So I will truly admit, I am shocked at how people get away with selling off servers and skins.
Both incredibly simple to do and each have easy free automatic versions of them. And its not like the people running the servers NEED the money. I run a server about 18hrs a day -could be 24 if wanted- and my pc sucks ass lol. The server isnt laggy either and I've got alot of friends from PS3 that get on and off of it whenever we notice each other online on PSN. How do people get away with this?
Something like $10/month seems worth it to me to have a server up close to 24/7. Especially when it's able to host many more players with less lag than I could from my own computer.
Exactly. And in the end, the person who pays for the hosting ends up working on the server, fixing stuff, helping the community and has no time to play at all, while the freeloaders come and have their fun. That's why I don't find it too bad if a person who really likes the server donated a $ or two.
Currently running a tekkit server with an average of 16 to 27ish sometimes higher or lower on at all times, and it is mind numbingly simple. Do not give me that.
Because people with lots of money will pay for anything.
It happens. :/ people gotta smart up! xD I could be charging for a 24 7 no lag server but 1 I don't have the lack of guilt to do so and 2 I'm too nice to steal people's money xD so i will stick to what i am doing.
I can see many reasons. For one most pay to play servers are hosted externally. That means there is a charge associated to use the hardware. RENT! If I wanted to host a server this would most likely be my course of action. My PC is of a moderate-high end build and could probably host 15-20 people on a LAN, but due to my internet connection being a mere 5 MB/s average I could not host a large server from my computer. I would need some way to make up the cost.
Second, it helps keep griefing to a minimum. People aren't going to pay only to be kicked out. It can also make server admins feel obligated to provide a decent service and be fair as people are paying real money. So don't pull that lack of guilt bull, it works both ways. Not only that they also tend to be more responsible. I haven't heard anywhere near the number of abusive admin complaints about pay to play that I have free to play servers.
Third, an externally hosted server can run near 24/7 and can dedicate all their computing power to running Minecraft. I can't say that about my computer, especially not where I live where there are frequent power outages, not to mention power costs and every once in a while I kick a power cord or something just futzes. To top it off my computer also has to handle me looking at and rendering videos, surfing the internet, installing new programs, updating and installing new driver software and many other things which sap processing power.

It doesn't matter whether I support or object to the subject at hand, if your argument is stupid I am against you.

I'm sorry but the first reason is kinda... meh. I am only paying 58$ a month and my internet is reading at 108 mbps
Its all good though, trolls will attempt to troll. My point above was as long as your not hosting more than 100 people, and you are not running minecraft off your microwave, then its not hard and it is not insanely costly. The only hard part is getting mo creatures to work properly without any of its damnable bugs.

Are you saying I'm trolling? I'm confused.
I run a server for me and my friends all the time. No I would not charge them, but the fact that you brought pay to play into your argument, I felt it a safe assumption that you were talking about large servers.

and no, i don't accept donations. [to whoever thinks they can make me look like a dick server owner]

Many servers (especially larger ones) use a hosting company of sorts, and servers are VERY expensive to buy, maintain, and keep running.
Bandwidth is also not free and most home lines cannot handle the kind of bandwidth needed for more than 5 people or so.
Many game server programs are free, but running and maintaining the hardware costs money.

You have to realize, not everybody lives in an area where that kind of connection is available.
