Everyone knows that 1.8 Beta is when minecraft tore apart. There was so much division among the fanbase that ripples of its war still persist unto this day. The thing is, I was on the 1.8 side. I would roam these forums for quite some time, and I almost instinctively hunted down people that said that 1.8 had ruined minecraft because it angered me. People still do it, and for the most part, they're still wrong.
I liked the adventure update, I liked the hunger bar, I liked enchantments, added content, new dungeons, and even The End. I liked all the little things that everyone hated: swamps, snow golems, cookies, brewing and leveling. I was on mojang's side with all of it because I really think, and I still do, that it brought the game forward, and made it more interesting.
However, I did something today I don't normally do. I was in a nostalgic mood, so I wanted to find a map that I knew would be worth playing on. I instantly thought of Criswel, and his top-notch maps, and how he put so much effort into them that he blew everyone else's attempts out of the water. The world he made was so comforting, and personal, it wasn't just to show off, it was something he really enjoyed, and enjoyed experiencing. I found his boat tour, where the challenge is to circumvent his main continent, Minoa, and he personally said it was his best experience in minecraft. So, of course, I couldn't pass it up.
I took that boat tour, and it was a small odyssey for me. I didn't just want to travel the world and get it over with, I made it a goal to explore the areas where he had made small bases in. I almost cried, and I almost am now. It was like exploring my earliest stages of minecraft. The buildings weren't pretty, they were functional. I expected what I had seen in Criswelvania, but I instead ran across something more honest and pure, Criswel's actual world he played in. I was amazed, and in awe of the world generation, I had forgotten just how common, and huge that the mountains were, and how aesthetically pleasing the placement of all the trees were among the landscape which was alien and yet still inviting.
I found beaches. Not small ones, but beaches that were obviously beaches. I found a cove with sand surrounded by hills, hidden from view of the sea, but a beautiful spot to stand in. It almost made me want to build a house there, but I made it a goal to travel the world, so I got back on my boat, and traveled on. I found bases, half finished, and spawners, abandoned, scattered throughout the land. I looted his houses, and rifled through what was obviously obtained through much work and time... and fun.
I kept going until I finally got lost. I forgot to make a map, and I should have. I couldn't find my way back now, so I just kept going, and there was no more civilization in sight, but my, was it fun.
Then I saw something off in the distance that made me sad. A lone tree, a weeping willow, a swamp tree. this was the end of the map, the end of the rendered world, this was as far as Criswel explored. As my boat fell one block level into the newer ocean, I saw the flat, boring, and desolate world that minecraft is now. I looked back at the wall, a plateu which nearly touched the clouds, and wider than I remembered they could ever get. I realized that all these people weren't just upset for no reason. I was upset.
For months, I've hardly played minecraft at all because I can't find a place I want to build. It all just seems so boring now. It's flat, and lifeless, and it's sucking all the creativity out of me.
I love enchanting, I love the new biomes, I love all of the new features, and there isn't one I would ever want removed from the game. I miss the old world though. The new world isn't the same, it doesn't even compare. I'm sorry to all those people I insulted back when the adventure update went live. I'm sorry because I know why you were upset.
I'm upset too because they'll never bring it back.
It took me some time to realize something wasn't right. I mean, when I started playing the release (Minecraft 1.0) I was excited as a crackhead finding crack. It's the terrain man. We all know it, but people obviously don't want to man up to it. Sure, the previous generators had somewhat little "building space" even though you could get a shovel and a pickaxe and terraform for 2 minutes (plus you got some resources to work with after that!!!!), but it doesn't mean it can't improve now. People think whenever I say "I want height variation to return" are thinking I'm saying "I want nothing but hills and mountains spammed in my desperate face." This is completely WRONG. I want big flat areas, but so much nice stuff was taken out when 1.8 arrived, it's like it's vital to the game's fun factor.
It's the terrain and nothing else. But don't get me wrong. SO MANY THINGS ARE INCOMPLETE IN MINECRAFT. But I think the terrain should be focused on the most honestly.
I, too, miss the original generation. I pretty much have the same story as you, minus all the Criswel exploring etc.
All the new updates are fantastic, but the world generation is terrible. Again, though, a community can make a difference. Get people on board, start a group and get Mojang's attention. It's not far beyond our reach.
The community is the most powerful tool a game can have.
I really feel the need to correct you here. Flatness is NOT realism. It is the opposite! If you compare minecraft to real life, mount everest is a little over 300 times higher than the height limit in minecraft.
Now I'm not saying minecraft needs to be 5000 meters high (that would be kick ass though) I saw a person who modded the game to make a mountain range up to the new world height, with snow caps and everything. It was utterly mind blowing! Chaos's thread is just asking for height up to HALF of the height limit. The more up and down, properly implemented variation we get in minecraft, the more appealing it will lim to us. That's just human nature, and a fact.
Chaos, you should use part of this in the quotes section, or maybe just link this to the thread!
*the OP's post, not mine. Lol. Not that you can't use my quote .
Will do. I'm planning to do a revamp of the thread with some of the new pictures the players have provided soon. However I don't want total focus on my thread. We'll get nowhere by doing that.
We did not invent the Algorithm. The Algorithm consistently finds Jesus. The Algorithm killed Jeeves. The Algorithm is banned in China. The Algorithm is from Jersey. The Algorithm constantly finds Jesus. This is not the Algorithm. This is Close.

