I run a Bukkit server and my town needs a name. Until recently, things were going smoothly. The last time I ran my server, almost half my town could no longer be built on by non-admins. I checked all the files and configurations, plugins, made sure no region flags were interfering in worldguard, and made sure the spawn point was still where it should be. Nothing I've done is allowing a rather large area to be built on anymore by non-admins and I had to fence it off and create a half decent story as to why.
Basically, I have fabricated a small history of why the town was built here and what happened before it. The story says that the last location was overrun by a mysterious plague that made the land unlivable and eventually unbuildable. The people had no choice but to move to a new area, which is where it is now. A notice was put up at the spawn point saying the plague has overrun almost half the town and to stay out of the contaminated area, which is blocked off by Nether Brick Fence. I'm planning to expand the town in the other direction and hoping the problem does not worsen.
My current issue is that when it comes to names, I'm about as creative as a rock. I'm hoping that someone can come up with a good name for this town and base it at least somewhat on the history of it. Any ideas?
Well if the population moved there to escape a plague then how about Haven or Sanctuary.
A bit cliched perhaps but kind of appropriate.
I thought about that, but I'm looking for something more unique. My first idea was New Haven, but it's been done too many times. I would like something that would sound like a good place because it would be good contrast for the "plague" that has recently entered the area. I was also considering building an addition to the town underground because the area I built on isn't all that big and the other side has a river that I don't want to ruin. The Overlands may work, since I do want it to eventually contrast opposite of what the town really is at the time, but I'd like as many ideas as possible before I put the final welcome sign up at the spawn point.
Yep, because fencing from hell stopped smallpox, it'll definitely stop a deadly unstoppable plague.
OT:
The way you come up with really good names (Trade secret!):
>find online En. to Latin translator, NOT GoogleTranslate
>come up with a boring name that describes the town in one or two words
>translate those words into Latin, and place 'town'/'city'/'village'/'series of buildings in which were constructed to evade the plague'/etc. at the end.
>???
>profit!
Lots of cities and towns are named after landmarks nearby, their founders, or even named in an attempt to attract traffic. Along the interstate in TN, where I live, there is a town called "Bucksnort". Yes, Bucksnort. Aptly named to attract fir traders and hunters, once upon a time.
Try seeing if there are any features in the landscape nearby that you can use. "Riverside" or "Plainsville".
Or name it after a person. "Johnstown", for example...

I'm horrible with names aswell, and that's a pretty cool story to cover up an error!

Hope this helps!
Just try translating words like sanctuary, peace, refuge, into other languages. In my case, Greek.
