PICTURE #1: Extreme hills biome. It is very common to find "epic" natural structures there. However they are all spammed together and they are only present in that biome. Therefore, that is the same as before.
PICTURE #2: Jungle biome. Jungles are a great addition, possibly the only biome nearly up to my standards. Height variation is present in jungles except I think the hills are spammed together, not sure though. Remember, jungles have decent height variation. Not to mention floating islands are still present in the game. Things are the same.
PICTURE #3: Same thing as picture 2. Except what you're showing us are biomes transitioning. It might give you the illusion that a certain biome (plains in that picture) has been edited to have height variation. Same as before.
PICTURE #4: Again, jungles are and have been pretty cool. Those beaches need some real work though. Same as before.
PICTURE #5: Extreme hills biome. You can find this anywhere. Dull colored grass, no trees, and "cool" looking natural structures and weird height variation spammed together. Same as before.
PICTURE #6: Jungles again.
BONUS PICTURES: Random spawner, common extreme hills formation, common extreme hills formation, common extreme hills formation.
Sadly, according to your pictures, things look the same as before.
@OneEyedMule: I'm sure if you search up anything concerning the previous generator, you'll find what Ace is talking about instantly. He's not "blowing smoke" and the problem with the terrain is a fact.
EDIT: OP, if you're going to show us pictures of the terrain differences between 1.8 and now, show us pictures of stuff other than the extreme hills biome and jungles.
Ugh. Complaints.
I have been playing for quite a while, and have a full save of 1.7.3 and some older stuff with a backdated .jar (somewhere ).
While the maps are amazing (then), it seems that so many people are just using this as a topic to gripe about. It does seem a little better- things are more cohesive, and we're getting new world options. While it's not the 'breathtaking' maps of pre-1.8, it's still pretty nice. Things are moving forward- let's stop being so bitchy whiny and be appreciative of what we have, which is still a pretty nice damn game that I'm more than happy to waste hours of my time on.
I'd love to see a return to old gen- but is that realistic? I don't know. I do know that a lot has been added to the game that didn't exist pre-1.8. I want less caves because they're so damn prevalent, but do I go bitching about it? No. This topic was started as a positive effort, not a "Hey I put this up come whine about it". Kudos to OP for effort (and positive thoughts).

Quit whining. More playing.
Great. People who are crazy enough to think that their bitching will do something might actually will do something. Our job as players is to give feedback to the company. Without that, no progress will be made. Now stop telling me to stop giving feedback. This is a forum, where people discuss things for god's sake...

I second this notion as everyone is entitled to their opinion whether others agree with it or not. What some consider "bitchy" or "whiny" could be considered a chance for great improvements by others. People who say "Just stop complaining and enjoy it" are the people who are afraid of change and are willing to settle for less then the best which is not what we want. For those of us who have been around since nearly classic - we've all noticed the drastic change in land formation and are willing to admit that it is beginning to turn into a global problem.
We are giving our opinions and, like thousands of others, we feel the surface terrain (and even underground terrain) of Minecraft could use some major improvements. As I stated before, those who are willing to settle for less then the best have no place on the forums anyway as the forums is a place to post your opinions and feedback in hopes to change the game for the better.
He failed to do so; therefore his post is pointless.
Of course it took them hours. I am fairly proficient in programming myself, and it can take me up to an hour to program a minor thing, depending on bugs. So, of course, it could have taken them a whole day to do it. The argument that I was squashing is that when they released a terrain change it would be major. This said minor.

THANK you. THANK you for acutally providing PRODUCTIVE feedback instead of just saying "lololo invalid argument b*tch". I don't mind at all that people have different opinions than me, I mind when they just say "no" without saying why. Your post, while negative, is productive and therefore appreciated by me.
As per your bold text: All, except for the first 3, of these pictures, were taken within the first 5 minutes of starting a new world, and mountains and jungles just happened to be the only biomes nearby. Later, I will explore more and try to find some other stuff. Remember, I am not in any way saying these are the same as 1.7. I am saying that terrain might be getting improved, although it does NOT come close to 1.7 in any way.
All else: Please try to provide productive feedback like this guy did.

