The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
I don't play SMP and have no plans to do so, so if they're going to add a new ore I'd like it to be useful for more than taking up space. If there will be a way to trade with villagers, I'm ok with that. Otherwise let me make something with it.
The way I see things, trading is still a W.I.P, and I'm sure will end up changed anyways.
A more intricate trading system, and possibly a view of the Testificate's 'Inventory' would be nice.
However, I have to agree with oCrapaCreeper up there. 250 to 1000 is a huge gap for tool durability.
I'm not asking for Emerald tools specifically, but just something to help bridge the gap would be nice.
Steel, or something.
I think they are fine the way they are, but if they added Emerald tools they should be pretty weak. I don't think you should be able to give wheat to a villager and get the materials to craft something stronger than iron.

"Victory is like a watermelon. It's hard to spell and it tastes good."
I feel the Emeralds overall were a bit of a pointless addition, when we already have Gold, which really doesn't have enough uses. I feel Jeb sort of went against his own philosophy of not adding ores just for the sake of it. They've also made the Emeralds ridiculously rare and Biome exclusive, which makes them feel even more pointless. I'd rather they'd made Gold Nuggets the currency of the game.
Although, it is nice they've now filled in the niche for a Green Ore, and an Emerald Sword would look pretty darn sexy...
