I was just looking and the beach was the one that caught my eye. I actually NEVER saw the difference, and I really liked, heck, ENJOYED the extra sand for glass! But jeez, now I notice it, I'm like "Jesus friggin' christ..."
Also, i was thinking of maybe making a "Time Machine" LP, like starting in an older version and coming till now, my plan is to go from Secret Friday 1 to beta 1.7, still thinking of it.
* Should I mention mountain peaks stuck at same heights in Extreme Hills, Desert Hills and Ice Mountains, since that's very noticable there (though forced height applies to every biome)?
* Should I mention ugly taiga-jungle transition? (discussed in PM, but led to nothing, so asking here)
It might be worth it to mention the forced height in the hills biomes, although I don't think the peaks are always at the same height. As for the transitions, I don't think specifics really need to be mentioned. As long as transitions are mentioned (maybe with a screenshot or two to prove the point), this should be fine.
You know, it really bums me out to think of how much effort has been put into this thread and for it to be disregarded as jabbering by Mojang. All the evidence, good points made, and just by looking at the letters you can see how much the community really cares about this. This is a very real issue, and it needs to addressed; you guys keep at it, and the letter, this thread is too awesome to give up on

What annoys me the most is the fact the the terrain is pretty much what makes up the entire game, and yet they've ignored it for so long.
EDIT: Posts don't bind together when you post right below yours anymore? Darn it, what happened to that.
I'm a bit dissapointed about the structures that mojang have implemented. desert pyramids are tiny and are far to easy to loot. If I were to make them, they would be larger and I would have mummies that awaken when you loot the chests. Jungle temples were challenging the very first time, but afterwards you know where the tripwires making it easy to avoid the dispensers.
And then there are witches huts. I was expecting more of a mage tower type thing but I got a cr@p shack instead

It most certainly has not been ignored. Dinnerbone has directly replied to this thread as far as I know. I don't think I have ever seen that in any other game community other than when Notch read that suggestion website.

I have seen developers more involved in the community than this, but only twice. Those games were also much much smaller and not as well known, so we are indeed lucky that we have (some) communication on the subject with Dinnerbone.
Also, since I couldn't stand the current terrain but I wanted to play survival, I decided to start up a game with BWG. Better than nothing, I suppose. It doesn't fulfill what we want, but it takes out some of the ugliness. Was Exalm's terrain fix ever updated for 1.4.5? I remember some discussion on it in the PMs but I don't remember anything about it beyond that.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Your complaints are valid. I can see why you want improvements. But writing a letter? Asking at MineCon? You are PESTERING THEM. They have other things to get to that was promised at some point before they'll fix the generation of the terrain.
Don't get me wrong. I agree with you completely, but good things come to those who wait. You may say "We've waited too long!", to which I would say...
"Minecraft hasn't even existed for five years."
Patience is the key here, guys. Who knows; maybe 1.6 will be called the "Overworld Update" (for lack of a better name idea). And if it is, I'll be cheering with everyone else.
You're free to do what you think is necessary, but IDK if it's a good idea.

Im with you. Dinnerbone basically said: Look, give us time, we are working on terrain to let us make it better and its a step by step process. After all of that is finished and there is no radical change i would send the letter
Browsing this topic I felt the urge of reinstalling beta 1.7.3 and generating a new world. Jesus Christ, I nostalgia'd so hard looking at that unpredictable, ever changing terrain (I didn't miss the lag and poor lightning, though).
What I miss even more is the use of biome graphs to make complex transitions between biomes or even inside them. I worked really hard on my texture pack to make nice transitions but when beta 1.8 was released I had to toss everything in the toilet. Check the following pics to see the differences: the top one is a beta 1.7.3 world as seen with my pack, the bottom one is the same world rendered in latest release (1.4.5).

But to have the mountain biomes like that...
The seed is: 1579064037
That is HORRIBLE BLLRRGGGHHHH!!!

Cannot unsee.. It's so ugly.

We don't want the 1.7.3 world generator.

Anyways, yeah, the terrain before WAS a bit better, but I'll never hate the mountain biomes of today.
I'd like it if the brang back the old generator until they made a new even better one.

Transitions are gone.
I miss those colors so much it almost hurts.
