Except this isn't such a situation. You can't compare, say, being arrested for drunk driving and claiming ignorance with not getting a certain perk for being hipster enough.
Massive difference between doing something early and being 'hipster'.
Massive difference between doing something early and being 'hipster'.
You're suggesting that, by playing Minecraft before it was as popular, you get some semblance of reward or entitlement to lord it over anyone else. Seems pretty hipster to me.
How about you guys stop arguing. I think everyone should just get a cape. Why do you care if someone uses a minecon cape? Why do you need to feel superior? Stop being babies about it and accept it for what it is. Also, don't say it won't be cool anymore. Hipsters.
I personally do not understand why there is such elitism concerning capes, that it somehow must always be a mark of distinction and recognition for only those who went to MineCon or only for people who bought the game as alpha and/or beta players or only for those who came even before that. Nor do I understand the sentiment that the only reason a person would want a cape would be for its exclusivity and that it's cool solely for the reason that it is "rare".
I don't want a cape because it would give me some bizarre notion of being "special" and more "special" than those (sarcasm commencing) "bandwagoners" who bought in the game in beta or in full release (as suggestions about capes tend to be that Alpha players should get capes). I already know I bought the game in Alpha and I don't see why that matters, why there must be something given to me proclaiming to the world when I bought the game and how that somehow makes me "better" than other people (because that's really the gist of having something exclusive).
Do not mistake me for begrudging those who already have capes such as those who attended MineCon. I like capes and I want one because I think the straight-as-a-piece-of-cardboard cape attached to unnaturally square shoulders, flapping behind whilst my avatar runs looks bad ass. As of now, I use a mod to give myself a cape and it probably looks a hell of better than anything Jeb or Notch could give me simply because it fits my avatar and Minecraft is all about customization for me.
I can do whatever I want in the game. Perhaps I don't like how an item or a block appears, well I can fix it to suit my tastes. Maybe I want my avatar to look like a knight, or a cow, or some iconic video game character, I can make that happen. Maybe I want to build a grand, spacious Tudor Manor with beautiful French gardens and fountains or a humble log cabin in the midst of the forest? Yep, I can do that too. An ethereal floating castle amongst the clouds or an imposing fortress sitting on the flat plains or even a palace ensconced upon a mountain top? I have my pick, I could even construct all three.
So yes, I would like a cape, one that I can use my own texture for. And there, of course, should be an option to turn off capes for those who simply don't want it.
Just my two cents,

Well Saidsomeone should make a mod that allows a red/green/blue/yellow/white cape to be attatched to chest armor!
infact, i might just decide to be that someone. :3
heres my opinion capes are and should be a rare thats the way mojang planned it but, there should be a public way to get them but it should not be announced. heres the idea i came up with it ties into the xbox360 edition of minecraft but it shouldent be for simply buying the game, what should happen is there is a thing were you can connect your pc minecraft to your xbox minecraft (this can be used to apply your pc skin also) and once in a very long period of time there should be a day or a weekend etc. where if you do something special (getting echivements, buying avatar items etc.) and then you are sent to an xbox pop up thing where if you have the pc version it tells you you did the mystery activity and it sends the cape to your pc account and you have the cape. but the cape would not be very elaborate just something like a mob face or a block. this will not give out alot of capes and heres the resons... 1.it is not announced this will happen 2.not all minecrafters have 360 edition 3.the players dont have a long period of time to do the action. it will give about 500 to 2500 players capes, thats not alot (minecon gave over 5000!) but please PM me back so we can talk about it.
...Why do we need capes? Let them keep their capes as a special souvenir for going the extra mile for minecraft. It's not like we're missing out on anything.
You go to MineCon you get a cape, you don't go you don't get a cape. That's the system your arguement is invalid.
Before I even respond to this, I want to clarify something:
I do not care about capes. I do not care that certain people get capes and everyone else doesn't.
What I do care about, however, is when people use flawed logic and reasoning and claim their point is valid. Firstly, people have gotten capes for less than actually attending Minecon. Secondly, just because a system works the way it does does not mean it can't be changed. Thirdly, old memes aren't funny.
If cape's were available to everyone, they would lose that "rare" feeling. Though I do think there should be some sort of free, but extremely difficult event for getting a cape besides minecon.

I don't agree with custom capes at all. People that go to minecon are obviously dedicated players and should have the cape to show it. If everyone had a cape, it would ruin the point.
Capes should be for EVERYONE. However, people who attend Minecon should get some type exclusive cape we can't. As long as we can have at least one cape, then it's fine. We spend our money on this game, and play it non stop, and for what? No extra perks? It's stupid and not really fair to only reward people who have the 100$s of dollars to spend to Minecon while the rest of us, who don't have enough, have to twiddle our thumbs and get nothing.
No, everyone should not have capes. Capes are rare, and are given out for special reasons. Remember Pigmen? The original suggester, Miclee, got a personal cape from Notch for it, but it was removed because of people asking for personal capes for themselves.
Maybe everyone who suggests something could get a cape. Right now the only "main" ways to get capes are 1. go to Minecon, or 2. Get hired by Mojang.
Well, It would be great if everyone had capes. An Idea I have is that everyone can have a cape. But they are capes that can only be obtain by going to Minecon and those Minecon capes should look good.
If you think of going to Minecon "the time of your life", you abviously need to find a new hobby. Minecraft is a fenomenal game, but not something to get worked up about. I do applaud your enthusiasm for wanting to get capes for everyone, but then capes wouldnt be cool anymore. Everyone would have em'
I agree. Many people can't afford to pay for a 2-way flight, a hotel room, and a minecon ticket. What I think should happen is that there could be "events" hosted my Mojang on a Minecraft server once every few weeks or months. Everyone who joins the server at that time and participates in the event would get a cape. The event could be something like a huge pvp match or just plain old survival. The server could hold about 100-500 people, keeping capes rare, but still giving every minecraft player a chance for a cape. All in all, this would allow Minecraft players who can't afford or don't want to go minecon a chance to see the Mojang team and have a shot at getting a cape.
