Professional companies run multiple servers in multiple locations so that "one" server, router etc etc etc going down does not bring down everything.
So, when SW:ToR's sever's were down back then, and not for maintenance mind you, I was just imaginening things? I mean, that never really happened huh? It was just a dream right?
Don't give me that bullcrap, If one server goes down then usually a bunch of them get issues, that's just how things go when you're working with things that require to be up and running 24/7, it will eventually crash like anything else. Or were all those other server downtimes with other MMO's just a figment of my imagination then?
Notch should buy a server that work a bit better. fallback options, switchable service, etc.
Mojang makes more money per second than most people in a month. No doubt he could at least afford a server with a better uptime rating.
I'm sure they have that, but there's a lot of information to store. You can't have a server up 24/7. Nothing is perfect.
Its probably just gonna be my like 1.2.7 or something, preparing for the 1.3 update in june or july. but who knows, maybe its a birthday surprise from jeb!
Multiplayer is part of the game I purchased.. I pay real money every month for a server for some of us to play on... Which, none of us can get to because Mojang is still stuck in the "we're a little indie company" mentality as opposed to realizing they left that realm when they made their first million.. How many other companies and people run servers that no one can play on right now? How many of those servers make revenue that pays other peoples salaries, puts food on their table etc. Seriously.. I used to work for one of the biggest game companies out there and this type of stuff was not tolerated.. It's part of running a professional business where you actually take serious pride in your business and the responsiblities that entails. Mojang has the money to ensure that these types of things don't happen as often as they do.. As long as people like you and others continue to cut them slack because you view them as an little indie company being run out a basement, this will continue. Demand excellence since they have the resources now to deliver on it.
It is obvious that mojang has lifted its head above the the rest of the smaller game companies buy expanding to a new platform. While some of you say they are out blowing their money frivolously and others says the money goes back into the game I believe that it perhaps is more likely that the client base has expanded a lot faster than anticipated causing issues to arise that where unforeseen. Yes a tech around the clock is the best route to go but keep in mind that with all the projects and fixes and weeding through code to change a + to a -, that it may have just not occurred to them that the login server would go down as soon as someone wasn't there to give it a good kick in the ass. They are doing a lot behind the scenes and bitching will not make it better any faster. They are a hand full of people trying to keep millions happy. Its like being a mom with a million preteen kids. Keep in mind that while their company has just gone mainstream it doesn't mean that they they have hired qualified individuals to support them. Perhaps they haven't had the time or availability to interview while patching up the 360 version or what ever the case may be.
I just started Minecraft and was going to play singleplayer offline (I don't play multiplayer anyway so I don't miss it) but when I loaded my world that I've been using for about a year it wasn't there, it's been replaced by a brand new world (same file name). Will I get my old world back when the server comes back up?
With the tremendous amounts of money Mojang is earning, why don't they have any redundant systems and tech specialists available during their off-hours?

How many times have there been issues with the mojang authentication servers over the last few months compared to your other examples?
If one server going down brings down everything, then you have a serious infrastructure issue which needs to be redesigned... This type of situation can be prevented.. You should be asking the question why haven't they done it instead of just accepting it. But then again it appears you're willing to accept mediocrity from companies you've paid money to for something that's supposed to be accessible 24/7 and will make excuses for them as you're a just a fanboy... Carry on...

While true that they've grown very quickly in a short period of time, I don't believe that's really the issue.. I've worked for companies that have gone through that.. In my opinion, the real problem is that they are trying to do too many things and not keeping their eye on their main product (something a lot of fast growing companies end up doing which leads to their downfall).. They've got 3 other games they're working on.. Plus xbox now although that was ported/developed by a different company... Plus the mobile version.. They've got so many different things going on that they're spread way to thin and from what I'm seeing from the outside, they don't have a solid management team in place to keep it all in line.. I've worked for a number of companies and closely with several others where all these types of things occured and I see the same thing happening with them.

Sorry, I'm not being a fanboy. In fact I got the game for free due to a friend giving me a gift code for it \o/. Nonetheless, I am simply being logical and quite frankly, today has been the only day that I've encounter a login issue and I have been playing it daily lately so I can't really see what "other issues" you are talking about.
Secondly, it is a well known fact that the about more then the half of the playerbase of any online playable multiplayer game, are a bunch of impatient whining buggers that act like it is the end of the world when the servers go down and blame it all on everything they can think of. Again, you do not know what they are doing behind the scenes so you cannot possible say what kind of servers they have, how they do their maintenance or how they work on resolving issues like these.
It is common law for any online multiplayer game that there will be server downtime and that it will take up several hours, yet people act like it is the end of the world rather then just sitting back and doing something else for a while rather then bitching and whining on the forums about how they know things better then the people who are actually paid for it.
Oh god. Ima already starting to get withdraw symptoms. Don't you just hate it when you cant go play another game whilst waiting for the one you want to play, to work

Well, you seem determined to have your own whine about the whiners, but isn't the real issue here communication?
There is no announcement. There is no prediction of when the server will be up. Even a simple acknowledgement would be good.
I have to agree though, that if Mojang have built a single point of failure into the system they should give it a bit more attention.

Whining attracts whiners That's common law as well.
Though I do have to agree with you on the lack of communication, as only apparently two members of the Mojang team have publicly posted on the issue and they aren't exactly the people everyone follows (Not like Jeb or Notch). One would suspect that their main twitter account is available to their staff, but that does not seem to be the case else there would have been a notice on it.

Why even Twitter? It's a bit random. Why not a big banner on minecraft.net saying the login server's down and they're working on it?
Mgabrys, you clearly don't understand the logistics behind hosting millions of players simultaneously. I can tell by your irrelevant mention of the 360 version. I hardly think you're entitled to criticize so harshly. Yeah, you paid your dues, just like the rest of us have. Please, link me to a disclaimer promising full 24/7 multiplayer server support. I don't remember ever seeing one. But, I'm sure that even if there were, and some disgruntled customer filed a lawsuit against them, they'd just settle it out of court by paying them off with all the money they aren't investing in other projects.
All you've done here is make yourself look like an ass. None of your posts contain any relevant substance. Your slanderous remarks, and your disturbingly vivid imagery hold no weight here.

Well to be frank, I don't think many people really go to the site anymore once they got minecraft, unless they want to update their skin. The largest information sources on anything official on Minecraft goes via this forum site and via twitter, so I reckon that most people would sooner check here or on twitter to see what is going on, rather then going to the main site.

The fact that their own tweets indicate even they don't know what's going on or who can fix it says a lot don't you think?
I work for companies that run large online sites.. I doing coding for those sites and their servers.. I'm well aware of what sort of infrastructure is required and available for this sort of thing.
Given I pay monthly for a server I can't use right now and that this is an ongoing issue with mojang when it shouldn't be, I feel perfectly justified in being pissed off about the situation.
I've been hosting sites on the net for years now and those companies have a 99.99%+ uptime policy.. The main company I'm with has been down for maybe an hour or two in the 5 years I've been with them if that. That's the type of performance I expect from a professional company.
If mojang can't provide 24/7 service on their authentication servers then they shouldn't even have them so that we can use the game as purchased.. i.e. multiplayer.
But then again, I guess I shouldn't expect excellence from a game company that has made millions.
But, I'm sure that even if there were, and some disgruntled customer filed a lawsuit against them, they'd just settle it out of court by paying them off with all the money they aren't investing in other projects.
No no no, Notch will challenge them to a Quake 3 tournament first, that seems to be the Mojang way.

Cheesie, Mojang aren't hosting millions of players. They're merely authenticating them. Hardly the same thing.
