I agree. Minecraft is lacking in the random terrain features. In pre Adventure update worlds, I would love setting out and seeing what I could find. It was always a sense of exploration around the next bend in your adventure, because I might find this awesome tabletop plateau in the middle of a plain that I wanted to build my castle on, or a giant valley that I wanted to make a factory out of, or these tree-topped, mysterious mountains.
Minecraft needs this random terrain generation back instead of terrain generation within restrictive parameters. The landscape was undeniably cooler. I don't want rid of biomes completely but just make them based on foliage and color, not heightmaps. I want an extreme hills swamp biome, or a plains snow biome, with random mountains outcropping from them.
Also, I wish the terrain generator made terrain that was like the custom map Eldaria V3 more. The variation of height and water is awesome. In fact, it is not very often I find lakes high above sea level any more, and no I am not talking about the little puddles you find occasionally.
Also, I wish there was some variation in average surface height between areas of the map, instead of everything always centering on sea level. For instance why can't the terraingen make a deep and wide valley that is 30 blocks lower than the surrounding terrain, or perhaps an abrupt cliff that, when scaled, expands into a grand savanna that is 40 blocks on average higher than the other terrain?
Everything always averages out to the sea level.
TLDR: I agree, make height variation more random and less forced, as well as with bigger and smaller sizes of affected area
Well, the letter is finally public. Annnnnnddddd I'm not gonna read it. We might as well ask a moderator to shut down the thread. Chaos is still in that whale and it looks like every ounce of hope we had of getting legitly in touch with Mojang for our ideas on improving the terrain is lost. Just except the fact.

Reading the letter it is no wonder why mojang never replied. All throughout alongside biased pictures were subjective opinions and remarks to mojang some might find hurtful.
I agree with this. I agree with most of the ideas of this thread, but the way that the letter was phrased was too much like a suggestion thread and not enough like a letter to the developers. Excessive use of "should" and "better" instead of "we suggest" and "we prefer" is rather annoying, considering who it was sent to. It feels like the players are trying to boss the developers around, and at this stage in the game, it's really not possible, and a little rude.
Or, I guess it's possible the letter never made it there, and was lost in a post office somewhere.
The letter makes the whole thread seem like pointless nitpicking. I don't think the pictures are biased at all. On the contrary, many of the comparisons look pretty much the same to me.
It's not that it's not strongly stated, but the whole thing seems to fall flat.
I'm not saying the letter isn't well written (it is) or that that's the only issue (it isn't), but it's what sticks out to me.
There are rumors on Mindcrack of something coming. Specifically, they plan to reset the map after the next major terrain update, and they seem to be expecting one. Why would they know something? Well, this group knows Mojang. Dinnerbone is a fan, they chaired a minecon panel, and were granted the MC2.0 April Fools joke because they know how to keep secrets.

I would really like to believe this is real, but can I have a source first?

Mindcrack are pretty in the know about updates and such, if they ask for something it will likely be thought about. They can instantly contact a Mojang employee, for example Dinnerbone went on the Hermitcraft server to help Xisuma fix a glitch in his redstone. They were in on the april fools 2.0 update, a sign that Dinnerbone communicates with them. Maybe Dinnerbone has plans for a terrain update and has told Mindcrack in advance so that they can prepare? Who knows.. I guess time will tell. I hope we get a terrain update and not the suggested 'Add biomes! IT WILL MAKE IT FUN AGAIN!'
By "source", I meant a specific quote or video in which this was mentioned. I know about Mojang's relations to Mindcrack.
Of course, if there is going to be a major terrain update we can only hope it's not just going to be more biomes and sub-biomes.

I haven't heard that detail. As far as I've heard it might only be new biomes. And DB's sliders
I think Dinnerbone knows better than to just add biomes. Anyways, I don't have the time or will to go looking for a quote in one of the hundreds of Mindcrack videos, but I remember them talking about a new map. I don't know if this will happen, its likely though because their map is from 1.8.
Yeah, I doubt Dinnerbone would just add biomes and call it a day. After all, even his original solution wasn't just adding biomes.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
U serious?
I mean how hard can it be to find a Nether Fortress?
I spent hours and hours for it!
Ok.the beaches were better but the new high limit is good!
Minecraft has his pro and cons in the newer versions but thats okay...
its not a perfect game
no game is.
How are fortresses and height limit related to this thread?
I think I started playing Minecraft a little before the 1.7.3 beta, and the epic terrain was how I got hooked. From there I started learning about the rest of Minecraft but seeing epic mountains covered in snow, trees, sand, some having lakes on top of them. I do have to say I like some of the new content that has been added like trading with NPCs and enchanting and all that stuff but I would rather have the old terrain generator. Might go find a 1.7.3 Beta jar file and relive the past xD

I went on the mc forums home page and right there...
"1.6 Terrain improvement snapshot"
"added mountains to every biome"
I was so happy. I went to this thread and everyone was celebrating.
Then I woke up and was sad when i found out the terrain wasn't fixed.

...
The terrain generator doesn't use the new height limit.
And that's literally your only argument.
The terrain generation algorithm is restricted by the height limit.
