For years I have watched as Microsoft has done everything in their power to control the market weather it be "Operating systems (Windows), game design (directx), office software (MS Office) and now the console market with the xbox.
Heck Microsoft is currently envolved in a lawsuit against Google over Android, and has a rep for going after anyone infringing on their (ip rights) weather true or otherwise. And the funny thing is that Apple is on Microsoft's side in the lawsuit.
See a few years back when Halo developer Bungie was a Microsoft studio.
Microsoft wanted Bungie to do things the Microsoft way, Bungie told Microsoft where to go and went on to other things. Bungie wasn't going to cave in to MS demands and ended their partnership, personally "way to go Bungie!"
Microsoft has a known rep for pushing their corporate weight around against small studios like Mojang when they (MS) gets them into a contract. (This is a proven fact look at how many times they (MS) has sued people over the smallest of things to get control.
Which makes me wonder just exactly how much of the new updates (snapshots) are Mojang and not MS pushing their weight around.
Don't take me wrong I use MS products everyday (windows 7 and Office 2010) mostly, but I'm really leery of MS having any say so in minecraft development being their past history. Unless it's for the xbox 360 (which I don't own).
Which also brings to mind another question.
How much of the current development of the unified SP/SMP is Mojang's doing and not MS for their console?
Or is it just Mojang wanting to get a major cash infusion from MS for the port to xbox?
Truly a unified SP/SMP client is the way to go but I'm concerned that it will take away from people like me that want to be able to control the mods our private servers run.
Um, Microsoft may have its fingers in the Xbox version, but the Minecraft I know and love is made without outside meddling. Normally I'm all for raising awareness for stuff mucking up otherwise good games, but I think you're being paranoid.

Agreed. Mojang is giving Microsoft exclusive rights to develop a console version of the game, but that's all. Microsoft has no say in what goes on in the PC version and Mojang is not responsible for the development of the Xbox version.
Yeah I agree with Rpsfunkey. Microsoft isn't that bad of a corporation. Sure they can be dicks on some issues, but without them where would modern technology & gaming for that matter be? They're not trying to take over Minecraft. The xbox version is just an arcade game/port. It's not going to have any affects on the pc version of minecraft. Also Bungie and Microsoft seperated on good terms, your completely twisting the story. The reason for this is Microsoft still wanted to make Halo games, while a lot of people at Bungie wanted to move past that and develop new games. So the people who still wanted to work on Halo transferred to 343 industries(a sub division of microsoft) and the others moved on. Microsoft owned Bungie at that point and they had complete control of the company, they however did the right thing and let Bungie buy out and become independent again and the only thing Bungie lost was it's right to the Halo franchise.
Sorry must be a grammar nazi. It's WHETHER not weather, though major props for both spelling and using "leery" correctly.
Ok grammar nazi done, (yes I know only one complaint) if not Microsoft someone else would have. There will always be some super powered evil company pushing everyone else around until it blows up in their face.

Ok, let the flames begin!

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
The ssp-smp merge is completely Mojang. Microsoft probably doesn't care about Minecraft aside from it being a good source of money.
Microsoft wouldn't be able to influence Mojang working on the PC version at all, they would only have rights over the Xbox version.
TL;DR: Tin-foil hat thread ^^
