I can't find a link to it. But I know for a FACT I read it off of Dinnerbone's twitter. He says singleplayer will be a local server. (Basically, SMP that only you can play on. )
I'll take your word for it, but you just said it yourself that it's SMP that only you can play (on unless you want to invite others to join). Which essentially is single-player, so I don't see what's the problem as long as it's just you playing in the world. In fact, I find this pretty awesome, since this allows for quick world switching instead of replacing world files manually in the Minecraft_Server.exe files.
What Jeb said with the Curse interview was that, basically, you can load up your single player world, and invite your friends, not them just joining and griefing your ****, to play alongside you. Of course, you don't have to.

The problem (for me at least) is that if you have a crappy computer that can barely run minecraft then running a server alongside it would murder/crash my computer.

Perfectly understandable, and I'm worried about that kind of implementation as well (my laptop overheated enough to toast my morning breakfast when I attempted to run a server with others...yes I have a crappy computer, don't remind me by posting that you have 4000+ FPS). At this point we'll have to wait and see how Jeb and the Bukkit team will manage this. I assume they would probably make the server_jar file automatically start as soon as a friend accepts the invite and the world merges from Single-player to multiplayer, but having the server_jar not run during single-player to reduce lag- I don't know, I have absolutely zero experience with coding and how that will work, so we'll have to wait and see.
Jeb is planning on merging the code for singleplayer and multiplayer. This means that we won't need separate versions of mods for SSP and SMP. He's also planning on adding drop-in functionality so you can easily invite friends into your SSP worlds, if you so desire.
Needless to say, SMP bugs better be fixed for the merge.
Drop-in MM on my SSP worlds? Sure, why the hell not. Not like it affects me in any way, still gonna roll solo in my worlds and log in to a SMP server when I want to play with others.
Just people getting riled up over stupid stuff again. (Remember 1.8?)

I never noticed that thread.
They mentioned though Singleplayer will be run by a "local server". If that happens, I won't be able to play to game, because my laptop would burn my house down because it will overheat to the point where it burns people that touch it.
Slightly off-topic, but to those who fear laptop death, invest in a cooling pad. Not just something to rest the laptop on, but one with real fans that you plug into the USB port. I can play Minecraft hours on end when I use the cooling pad with no problems as compared to the half-hour I get otherwise.

Not if it's done right. When you're playing solo there shouldn't be any cause for an extra workload.
I can see why Jens would want to change to a unified code and would appreciate it if it makes the game easier for them to update and modify.
My gripe is that this wasn't done while still in beta or alpha. I've already paid for the game in the state that it was when it was released several months ago (I've had a copy since alpha, but was happy to buy 2 more just before it came out of beta). Why would they go and change it up so much now? Go and make another game or something. Don't mess with what I paid for.

If enough people ***** jeb will probably rethink it.
Unlikely in all honesty. Not only what I said about the above is true... but it would also merge the multiplayer and single player spawn points into one, so map makers could feel at ease.
it would also mean that Jeb would have to code in a fancy if else statement for the client to switch off showing the seed when in multiplayer mode.
Wait, who said they are removing single player?
They will add an option to let others connect to your SSP world, but you can still play alone like your usual SSP game, so what's the big problem?

EDIT: Ninja'd like ****.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

(That isn't the only reason, nor Jeb's reason. Jeb's reason is actually because he doesn't want the same bugs twice to fix.)

A lot of optimizations would also come from this.

Multiplayer will remain the same
Jeb is adding a coop option, a friend invites you into their world and you join him. Thats it. Its not a mistery or a difficult concept to comprehend.
God you people make a big fuss out of everything.
Or maybe it's just me. But if it's so, then the merge will be ridiculous.
Keep on derpin'
Just Like Terraria
(Only we will have a friends list :V)
I'm sure Jeb will also still ship a dedicated server jar or something (Like Terraria too.)
