, Magma Cubes (peaceful), Wall Jelly, Humans (they visited rarely before the infection).
Oh, and Endermen are why portals require Obsidian. They used to need Netherrock, which could rarely be found in the natural world. All of the world's Netherrock was replaced by Cobblestone. Moss Stone formed by it aging and growing stuff and things on it.
The nether used to be the overworld. However, when the testificates became greedy and started to consume too much resources, they corrupted a spirit they worshipped. This now evil spirit (which would later become the enderdragon) turned this overworld into the nether, while the testificates developed a new dimension and moved there. During the conversion to the nether, all pigs became zombie pigmen, and they picked up all gold left behind by the testificates.
Just part of a huge story I have in my mind, but haven't found the time to post.
Gold is like a fungus to them. While the pigman were alive, they avoided it, but now that they are dead they don't care. It spreads over their skin like a moss.
They used to live in the Overworld, but they moved to the Nether because of false advertising showing the Nether as a tropical Paradise, and brought the gold with them. The Ghasts shot them and they died. Nuff said.

The pigmen that rise from the dead have been chewing their gold coins into nuggets.
