Considering the fact that they are big, make scary noises, look scary and are rare in the nether. They are very weak.
First of all, there fireballs fly above you so you'll probably never get hit. And if you hit one back at them, they are dead instantly. 2-3 arrows can kill them now. There fireballs are so weak, they can't even destroy stone. And the fireballs move to slowly. And the ghasts don't fire them frequently enough.
I believe ghasts are [mechanically] just fine. All they really need is a slight increase on the explosion damage of the fireball. Maybe an additional heart, or half.
But as it is; I find its more effective to kill them with reflected bombs then shooting at them. It makes for a very interesting mob, and a fun fight. However the penalty for missing terribly is inconsequential; the netherrack under you being set on fire is more dangerous.
I think they are. It's the nether. It should be like hell. Where mobs are hard and there is a certain chest filled with awesome rare stuff somewhere in a temple. And the only way to get there it to avoid Ghasts and other nether mobs. That will make Minecraft better. It's boring to me.

Are Ghasts really "rare" in the Nether? When I'm in the Nether no matter where I go, there's always one of them just around the corner.
Why are Ghasts in the game? What is their "job" ? They are supposed to make it more difficult to obtain the resources you can only get from the Nether. Do they do that? Yes, definitely! If you think fighting Ghasts is too easy than you're probably "overdressed" for the Nether or you do not understand how this element of the game is supposed to work.

See I was told it would be more of a business-casual affair; but I didn't want to run the risk of being the only one under dressed.
But now that you've pointed it out I still feel like the odd man out.
I wear no armor and the Nether is way to easy. If you keep walking, a ghast will 95% of the time never hit you. They need better aiming, IMO. Also, I play on Hard and there are rarely any ghasts. In my years of playing, I've died a max of 10-15 times to ghasts.

Agree they are slightly to weak?

I really did not like the fact that they could steal any block.
If that was fixed I think they'd be perfect.