Heh, thank you, both of you. I suppose it took a lot for me to break my 413'th post. Ohwell, I made it a good one. Goodbye best title ever.
Anyways, I think you would benefit well from having a directory leading to multiple testimonies. Be sure to handpick ones that aren't just angsty. Those will probably turn people off.
I feel exactly the same. I don't even play singleplayer anymore, the terrain just doesn't inspire me to build, or even explore. Every biome looks exactly the same. The world seems so flat with only minor hills until you hit the "Extreme Hills" biome, but with it's dull coloured grass and little to no trees it's hardly appealing. Then you've got the beaches, it's like they've just changed the side of the land with sand blocks, sometimes the beach ends before it even reaches the water.
Recently I downgraded to Beta 1.7.3, and I can honestly say my love for MC returned. I've been having so much fun exploring the world. It inspires me to explore, mine and build.
It's obvious I'm not the only one. It's definitely the terrain, and I honestly feel it needs a complete overhaul. The "Adventure update" felt more like a downgrade in terms of terrain.
Well don't I just feel like a ****ing outcast for barely even remembering the previous terrain generation . . . . *sigh*
I have fond memories of my first worlds in Minecraft, even though my memories bad.
I remember my first creeper encounter.
I remember my first mining expedition.
I remember my first Nether visit.
I remember making a cabin in a snowy plains made just out of dark wood logs.
The old terrain was pretty, sure, but I never got emotionally attached to it. I can agree that the current terrain generation feels rather 'flat' since mountains don't really spawn anymore, although to be fair mountains were a big inconvenience to me since I only build on flat areas, and mountains just existed to block my line of sight, to be honest.
I will say that for pure visuals, the old terrain generation was very good, but for practicality I prefer the new one. And the Large Biomes world type option is just so amazing <3 F yeah, beaches looking better than they ever have!
Maybe it's because my memory is very bad and selective so I only remember specifically what I build and important things I did . . . I just don't really feel incredible nostalgia for how the terrain was in 1.7.3 and back . . . not to say it was bad, I just don't think it's anything worth crying over.
I really do feel that a lot of people should just use McNostalgia and just be happy playing on the old updates.
I had quite a bit of fun with the old terrain when I started playing the game, but I like having the large stable biomes the way we do now. I know that there aren't as many really cool looking land features, but I love being in a biome that goes for thousands of blocks in any direction regardless of what that biome is. I haven't had too many times where I thought to myself "I miss the old world generation" because I like to split my time evenly between the caves and the surface, the old caves were terrible, small and extremely dull after a while. The new caves, however, can keep you occupied for days and sometimes weeks with trying to get everything out of them, and I enjoy that quite a bit. I remember the 404 cave, as I am sure many people do, being the biggest cave ever, ever, and then when they put out the update some of the cave systems went for thousands and thousands of blocks making the 404 cave seem small. I did love the old terrain from above ground, but one thing I absolutely hated about it, was the fact that nine times out of 10 if you dug a tunnel up to the surface you would end up underwater, half the time never finding your way back to the hole you came out of. While I do agree that something needs to be done to liven up the terrain just a little bit, I wouldn't want any major modifications to most of the biomes beyond making the villages more common and fitting to their environment (sandstone huts in deserts, mud huts in swamps, etc.) in a way that seems appropriate. Mabey even random desert crypt-like things, or something like aztec ruins in jungles.
I know that you guys miss the old generation, but I don't. I would however like to see an old generation world type when you make a world, for either the sake of nostalgia or because you liked it better, because you all deserve to play the game the way you like it without having to go through the hassle of loading old .jar files.
While I've enjoyed most aspects of the recent updates, I too was somewhat bothered by the new generator.
Although I initially found it more impressive than it's predecessor, it's lack of variety became more apparent as time went on.
And as stupid as it seems, I'm also annoyed by the all-too-common mountain biome's dull grass colour.
As many have mentioned before me, the height restrictions imposed on the individual biomes is a big reason for the lack of variety. If it was up to me, I would have biomes formed independently of the height maps, and make the mountain biome much rarer. Allowing the mountains to break the 128-block generator limit would also help them stand out, and make for some nice scenery.
I believe making these changes would leave the world generator the best it's ever been.
i dunno, this new terrain is nice. if u dont like it, do maps, or new texture packs, for the "old boring large hills" new mc terrain can be exciting if u make it exciting.

