So I started a new solo map with a random seed just to see what I would get. I have Buildcraft, Not Enough Items, and Redpower for mods. My intention was to not cheat at all but I have a problem. In order to harvest the very large oil deposit where I have began construction of my base, I need waterproof pipes. For those unfamiliar with Buildcraft, waterproofing a pipe requires Cactus Green be converted into a waterproofing material. Cactus Green is made by processing a block of cactus in a furnace. My problem is this. I am in an enormous arctic biome with no desert in sight. I did manage to find a forest biome but it seems to go on forever and I barely found my way back to my base. Also, though there is some sand scattered about, there isn't very much available for the production of glass. My only options seem to be to either break down and use Not Enough Items to give myself the sand and the waterproofing material that I need, or perhaps just enough cactus to start a cactus farm - Either way is cheating - Or go on some blind quest to find a desert with no idea how to locate one or any real way of finding my way back home once I do, other than killing myself to respawn at my bed.
Minecraft is a sandbox game, so you're free to play however appeals to you.
You can go half download amidst, to give you a map of where all your biomes are on that seed. Raw information doesn't seem that much of a crime to acquire.
If you choose to find a desert, however, make sure to make a compass, so you can find your way back easily.
I think you should make a strip mine and get the resources for a few maps, but you would need a reeds farm to get paper. anyway, when you find a desert biome you can use the maps to get back to your base.

I'm just a regular kid who likes to play games. 'nuff said.
I know I could eventually find one if I keep looking. That's not the issue. The issue is finding my way back home once I get there. Anyone have any tips for doing that? Hmm... I just had a thought, I could make a compass that would point me toward my spawn point, but I don't know if Notch fixed it to point to your current spawn point or to your original spawn point. Anyone know that?
There's a mod called Rei's Minimap that displays a map at the top of the screen, and it allows you to set waypoints. Waypoint your house, and you're all set.
That may be acceptable. I don't see that as cheating; more like, doing something you could logically do irl.
Yeah that was my thought but the problem was that my compass pointed to my original spawn point, not my base. I did manage to find a desert, though it was a very long trip. I set the compass to point straight behind me (toward my original spawn) and just walked forward (away from my original spawn) until I found a desert. Took a long time but getting back was easy.
You can do whatever you want in Minecraft. Nothing can be considered cheating.
I must disagree with you and all the others who posted this same point. My view is that doing anything that is not done "legitimately" is cheating. If I opened NEI and gave myself a stack of diamonds, cheating. If I manually mine a stack of diamonds, not cheating. If I painstakingly build a skyscraper at the risk of falling to my death, not cheating. If I pop into creative mode to fly around while I build, cheating. That said, if I were using industrial craft with its jet pack and flying around to build my tower, that would not be cheating, so long as I built the jet pack myself from materials that I gathered, myself.
That's my view on "cheating." It's just my personal view (or opinion, if you will) and if your opinion differs from mine, that's ok. Neither one of us is "right" or "wrong." Opinions are just that, opinions, not facts.
Are you sure? The mod may require natural harvesting to access the jetpack, but, using your logic, flight is cheating. Would you consider a mod that lets you fly on holding dirt (for example) cheating? Sure, IndustrialCraft requires more materials, but you could call it cheating as much as you could call using TMI cheating.
In all reality, there is no cheating. All there really is is legitimacy, which is different. If you bought a chess set, would you be arrested or something for, say, letting a pawn move two spaces? It's your game, not anybody else's. If you want to spawn one cactus and only slightly break legitimacy, go ahead. It is your game =P
Jet pack point - I don't see it as cheating because it's not just a simple matter of clicking a button to do it. Jet packs do not have infinite fuel nor are they capable of hovering motionless like you can with creative mode flying. Also, if you are high enough and your jet pack fails you for whatever reason, fuel runs out, lag spike kills the jet pack temporarily, you fall and you die unless you are over deep water.
Chess point - Pawns can move two spaces, on their first move. But otherwise, yes its cheating if you move a pawn two spaces after its first turn. Just like it would be cheating to move your king more than one space (unless castling) or move a rook diagonally. The game has specific rules and to do things that are outside those rules are at best unsportsmanlike exploitation of a loophole but most often just plain and simple cheating.
Opinions would be appreciated.
Keep exploring. Your bound to find a desert somewhere.

It likely wouldn't be enjoyable to you if you had to spend possible real life days looking for cactus.
Just spawn some in and go crazy.
Cheers!

Cheating is ok if you want to cheat.
If you don't want to cheat, don't.
