This is something kind of funny that I have noticed. I sometimes cruise through server threads, just to see what exists out there, and to scope out the competition, and without fail, every time I see someone mentioning that they need help starting a server, there will be a glut of people who "have been admin on a bunch of servers" or "are really good at managing servers." Pardon if I sound rude, but most of these people don't seem fit to help out, let alone have managed several servers. As an admin of a server myself (I am aware of any irony present here) I know the sometimes very hard work that goes into running a server and not going insane, so what accounts for this phenomenon of everyone passing them self as an former admin? (On a side note, it bothers me that someone would ever be admin on more than one server, to me, in order to effectively administrate, you have to be focused, you cannot have complete loyalty to more than one server in that way /rant)
Is it:
A ) People just lie to get easy ranks
B ) People pass of being Op'd on something like a hamachi server as being "admin"
C ) Minecraft is just such a big game that everyone is likely to have found some server in need of an administrator
D ) Magic/Ancient Aliens/Divine Intervention/etc.
Just curious about this, I get plenty of people asking to be admin and claiming to have extensive experience.
Myself i think this is the most common case. It might be connected with people starting a 5 minute hamachi server for 2 people and considering themselves 'responsible admins'.
i agree! people apply for admin or mod ranks on my server and anyone who posts material that seems suspicious i tell them why and they cry that i "Don't Belive them"

That is why I think the best policy is to take 0 "past experience" into account, and judge people only by the merits they present on the server they are playing one. I guess on a new server you don't have the luxury, but I like to see someone for several weeks before I consider them for a position like moderator, and I'd say that 90% of people aren't fit for roles with responsibility in Minecraft.

I´m not only a Admin, i host my my own server...
Seriously, why do you care?
Even if i only host a server of 4 (me included) i know a thing or two about administrating a server, and i could definitely help.
Its easy to host your own private server so its not surprising so many have actually done it.
I realize you´re probably talking about big-game rented servers, which i have no idea how to run. But a "Admin" does not specify how big of a server it is or even what kind.
If you really care that people are using the same "rank" as you but don´t actually admin as much as you... Then, actually you can´t do anything, deal with it :wink.gif:

While I understand your core point, there is a big difference between hosting a server with 4 people and 20+. While I could tell the content of someone's character (the most important part) from how they run a server of any size, it is hard to navigate from hosting a server with friends to having to deal with larger-server issues. While I don't doubt that you are able to manage your server's affairs well, I wouldn't have the confidence to have you administrate a larger server without experience outside of what you have said.

Of course most of what you said is correct. But this seems to me to be a fight over a title or a ´rank´, its kinda silly to me.
Although you mentioned that ´they´ weren´t fit to help, calling them self Admins and think they are qualified to help. Even if they´re not, they´ll crash and burn and learn their lesson (hopefully)
This post just seems sort of pointless to me, no offense.
As a server owner myself (ironic but no BS, look in my sig), I know that there is no way possible to effectively administrate multiple servers at once (the word effectively is important here), especially if you are the main admin.

Haha I was just curious as to what is the cause of the phenomenon.
Probably a little bit of A and B, but that's because people think "admin" is an all powerful title. It's really not, you just happen to be the one that controls the server being up or down. Big servers that actually have admins making bukkit changes, etc are more deserving of a "real" admin title.
Hey, I can start running minecraft_server.exe off my desktop and be an admin, but that doesn't mean I know what I'm doing.
I've had the same problem on my server. Every now and then somebody asks to be Admin and backs up their claim with "I've been admin on a bunch of other servers, I know what I'm doing."
It's usually people who have just joined, and then leave shortly after their request is refused.
I think the problem is the lack of actual responsible server owners. A majority of servers are ran by people who really just want to have dominion over other people, and will just make random people admins because:
1.) They can't do it themselves, so they accept any help they can get
2.) The person they make an admin has sent money to the server.
3.) The admin is the owners best friend/boyfriend/girlfriend/relative/random person he knows.
It's just idiotic. Hopefully, the people who run their servers responsibly will be able to suck in the users from the bad servers, causing the bad servers to shut down.
Effectively administrating a server is a difficult task. When I'm not at school (I'm only 15), I need to watch the console like a hawk a majority of the time to keep the cheaters out.
I have considered getting moderators, but I haven't seen any people on my server that would be able to effectively handle the job.
Kind of went on a ramble, but that's just how I roll :tongue.gif:
Not to speak for how anyone else manages their own servers; but ours has no OPS, no Admins.
You play vanilla, with the limitations of vanilla, and you like it. The end.
Now that is not to say I haven't had people ask for OP / admin powers; they just don't get it, because no one does.

It makes sense why everybody wants to be an administrator, or why everybody wants to make their own server. In a way it often leads to being more than just a power trip or a fast track to recognition to these players - but in their eyes it can be seen as a necessity to protect your creations. Of course, it takes more than just administrator status to protect your creations, however, I think we've already established here that common knowledge on these forums if anything but, to the general gamer base.
Most of the kids that ask for admin privileges do it for the title and the power rush they get from it.
My thought about this is that, you're not an admin until the server runs for at least 3 months, and the server bills are paid.

Run a server once on your local machine, become Admin
In all seriousness, servers that look at outside experience only, make posts looking for Admins here on the forum or accept applications from outside players are generally going to get crap results. The best practice IMO is to look internally for good staff. Look for players that play a lot on your server and are helpful.

We always look internally for staff, unless you are just starting out it is the best possible way to run a server. Promoting outside people is never a good policy if you can help it.