Are youbored of minecraft? It's not the new features. I'll give you a hint:It's the terrain generation. Go play a map generated in 1.7.3 or earlier, then tell me you don't agree.
Solutions:
Downgrade
Don't Play
Multiplayer
Play on Hardcore
Play on Hard
Take a Break!
Mods.
Texture Packs.
Challenges.
Adventure Maps.
The List goes on and on...
I'm waiting till 1.4 to mod, I don't want to use the crappy forge client, and most mods that don't use mod loaders aren't that great. I already use texture packs, and I've found that most challenge maps, outside of a select few, are badly made and aren't fun.
Also, don't make comments like "oh you should just downgrade;" that's a good way to sound like an enormous douche.
I fully agree with this, but there is one thing that makes this topic almost worthless.
nods.
there's so many terrain improving mods out there! new biomes, old world terrain, old world terrain mixed with new terrain, so many good options to make minecraft amazing again.
the reason that mods don't COMPLETELY destroy this topic is because there SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE MODS to fix this.so, install generator ports, make a new world, and have fun.

Don't like the new stuff or terrain? Downgrade, download a mod, etc etc. There are many things out there to solve your issues of Nostalgia and boredom.

It's funny how people think OP is against the new biome size option or that he wants the old generator to return. You realize how stupid it is to say you want the old generator to return?

I'm sure OP doesn't care about biome size or the new option. Cave sizes in the old generator were random. Sure, you were bound to find smaller ones than bigger ones most of the time, but I've been in caves in 1.7 that lasted me hours to explore. Too bad in the current generator, you can't make a mine without running into a swiss-cheese cave complex every four blocks. Every cave intersects another cave and it will turn into one complex that intersects with 50 other complexes. It's pretty annoying when you can't have the feeling you "conquered" the cave when it lasts forever. I'm not against these swiss-cheese complexes, but I'm against their frequency of appearing in your world. WAY too often.
For months, I've hardly played minecraft at all because I can't find a place I want to build.
Thanks for writing all of this. I've been neglecting Minecraft too, even though I run a server. I'll often start a new single player world thinking it'll help get me back into it, but I abandon it within minutes because it just feels bland.
On my server, the coolest builds are underground, in the sky, in the mountains, or along the coast. We've all built around the giant plain biome that the spawn is in, but no one is interested in building on flat, boring plains.
I loved the 1.8 update (and just about everything since then), but I do miss how unique the terrain used to be.
