Well then we should at least make the x-hill biomes bigger, more common and give them some height variety. And we should make extreme hills grass look less blue(and add a few more trees)
Height variety is not possible with current generation. So either all X-hills of same kind will have same height or you will need DesertHills1, DesertHills2 etc. Both solutions are terrible.

I think you don't even know what variation means... Variation: Differ in size, amount, degree, or nature from something else of the same general class: "the properties vary in price"
If different mountains vary in height, then that means that there is heigh variation as some mountains differ in height to others.

There's no variation in the extreme hills part of that picture, but that is a completely false representation of what they are like.
It is like that. Maybe they vary in width, but not in height. They can't be taller than their limit, and they can't be much lower than their height limit.
Yeah, but they can be min size, max size or anywhere in between. Meaning that there is variation and that your picture is completely false.
min height == ground height. That picture has max height (Mountains tops), min height (Between mountains) and between (Slopes).
And if you look to plains and swamp, you can notive that there are tiny mountains too, with 5-10 block height. Yes, they are mountains. And they are spammed together too. They are just low because min and max height there are almost same.
This is a very long thread, so obviously I haven't read very much of it except the beginning, but I agree that there is a big difference in the way terrain used to spawn. The algorithm was changed in 1.8, and again changed right before or just after 1.0. It seems perfectly possible for them to include both algorithms and make it an option which algorithm to use when creating a map, just like the options for superflat and the new-ish "large biomes". If this topic captures any mojang employee's attention as being a community outcry, it seems like making it an option would be the fastest solution to please the most people.
So again, make alternative terrain generation algorithms available as an option at world creation.
I say no and yes. The terrain is boring in comparison to alpha/beta and I so f**king love that. I like the idea of game becoming as boring as possible so the player makes it intresting for themselves. And if you don't like the terrain there are mods. I really like making the game intresting for myself rather than having it already fun and intresting. Minecraft is one of the games in witch that is possible.
Well, you can play on Superflat.

Minecraft is not minecraft now. Minecraft without 1.7 terrain and the sense of freedom players loved is not minecraft. Sure i love the new features, but every structure must have a base. Here's my idea: we take let the Mojang team take a vacation, except for Notch and Jeb, and let them edit minecraft in a way that it was before. No "Adventure updates", no more "Villages" and "The End", just Minecraft in it's entirety and add features people actually want and request.
nonononoNONONONOnonono not Dinnerbone. Zombie armor? Ugh. VILLAGER *cough* NO MORE VILLAGERS *cough* Infection? All his. Not Dinnerbone.
I like does additions, Terrain and Difficulty(Combat) really need fixxing so Dinnerbones current additions for 1.4 are fine but I'm expecting them to do a major terrain overhaul in 1.5 Atleast
I feel that Large Biomes and 1.3 was a decent improvement, but a return to a style more present in Beta would be best. I wish that I could have mountains in any biome, and that a transition from plains to mountains or jungles wouldn't look like two different worlds with a chunk error.

Life is like a clogged toilet: It's full of crap until you do something worth remembering in it.
I wouldn't be against Mojang hiring a guy on full time to do nothing but work on the terrain, as long as it gets done.
Also, is the Bukkit team actually still part of Mojang? I thought they were hired on and since then I've heard very little out of the progress they are supposed to be making.
Here's a rundown of how I think they are splitting their efforts. I'm thinking Bukkit got there, wanted to finish working on the Mod API, opened up the core program and realize that it was just a bunch of empty classes that would require a ton more time than they figured. Then 1.4 was held back to compensate.
Meanwhile, Jeb and Dinnerbone get to work on RPG stuff because Dinnerbone really only knows how to work with entities and Jeb is really only good at picking up the slack that Notch created when he would have his brain-farts so infrequently since the beginning of 1.8pre.
Then Notch leaves after delivering terrain so uninspired that he forgot to add roses, snow, and mountains (Really!? How can some people think current gen is better than 1.7.3 when it didn't even launch with ROSES and SNOW!?), Jeb takes up the torch of the entire game, makes beaches and X-hills their own biomes because he has no idea what mess of cobwebs Notch put up, and here we are with vertical beaches, endless biomes of flat terrain, and mountains that are so forced that even their heights are the same...
And some people still think 1.8 and up is better than 1.7.3? The development process alone is horrible enough to be deal-breaker.

You know, I was about to stop reading because it seemed kind of hostile, but I think you're totally right. I don't wanna seem mean to the developers but the mess they keep leaving is very very pathetic. Quote added to OP.
I'm seriously contemplating on putting this in the OP. It actually made me laugh.
PS: YOU FORGOT TO PUT THE SWISS-CHEESE HOLES THROUGHOUT THE PLAIN AND EH!!!!
@Manu: No it's not. It actually satires it pretty well. All height changes are spammed together plus it's the only biome with true height range.
And if you look to plains and swamp, you can notive that there are tiny mountains too, with 5-10 block height. Yes, they are mountains. And they are spammed together too. They are just low because min and max height there are almost same.

Added caves, structures and Beta terrain.
But they all ignore terrain. Looks like there are some hidden reasons they don't say about.
That diagram made me laugh so hard, well done!