Actually my argument was valid. Chaos and I are on the exact same page. Though he went into greater detail then I. I am sorry if you misunderstood me, I did not mean to come across as unclear. What I mean is if Mojang is going to do anything about the land formation - at least to the degree that Chaos, myself, and many others would like.. it wouldn't be something slightly changed over time. Especially not through minor changes such as 20 x 20 areas that you take snapshots of after venturing about for the first 5 minutes of your newly loaded map.
The thing is, images such as the ones you have posted are not all too uncommon. In fact, they are very common, and in no way signify that Mojang are making any changes and if they are, the pictures you have posted show that Mojang are not headed in the right direction with their terrain changes. I guess you could say it is all opinionated, and I apologize that you could not understand my original post or that you read it incorrectly this is something I could not control.
The fact remains, however, that if the terrain formation is changing, and your pictures are evidence of said change, then Mojang is not headed in the right direction. At least not for my standards.
All in all, the forums are a place for opinions on such matters and I did not mean to come across as having no evidence to back my theory. I simply meant my original post as my opinion, which your poll asks for if I am not mistaken? Forgive me for voting in your poll as I thought there was a "no" option up there for a reason.

I agree that the amount of difference between the current and old terrain is large, and that it would probably take a larger update to completely change it. However, using snapshots, they might be trying to take a different approach, trying to keep the "easier to manage" generation code while making it more interesting, and then in a large update just finish it off. What I'm saying is that it is possible to tweak things slowly and then get the large stuff in one blow.

I was merely trying to have a slightly uplifting opinion about things, as I had noticed that contrary to the "terrain is boring" thread, I have actually found at least some, if maybe not as many as 1.7, semi-not boring places. I wasn't aware that uplifting opinions were not appreciated on the forums.

Ok. That is a well-put opinion, and I will respect that.

The forums are places for opinions, you are correct. And your first post was completely fine. And I'm fine with people voting "no" in my poll, as long as it's justified, which your first post was. Your first post was completely on-topic, and an appreciated opinion. It was after that, when you started arguing with everybody who had a different opinion then yours, that I started having a lower opinion of you.

Thank you for taking your time to listen.
Then I understand where you are coming from and I can respect that you are having a positive outlook on the way Minecraft is changing. I guess I'm quite the pessimist, eh? And I am not meaning to argue with everyone who disagrees with me, this is just something that I am passionate about and would really like to see re-implemented into the game. Seems we don't have such different opinions after all. We want the same thing it's just you think it's happening and I am skeptic about it. So we are on the same side no need to fight
I don't know, maybe I'm just really lucky or something. I have a tendency to run into naturally awesome seeds constantly. Perhaps it's just because my concept of awesome terrain includes both above and under the world's surface.
I agree that the aboveworld terrain has a tendency to be flatter post-1.7, but underground I've been finding amazing cave systems more often. I also think that the Extreme Hills does capture some small portion of the pre-1.7 charm.
Personally, if I had known that 1.8 was going to decimate previous seeds, I would have kept a copy of 1.7 so I could play both versions.

Yeah... I guess we're wasting time fighting... I was probably a bit aggressive there. I'm just a bit more on the optimistic side, I guess. Have a 5-star rating for standing out from most of the community and not continuing an argument. What we should be doing is asking jeb if he's been noticing the complaints about terrain.

I personally find the underground terrain these days a combination of awesome and annoying. Awesome because they are huge and epic, you can find huge caverns and such...
And annoying because they are so frequent that they're not awesome anymore. Honestly, in 1.8 at least I could have a decent level 12 strip mine. These days I run into a cave almost as soon as I start.
Oh, and there's a program, MCNostalgia I think it's called, that lets you downgrade.

The terrain generation is capable of interesting things, but I do miss the old beaches with the ocasional clay deposit in them, as well as mountains covered in trees (so far it seems only the jungle biome does that now)... Sprinkle in some of the old terrain generator in with the one we have now and things will be awesome!
