the terrain is boring as it is. the only thing you can do to solve this at them moment is to try and find an area to settle where biomes converge and there is a ravine and a river or some ocean nearby. other than that you will get no variety.
basically the game forces you to explore now to find a unique area... or even a suitable one to settle. you cant build anywhere is there isnt trees... and who wants their spawn to be in the tundra, ocean, or a swamp.
I completely agree. The only fun biome now are then huge mountains with floating islands. But eventually even those become a little boring. I also agree with the fact that seeds are being repetitive. Every seed I check out has something to do with mountains. Enough!
The only thing keeping me playing Minecraft at this point in time are the mods. I love minecraft, but the terrain has become boring.
Swamp is crowded, and not too pretty (Just like real swamps!)
However the real thing I am having trouble with is that the other biomes that i expected not to be flat is indeed flat. The forest biomes are classic hill-filled areas, but with tons of trees.
I say a little more hills! even if they are still shorter than the old ones!
I agree that the terrain generator needs some work. The bad thing is that I'm sick of restarting a world each time it gets changed. Having the terrain generation complete should have been top priority for a 1.0 release, but alas, it looks like we'll still see some tweaks to it.
I miss the awe-inspiring landscapes, and the underground caves being interesting. Now, everything looks pretty much the same with a few minor differences, and if you find one cave it's almost guaranteed to connect to every other cave via ravine, or abandoned mineshaft, meaning they're nearly impossible to navigate/light up, and completely impossible to manage if you're trying to clear an area for a massive construction. With the new terrain generation they should have just named the game 'Cavecraft' because mining isn't really practical when digging 20 blocks in any direction underground leads to a never-ending cave system. Just seems like all the 'epic vistas' have moved underground, and the surface has become completely unappealing. There was a lot of promise in the biome additions, and underground terrain features, but they essentially threw out everything that made the terrain generation amazing in favor of a bland boring surface, and a single world encompassing cave system.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My signature is my friend. It is my thoughts. I must master it as I must master minecraft.
I have an old world, and I must say that it is really flat and bland compared to my 1.8 and 1.0 worlds. I like this terrain generator a lot more. In my old world, I have a random area of snow right next to my plain, with some random holes in the ground everywhere (Though I do kind of like the holes).
Putting mountains in their own special biome doesn't make sense on any level. It's not good in terms of gameplay, it's not good in terms of aesthetics and it's not realistic. I just - I don't even - Bah!
I agree. They don't look good either. This probably happened because Mojang was rushing and had to fix NPC Villages forming in weird ways. They did a **** job with that.
Yes it has!
The only place I like to build my houses are in the flatter area's of mountain bio's.
There should be the option to choose between world generator 1.7.3< and 1.0.0 when you create your world. Although the downside is you would loose the strongholds, ravines and other stuff.
I think the problem is that the terrain is way too predictable.
In a desert, you expect flat sandy areas for miles.
Trees, trees, trees, and trees.
Vines, black water, sudden river, black water, vines, chunky trees.
Nothing but grass.
MOUNTAIN.
More grass.
Montain should spawn anywhere. That's why <1.8 terrain generation was good. Now every biome looks the same. Deserts, forest etc are always flat, and montains dont have biome variation.
I think there are good and bad things about both the old and new generation. Old generation, I feel, was tootoo random, whereas now it is exaggeratedly generic.
Pre-1.8:
-Hey, a desert! Wait... why is it snowing?
-Why does my forest have random patches of desert in it?
-Look at this cave system!, It's so huge and has so many ways to... **** it's all full of water.
Current:
-Oh, you want a plain? Here, have this exaggerated plane with absolutely nothing but ****ing grass.
-Damn it! I spawned on a natural Survival Island. Better go find the mainland. *5 hours later* come on, the mainland has got to be around here somewhere.
-New swamps! Buy one today and get free hard-coded, jagged-edged, nuclear waste dump biome coloring!
I think there should be trees in plains, mountains that have trees and snow on them, etc. but I also don't think it should be completely random desert mountains with both snow and waterfalls on top.
There's my 2 cents.

My Website. I make mods for Minecraft and am also making my own game.
I agree. In my 1.7.3 world, I lived on a beach in a rainforest next to a mountain with trees and a natural waterfall that flowed into a shallow pool. It was beautiful and I loved it.
I haven't found anywhere near as awesome or varied and normal as that.
My least favorite things are the lack of trees on mountains and so much water in deserts. I *love* ravines though. Those are great.
I think any kind of hill is annoying for building or traveling but deserts used to be more interesting when they were lumpy and all I seem to run into is a tree infestation or a cattle grazing plain.
The colors do seem a bit less vibrant than before....but to call it boring? i dunno...my current map i play with my friends says otherwise. Maybe you're getting bad luck on the land generation OP?

Aren't those called hills? :P

What are you guys using?
yeah, everyone has that. that's the problem.
MiniM00se, glad to see we still agree with each other on things. (If you do remember me from before)
And yes, the main problem here is that everything is repetitive.
