I want to share a technique for building hidden underground cities and bases that i developed.
I started a new world a few days ago an it was flat and boring(as many 1.1 worlds are)
the first thing i did after wandering a while was to find a half-buried lake in the side of a hill
and it became the entrance to my base
as soon as i started digging i hit a large gravel deposit, of course everybody(i think) must hate finding gravel and dirt deposits undeground, but when i cleared the gravel, a nice tall open chamber was open inside the hill and i found it interesting so i went on and started hunting gravel and dirt deposits, clearing them and turning them into rooms of my base. it works very nice if you clear it all and level the bottom to the lowest level of the deposit.
its better than excavating stone too, becouse a shovel is cheaper than a pickaxe.
i also found out that using this sistem caves are an annoyance becouse they take away the need to dig linking corridor and getting stone
tl,dr
use a half-buried lake as entrance
hunt underground dirt and gravel deposits, clear them out and level the bottom, now you got a room for the price of a shovel
caves are bad: you dont get stone building corridors and smoothing corners
i think you could use a x-ray texture pack to hunt the deposits(if you dont mind cheating)(still didnt test this)
