I partly agree with this simply because yes, it has gotten boring. My biggest complaint at this time however is that with the addition of a new, higher world height, we haven't seen this change the terrain at all. I was hoping that we would start seeing elevated land levels (no country is totally flat) that allowed for new and interesting "sub-biomes" such as waterfalls, lakes, valleys, plateaus, etc.
Watch the video until the end when they do a flyby of the entire village. There's a lake (a huge lake) on a seaside cliff with a huge waterfall. Why does someone have to use a mod to get that? Shouldn't the terrain be generating stuff like that already?
As well, why do we not have giant cave structures much like the nether being created underground?
Just another example of how much better terrain and biome generation could be.
IMO although terrain can always be improved I think there are a lot of complainers on this forum. Before 1.8 it was all
'dear god I can't play the game as biomes are too messed up'
or
'mountains need to be more common'
and even
'oceans are stupidly small, they need to be bigger'.
I didn't mind the change between 1.7.3 and 1.8. In my main world my underground house is on the side of a ravine with farms along the bottom, there are cool mountains nearby with overhangs and lakes underneath. People like building towns by the sides of rivers or oceans with no land in sight. I can still find sandy hills and plenty or varying terrain.
I see no real problems with the current terrain. People seem to forget that the previous version was just as capable of spawning vast snowy wastelands or plains.
I guess the only way to fix this is to add 1.7.3 generation as a world type (probably under the name 'small biomes') with the option of the current gen as well (big biomes)
Oh I love the current biome size and would gladly have them bigger, however, I really want to see more diversified biomes. It's true that the biomes have become a little too cookie cutter-esq and limited. As seen in the videos I posted above your post, there are a lot more biomes that could be had from this game if the dev team took the time to make it so.
R.I.P Removed biomes. People complained about 1.7.3 because the biomes/oceans actually WERE too small, but Mojang could've fixed that by simply making them bigger.
I do belive that the terrain has gotten a little less fun. Though what Mojang is trying to do is make biomes clean and smooth instead of everything with hills, mountains, and random biomes mixed. I would ask for a better variety in biome generation cause I have a higher chance of spawning in a regular biome instead of on an island or some crazy biomeYou know what I haven't seen? Waterfalls, strange caves, and custom terrain.
You are right, worlds did become ugly in 1.8. I miss spawning on a beach and looking at the forest behind me and saying,"This is going to be fun." Now its just,"Yaaay, i spawed on a bare mountain that has no use at all." *deltes world*. There is no variety, i want trees on top of THOSE mountains and overhangs in THAT tundra biome. I miss spawning near gravel beaches because you could get tons of flint for arrows and all those different color pixels made a picture in your mind. I know you can get mod that get old world generation in minecraft, but its not the same because they dont perfect it. I even remember on world with a valcano-shaped mountain that was open in the middle and a floating island in the center, or the flat topped mountains where you could build an epic base. You're right, minecraft has become bleak, and it better change, or im just going to stop playing.

