It's very obviously a beard. I don't know what this 'proportion' junk is about (for a square face like that, you can't place it much better) .. it's the exact same color as his hair - who has lips that brown unless they're black? And seeing it as a smile makes his face look absolutely ridculous. I have a hard time seeing how this is a debate at all.
Ok, if it was a beard, it would extend all the way to the edge of [HEAD, FRONT] and past the sides of it into the sides of the head. In EVERY OTHER MINECRAFT HUMAN SKIN MADE, the mouth is that. If it was a goatee, it wouldn't look like that, period. And if that's a beard, what's the rest of the dark areas of the face?
I say it's a beard. When I modded the existing model to make my character, I kept the original "smile"...and that made my character look like it had facial hair of some kind, even though I didn't want him to have any. Once I lightened the area in question, it looked (relatively) clean-shaven. Which is the way I wanted it.

Um. Shaved? If you want to talk about every other minecraft skin, look at the old human without the beard. No humanoid minecraft skin has the mouth at the bottom of the face. The "smile" looks out of place compared to every other skin in the game.
The “it's a smile” camp are obviously wrong, but you'll not convince them as they aren't prepared to re-evaluate their opinions.
For everyone else who has a basic understanding of facial features, it's obviously a goatee beard.
The only way to sway the smilers is to get the original designer of the face bitmap to explain what their intention was. But you know what? Some people around here are so stubborn that even if it is confirmed one way or the other, they'd still insist on the contrary.
Its a beard... The mouth is above it, partly covered by a mustache.
And actually, this is the first time I see it as a smile, like you said... I am disgusted o_0

Without further ratification, case closed....
Different people see it different ways, and unless it is truly confirmed by the creator of the texture, then people should be able to think what they want about it. I don't see much arguments on either side aside from "You are completely wrong. If you know anything about faces it's obviously a beard/smile". Not everything in Minecraft has to follow a specific standard set by other objects, mobs, or items, and if it doesn't follow a pattern then a player can form an opinion of it based on their aesthetic/logical skills.

I can't picture it as a beard. Plus, beards go all the way to the cheekbones. That would mean that the beard would have to go to the edge of his face. Therefore, I think that it is a smile.

Beards don't have to go all the way to anywhere. A goatee beard is generally a small beard just around the area of the chin.
I have a beard, so I should know what a beard can and can’t do. I fettle it every day.
Yes, this is all a matter of opinion, but everyone who thinks it's a smile hasn't put together a very convincing argument for why that should be the case. To wit:
- Wiggycat314’s limited knowledge of beard extent
- Some guff about proper facial proportions (on a cube shaped head no less!)
- Not being able to explain the pink mouth and saying that it is 'just strange' (right, that’s ok then, let’s just pretend it doesn’t exist)
- Claiming the pink mouth is just the same colour as the rest of his face so can be dismissed.
- Claiming the pink thing (mouth) is not actually pink, but brown, and so must be something else (get your eyes checked)
- Claiming that if it was a smile it would look more natural (even though it is the colour of Steve's hair and would be so manic as to make him look like a nutcase)
- Claiming that a beard can’t just go up to the sides of your mouth and should cover your entire lower face and mouth from ear to ear (have you even seen facial hair?)
- That if it was a beard it would have poor proportions (have you ever seen a goatee?)
- That ‘stubble’ on the rest of the face proves it can’t be a beard (how exactly does that work? Why can’t you have a localised beard and stubble elsewhere? You can shape a beard, but you have to then shave the stubble to keep it in shape. But then again, you probably aren’t old enough to grow facial hair so wouldn’t know…ah, apparently, according to your profile Mobyguy77, you are 98 years old, so perhaps senility has set in. I’ll let you off)
Whereas the pro-beard people just explain what the features are that you can see on the face and don’t have to resort to bizarre justifications.
So you can put perception down to the aesthetic sensibilities of each person, but until I hear even just one coherent argument for a smile, IT’S A FRACKING BEARD!
I used to think it was a smile, but when people starting saying "no, it's a beard", I sort of started seeing it... I still mostly see a smile when I look at it but I really hope it's actually a beard because otherwise that's one hell of a dopey smile!
This is probably the reason why Notch changed to default skin. There would be too much debate on what the U-object is.
Which makes it a more easy to tell than this:
I'm fairly certain the beard is intended to look more like this:
But obviously, it's not going to look the best when you use squares.
Also, the beard is around the same color as his hair. Why would he have brown lips? It would look more pinkish if it was a smile, unless Steve is black.
The only issue is that the moustache part of the goatee is where the nose ought to be, so I'd just assume that that the goatee surrounds the chin only and the moustache area (lighter brown) over the top lip is acually the nose.
The whole thing is labouring under the low resolution of the skin's bit map and something has to give somewhere. It's not bad really though all things considered.

It's one thing to say "I think it looks like a smile and I prefer thinking of it as a smile", it's another to actually claim it was intended to be a smile. That was obviously not the intention, there's not really any question about it. This debate makes no sense.

I wasn't implying that it was intended to be a smile, just that people (on both sides of the debate) shouldn't try to say that somebody's opinion is "wrong" because it doesn't match up with the facts. I, as an example, think that ocelots and wolves were a great addition to Minecraft. Somebody can respond with a list of reasons why they are awful, and it might persuade me to see their point of view, but that still doesn't mean my opinion is wrong.

But this isn't a matter of opinion, this is fact/fiction. If you told me that in your opinion all the wolves in the game have purple polka dots, your opinion would be wrong. They don't have purple polka dots. It's the same with the beard. Thinking it looks like a smile is fine, but claiming the intention was for a smile is wrong. All the evidence points to it being a beard.

I wonder if your age has something to do with what you see...
Enter that and you'll score one hundred thousand rupees for us both, along with a spiffy card!

Beards can be SHAVED - like the skin's beard obviously is.
uh...... uhhh........... uhhh.................... yeah i really can't see as beard
