Best way to get the enchantment you want is to open up notepad and translate the symbols. And as your enchant your item, write down what enchantment does what.
I have seen that before and tried to figure out the enchant by comparing the symbols and im pretty sure it doesn't work, ive tried before and it doesnt even come out to be a real word just a jumble of letters.
The symbols are just for looks, they are random and separate from the enchantment. You can translate the into words, but these words don't mean anything about the enchantment either, they're just random.
You CAN however put more or less levels in to affect what enchantment you will get, rare enchantments will usually have a higher chance if you put in more levels.
Actually no they don't.
The words are completely random, they are just there on the button and are separate from the enchantment. The enchantment randomizer doesn't take them into account at all. It isn't even that there's an unrelated word that gives you a specific enchantment, the symbols have no meaning to the enchantment you get.
So you're saying the 3 Unbreaking III books that I just got all in a row by using the same ruin is just a coincidence?
BEST ANSWER TO MY MIND:
Copy all the enchantment phrases you possibly can, then test them all, and then write what enchantments you got from those phrases. Enchantments don't go random. I tested it myself. If you remember an enchantment phrase, then you can remember which enchantments they have.
Keyword: enchantment XD
Actually the same runes mean the same enchantment.
If that were true, someone would have posted a chart, or table of some sort, by now, that maps them to each other. Such a chart would be an extremely handy tool to have, so if you're so sure it would work, why don't you get on it? I'm sure you'd have all our thanks, if it actually did.

Yes, that's what he's saying. That's what the wiki says too. It says that several words (three to five of them, I think?) are chosen from a pre-selected list, and then translated into the "Standard Galactic Alphabet" from the Commander Keen series of 1990's-era PC video games. It also says the words are chosen at random, and have no impact on what enchantment(s) the item will receive. But if you're so sure they're related, I invite you to take on the same project as the guy I quoted above you in this same post. Make a chart that shows what's what, and you will have our eternal gratitude.
That is one AWESOME way for Mojang to say: "Screw you, Bethesda!" because of that Scrolls-lawsuit! Love it!
What about the Notched Pickax? It might just be a coincidence, but I doubt it since there was only one other notched item in TES. I doubt it's meant as a screw you in any way.
I try to enchant my bow with the infinite option, the problem is, how do I know what enchantment the random words stand for? Is there a chart or something someone can link me to?
No you cant tell which enchant is what, Ive spend over 80 levels trying to get Silk touch...still havent got it. I have several enchantment tables and each has different number of Bookshelves, Have almsot tried all of them but I also have notice I got smite from one wanted it on my sword so did the same one and it wasnt smite. All i can say enchanting is retarded, they either need to fix it so you can read it or just take it out, such a waste of time.

Just remember that Bethesda's legal department is at fault for the incident, not its developers. The Notched Pickaxe and (I suspect) the "Elder Scrolls" runes are ways for the developers to cement their good faith towards each other.
If you have WinRAR you can go to the %appdata% folder and open minecraft.jar in there there is a folder called font open it and u will see many pictures there are 2 pictures in particular u want to focus on (alternate, and default). You want to copy the default and paste on desktop and then rename it to alternate the copy that and paste it into your font folder(replace previous alternate) and then you will be able to read what the enchantment says although it says words i don't think it means much.
There is a mod for that. Search on Youtube ''Minecraft enchantment decoder mod;'' What it does: It let's you see what enchantment you will get from that specific line of runes. It's really helpful if you are willing to use mods.
No it wont because the words are nonsense selected at random and have nothing to do with what enchantment you will get.
Tip: The symbols for I and U at the end of the enchantment, usually means enchantments like sharpness III or IV or protection III or IV.
This is also completely and absolutely incorrect, again the words actually have nothing whatsoever to do with the enchantment you will get. One is determined by a very simple "randomized" file in your texture pack and the other is hardcoded into the game probability code for generating enchantments.
These two completely separate entities do not "talk" to each other in any way whatsoever so it is impossible for the words to have any meaning towards what enchantment you will receive. Anyone who has either worked with the texture packs or looked at the code will tell you that they have absolutely nothing to do with each other.
Claiming that they do is the equivalent of claiming that you just saw Herobrine in single player and without mods, it simply is not possible.

The odd letters have NOTHING to do with the enchantment you'll get.
BTW, he/she is not talking about a mod that somehow correlates the words to the enchantment that you will get which is impossible since they don't have any relationship to each other. He is talking about a mod that reads the game engine code and tells you what enchantment you will get.
It would have been nice if he had clarified what he was talking about in the post though considering that the entire thread has been about whether the words had any meaning or not (which they don't).
Yes, but it is not translating the words, it is telling you what the game engine will give you if you select that slot when you hover over the slot, it has nothing to do with the meaningless runes there.

And there are mods that will tell you,

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

That's the closest to finding which enchantment you might get. The symbols mean nothing.
Even then the chances of you getting the enchant you want are about 8% at maximum, unless it's low-tier.