Yeah, the underground is cool because you have a never ending complex surrounded by cave openings and ravines. However this is bad for the players that don't want to find a cave opening every time they mine 5 blocks. These "pretty cool mountains" you see are the only mountains that exist. I bet you they are the dull-green extreme hills with no trees. We aren't complaining about the existence rivers or oceans, but it'd be nice if some oceans had more to it than just water. Your sandy hills are mediocre compared to the sandy mountains that existed before. And again, biome size has NOTHING to do with this.
If you can prove this thread wrong with some pictures, you should do it. So far, no one has been able to.
I like some of the features of the new biomes, however, they could definitely improve them a lot! Terrain generation has become more 'here we will have nice flat stuff everywhere' and the biomes don't mix things up like they used to.
What I would like to see is a control interface for the biome generation code where we could directly tweak what variety each biome would have and to what degree. If and when the Mod API comes out I will look for mods that offer the option to tweak biome generation settings so that we can have as much variation as we want in whichever biomes we want, right down to how many trees will spawn on an island in an ocean biome at my spawn point, and can even control how frequently island landmasses will pop up on an ocean biome so I don't have to boat 14000+ tiles just to find land if I pick the wrong random direction.
I also hope Mojang themselves will allow more direct control of terrain generation, as the current one sometimes generates such bland terrain the only reason I will build something there is for an access point to a mineshaft or mob spawner. I love the jungle biomes but they are terribly slow to navigate through, due to the leaves and vines hanging around most jungles, however, I suppose that is to be expected somewhat. I wouldn't mind, though, if there were obvious jungle pathways running through jungles that seemed to have been put there intentionally.
Regarding villages, I think they should not be too frequent but they should be more versatile and capable of spawning in more biomes with house constructions altered to fit the landscape instead of the current let's build the same kind of village houses whether there's terrain in the way or not. Also, they should at least have doors in the village all generated with proper access, a lot of villages I have to dig or place blocks to the entrances just to find out if there's anything interesting in them.
I'd also be in favour of fewer mineshafts with the likelihood of cave spider spawners being somewhat harder to just randomly run into. If I see a cave spider spawner, I will just switch to peaceful mode, the little buggers are grossly overpowered unless you have developed a proper alchemy setup which takes a lot of time to do properly and even then they're an annoying monster pest mob to deal with.
I'd like to see more variety in hills, around about 11w47a before the 1.0 update, the terrain was getting really funky looking mountain generation in it, with lots of overhanging places supported by a small amount of hills or mountain. I also want the iron distribution to stay exactly as it is, I have to mine a lot if I want to get any, or go spelunking in dangerous caves, which is fine with me.
I'd also like to see an in-game Mojang-developed craftable means of finding mob spawners, irrespective of which dimension they're located in. I expect it should cost me something similar to an enchanting table in terms of resources, with perhaps iron or redstone instead of the obsidian, and a way to set what monster type you're after.
Just recently my internet connection wasn't being a fag and i saw the 1.7.3 map pictures. They're beautiful. AMAZING. ****ING AMAZING. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE MOJANG. WHAT THE **** HAVE YOU DONE.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
I didn't play prior to this change but I agree with the premise that the generator is a bit bland. I like the size of the biomes for the most part but not how they change so dramatically and how they're just random. I made a couple ideas in paint to demonstrate what I think it should be like:
This is an example of what often happens in nature, storms come in from the ocean, hit a mountain range and drop all of their precipitation. The other side of the mountain is then a barren desert. Examples of this are california/nevada and india/china.
This is an example showing a birds eye view of a jungle area. Weather moves into the land and dumps more and more as it goes up a mountain side, there's a lot of rivers (I've only showed one) and rainfall that create forests and as you reach sea level you get swamps and river deltas. Examples of this are in brasil, india and china.
I just think it would make the game a lot more interesting if the biomes looked like they do in the real world.
I don't like the reduced size of the new biomes, which appear smaller both horizontally and vertically, nor the excessive amount of water. Granted, more water was needed than in 1.7. But the end result appears as if terrain has been dropped 20-30 blocks, which creates more water and a bunch of tiny islands compared to the large continents we had in 1.7.
It also makes no sense to have desert biomes next to tundra or jungle, especially with the biomes being so small now. I have a really hard time finding interesting places to build now.

Are you joking biomes were increased 10 fold in size after 1.8

Even though people like you guys are supporting, you still don't seem to know that biome placement has nothing to do with this argument. In fact, if you want forced generation like that (ex: Jungles should ONLY be next to forests) you are taking away variation and variability from the game, killing the generator even more. It shouldn't BE anything. Biome placement should be random. Yeah sure, the biome-to-biome transitions might need to be cleaner but in no way should forced generation ever occur. It's about what's within the biomes, not the biomes themselves. The realism is what's killing the game. I don't want realism if it'll make the game boring.

The subject is "Did the terrain become boring?".
Yes, for the reasons I gave. The fact that you don't like my reasons is meaningless.
Are you joking biomes were increased 10 fold in size after 1.8
We must not be playing the same game then. I don't see how it's possible for the biomes to be any smaller than they are in my survival mode server. My territory is centered around x=293. It's an Extreme Hills biome. Then there's a river biome at 236, swamp at 233, Taiga at 104, River at 7, Taiga at -12, River at -63, Taiga at -81, Forest at -86, River at -111, Forest at -133, Forest Hills at 133, Forest at 342, River at -350, Forest at -357, Forest Hills at -375, Forest at -392, River at -436, etc. (the later forest area is the largest continental area I've seen).
On the other hand, it is possible that because there were fewer different types of biomes in 1.7, that it wasn't as apparent when they changed. I would agree that Forest and Forest Hills are similar enough is doesn't matter. But the same would hold true for 1.7 biome changes.

I have perfectly good reasons to disagree with your opinion. You want forced generation that would step up Minecraft in terms of realism. However forced generation means you know what's coming next. There are no surprises. In a randomized world, you would have the chance to find an area of several biomes that would mix to create a sense of realism. There's also a chance you can find something unrealistic. This way, everyone is happy.

Tall mountains randomly. some mountains with trees. some without. some really high sand mountains. some floating islands.
They need to make it so each world truly has it's own characteristics
