It seems like a lot of servers are using anti-grief plugins. I understand they help keep people's stuff from getting destroyed, but I personally liked the challenge of hiding my house, and always having to keep an eye out for potential raiders. Plus, it's always satisfying looting a house come across, and the inevitable reactions from the player you stole from.
Factions suck though, imo. Especially when all the Admins and brown nosers get in a faction together, you might as well call it quits. I loved factions when I first tried a faction server, but too many faction servers are corrupt with owner or admin factions, that either tp to you, or have super enchanted weapons.
Anyhoo, the main point here is I see way too many servers with complete protection. Even when I put griefing in the search I still end up getting a page full of "anti-grief" "grief protection". Just wonderig if anyone else has this problem, or if I'm just searching for the wrong thing.
I think the kind of server your looking for are anarchy servers. Also some people like to just build together instead of worrying about their stuff being stolen.

Back a while ago, around the release of beta 1.0. servers did not have protection, people built in peace, even though PvP was on. Thats the server your looking for. The tag is Anarchy, but most people think of it as PvP.
It was an epic time. Asking the new guys on the server if they would like to join you in a town, run far away, build and rule an empire.
On sad note: These servers are super rare. The closest thing is PvP servers, and we got MCPVP already.
Shorter Version:
Join an anarchy server, where PvP and greifing is allowed, but not encouraged. Where people band up in towns, assigning guards and other stuff.
EDIT: These are long gone D: And them that are still here are not much different from PvP.
See that sounds awesome, a lot better than digging to bedrock just to built a modest house.
Yeh I agree but some people just like to build so there should be some of those server. Aswell I don't like the servers you need to go to their website to apply to join and build and then wait for a week to be accepted, especially the big servers where you are nothing to them
other than a money maker.
I'm not saying there shouldn't be protected servers at all, I'm all about people playing the game the way they want. I doubt I will ever sign up for a whitelisted server, since I've heard some of the "applications" can get pretty personal and demanding.
I like specific spawn towns that you can be a part of. But I always, ALWAYS prefer servers where, once you venture out into the wild , you are open to PVP, grief and anything else that isn't a mod or admin abusing their powers for fun. I enjoy that sense of '' it COULD happen and if it does.. tough luck!

Exactly. Always looking behind me, making traps for potential raiders, and making sure I'm in tip top shape in case I ever get in a pickle. From my experience things can get out of hand really fast when two groups of people come across each other in the wild, and I've fought many epic battles simply because someone makes a sudden move or gets too close.
I want to found an "Old Anarchy" server like i was talking about. No protection, and PvP is on, but not encouraged forming towns and villages. I miss it so much.
It doesn't seem like people have the same spirit in Minecraft as they did before. Now it's just about getting the highest enchantments and ruling the server, forcing people to tip toe anywhere outside the safety of their house.
Most of what you said makes sense but a lot of people like to play in 'teams' and kill the enemy factions. Well I'm against faction servers aswell because most of them are really bad organized.
I enjoyed being part of a team when I first played on a faction server, it was a neat change from the usual every man for himself. But most admins and owners don't step in when they should, like when people can't even play because they are getting followed and killed repeatedly. Raiding and fighting is part of factions, but you have to know when enough is enough.
I used to play on a hardcore factions server before it got shutdown :(.
You could open doors, use redstone, and use chests while in faction territory, and teleporting, etc costed money. The people were great but then it died suddenly...if it ever comes back on with the old ip it's bocklebee.provisionhost.com

Against the rules to advertise servers in other posts. I know it wasn't your intention, but I am just letting yeah know. /minimod
I think it would be great if there were like three-four small groups of people in a vanilla server who live a bit far away from each other. They each have a castle or fort or small base and occasionally they go to "war" over small things like trespassing or insults, but they keep it light. It doesn't go far enough as to, say, them burning down houses or killing excessively. Everyone just kinda minds their own things but the idea of war and defense is always present. Alliances would be formed, more groups of friends could join and make their own bases, but everyone would be fair and considerate, letting the new players have some time before declaring war against them. If towns want to live in peace, they should be able to.
The last thing I like is servers that start in a hellhole of war, where people with iron armor with a diamond sword kill you before you even see your first tree. They don't even gain anything! You have no XP nor any items!
Servers need all the protection they can get. When it comes to griefers and hackers, there's a surplus of them. When it comes to anti-grief plugins, there's not that many to choose from.
OP sounds like griefer trash to me. If you want a server where it's socially and morally acceptable to walk into someone's place and take a **** all over it, go find a pvp server.

So everyone who prefers PvP, survival, and free build is griefer trash? No, you're just ignorant. It's a game, I don't bring morals into games because they are just that: games.
I definitely agree with you - the only servers I can find that allow greifing are filled with x-rayers meaning it doesn't matter if you hide your base because they will find it.
The server I have been looking for is this server:
A server where there are no faction plugins, meaning you have to trust your teamates.
A server where there are no "donator perks" where some rich 8-year old can gear up in enchanted diamond crap and whack the **** out of new experienced players.
A server where griefing and raiding is allowed, meaning there is a challenge in base placement.
A server where there is a central trade area, with gold nuggets as currency - not virtual (virtual, in a sense) money - meaning your money can get stolen.
A server with no "portals" to different areas - you have to walk there yourself.
A server where there isn't a big confusing as **** spawn town - each player has a different spawn point.
A server with no "/home" plugins - remember your way or get screwed.
A server that actually has no lag - it seems all the servers just stamp "no lag" on their advertisement even if it's laggy as hell.
A server where players are mature and don't use x-rays to get stuff because they're too stupid to find it themselves.
That is my dream server. I don't know about anyone else, but that is my dream.
The psychology behind what you're talking about and why it's so scarce on SMP server is easy to understand if you have some gaming history and analytically skills.
Back in the Everquest days a game came out called Shadowbane. In Shadowbane it took weeks to months to build a town/city. You could also declare fealty to another town, and nations/empires formed until the whole server was just 2 empires. Each town/city could be taken down in one night by an enemy. So basically what happened was 1 empire would eventually win, destroying all the other towns or having the other towns declare fealty. With months of work down the drain, people would just quit. All that time invested was erased. What's the point of starting over? It will just get erased again.
That's why you generally find at least some minuscule piece of protection on most SMP servers.
