As soon as the 1.0 release was in sight people started to complain that minecraft would be released and then would stop updating. As someone who has been in game communities like minecraft before, I knew that there would be further updates, do I ignored all of the topics about no more updates.
Then 1.0 did come out. Notch immediately left, meaning that mojang's top priority was no longer minecraft, which is acceptable since it does have two other games. For an entire month the only news from mojang was about minecon, lots of exciting events but no update notes. After a couple of weeks Jeb did finally speak to the public sbout future updates, revealing that the next update would be in several months. So I thought ok there has to be something else to do while we wait for small updates.
Then the forum homepage started spitting out news again. Cobalt. Cobalt Cobalt Cobalt. Meaning, Jeb is practically the only person working on minecraft while all of mojang is working on scrolls and cobalt. Do yes, minecraft is over
Mojang has already stated that they will be hiring an AI person some time this month to continue working on certain aspects of Minecraft, so I wouldn't say that they have given up on Minecraft just yet.

Actually Jeb was pulled off Minecraft to push out the release of Cobalt.... so who's working on Minecraft during that time? Priorities have definately switched and Minecraft is on the back burner. Minecraft wasn't even ready for full release... The End not working right, NPCs with no AI still, plus bunch of other unfinished crap.
Seems like it was hey give us your money early and we will never complete this game. My honest opinion.

My mistake, there are 0 people working on minecraft until cobalt gets released. Hey wait, cobalt is in Alpha.
And totally true, minecraft is nowhere near finished and got paused in the middle of the spectrum between sandbox and RPG, making it simply annoying
Really? I heard that there was going to be expansion packs or something...
I would actually enjoy all production of minecraft to stop for some good reasons.
Mods are easier.
I feel jeb and notch are running out of ideas and are just putting in some crap that in my opinon is taking away from the basics of the game.
On top of that ^^^ I was going to make a cool mod but it is harder to mod because at 1.7 everything was basic but everything is becoming more and more complicated making it more of a solid game rather than something that can be molded into your own type of game.
The code would be open source finally.
Production would still go on just not by mojang. It would allow more other stuff by mojang and a few people would make a few mod packs that would be considered continuing the game.

My post says that exactly. They either mold it and finish it or make it more like 1.7 where we can mold it to our own liking. I want the 1.7 kind personally but...
Oh quite whining. Nothing is going to stop because a new game is coming out. The company, like Minecraft, is growing. They're a bit under-staffed, so they're getting spread thin, they aren't "deprioritizing". They wouldn't just dump Minecraft, their number one hit and token to fame. They are going to milk it for all it is worth.
Relax. Minecraft is here to stay. And if not? Who cares. Modders will pick up whatever Mojang doesn't, anyway.

They wouldn't dump Minecraft early to get early cash and not try to get more money out of their number one game in the future. And if they did release it early to get some faster cash, what do I care. I got it in Alpha, they need the cash for growing and staffing, and will most likely do what they can to continue to make more money off Minecraft. Think about it like a business. They won't ignore millions of their customers by just ignoring their groundbreaking game.
Although I do agree it was released at an awkward stage of "pubertizing" into an RPG game.
-Starts game.
-Open Alpha
-lots of people buy game
-release
-more people buy game
-less attention to game
-more attention to other projects
-slowly,but surly, game continues updateing
EDIT: they are undersatffed anyway
EDIT2:Also this is freaking jungle wild speculation
Proof positive that nobody is working on Minecraft.
Kinda makes me dissapointed that they would put the game that made them MILLIONS on the back burner. Yeah I understand that they hired someone to start working with Jeb on Minecraft in January, but why has Jeb pulled himself off as well as Notch removing himself from the project? IMO Cobalt really isn't that great of a game to put all the attention on.
Once Minecraft is officially done and no more changes to ever be made again, a clan of Modders could come together as a new development team. They would release new updates in the form of a mod and continue developing minecraft. Of course for legal reasons, this would remain a mod and not forced.
They are a company, they are understaffed (A big game with less than 20 staffs.. what?). First, think of other companies like, Blizzard, they are a big company, making them able to focus on different things simultaneously. Mojang is the opposite, they are a less-than-20-staffs company, with a huge game hit.
TL;DR They can't focus on MineCraft now, and quit whining

Sheesh, have a little patience for once. Any Minecraft development stoppage is most certainly temporary, and doesn't need a thread proclaiming the end of the world.
Notch left? He is the leader of a company, his priorities shouldnt be minecraft, but the whole company, that means he needs to work on the other games of Mojang and if he doesnt in some years Mojang will be forgotten by everyone, that is how the world works, you need to release new stuff or people will get bored.
Mojang´s priority is not minecraft? Notch hired a new programmer to work on minecraft, god... he was leaving so he hired someone new to work with jeb in minecrat
Jeb the only person working on the game? Notch hired a new programmer
Mojang workin on scrolls and cobalt? AND MINECRAFT!, Jeb is working on cobalt and minecraft, and the other guy in Oxeye is also working on cobalt, while notch and probably the others at mojang work on scrolls
FAIL THREAD.
Here you go , a list of people working on Mojang´s games.
Minecraft :
- Jens bergensten
- The new guy i dont know his name
Cobalt :
- Jens bergensten
-Daniel Brynof
Scrolls :
- Markus Persson
*probably others*
What does this means?
2 people or MORE are working on COBALT.
2 people or MORE are working on minecraft
1 guy or MORE are working on scrolls.
Cobalt and Minecraft are both small " indie " ( or atleast it was ) games, 2 programmers are more than enough for Minecraft and Cobalt
IN FACT, Notch made most of minecraft on his own, then he made mojang with the MILLIONS he made ALONE.
Been working on. You can work on 2 things at once you know
Uh, not really. Even for small projects like Minecraft, you really need the focus of at least one or two full-time people to give it quality and polish. As we can see, Minecraft is anything but that.
Notch left? He is the leader of a company, his priorities shouldnt be minecraft, but the whole company, that means he needs to work on the other games of Mojang and if he doesnt in some years Mojang will be forgotten by everyone, that is how the world works, you need to release new stuff or people will get bored.
Usually, start-ups focus on one, maybe two products at a time. What Mojang is doing now is a bit unorthodox. It may pay off, it may not. It's certainly unfortunate for Minecraft. They made all their money on Minecraft and now have left it to rot. The fans eventually will come to dislike Mojang for this.
Mojang´s priority is not minecraft? Notch hired a new programmer to work on minecraft, god... he was leaving so he hired someone new to work with jeb in minecrat
We don't know much about this new person except that they will do AI work. Given that that's a small part of the Minecraft experience, even if this person was kickass, they still wouldn't be able to fix the huge number of other bugs and misfeatures and bad design decisions.
So we have three people working on, what, four games now? Each game should have at least two or three people working on it, if not more. Having that many people spread over that many projects does not work that well. We can see it in the quality of the product. I've also experienced it firsthand.

i kinda agree to both sides but my best bet is once they release their new game and realize minecraft is better they will try to come back and make more money with it. well i hope they will...

Besides, we're getting at least one more major update.
