Not every thing is fixed by the new snapshot. Though it goes the good way, to my opinion. And some new flaws are coming with this terrain generation.
-Beaches are wrong, they go to high, globaly too much sand.
-Too much snow, there should be snow less tundra forest, meaning not every tundra forest should be covered with snow, or else, this biome should be disociated with the forest biome.
-The swamps still need to be worked on.
-Still lacks trees, and the uniqueness of a given seed is not back. they still all feel the same.
Let's hope Jebs update brings back the pre1.8 landscapes.
It was sooooo sweet exploring and mapping in 1.7.3 for me. And I also miss spawning on the sand beaches. It did make it feel like our little Steves were shipwrecked or something.
I HIGHLY support this thread!!!!! I feel like Minecraft is loosing a major thing that makes the game great....it's landscape. After 1.8 Minecraft's landscape became boring...no more world's like glacier or gargamel..now every world looks practically the same.
It's so hard not to leave the game because of something so simple like world generation, but that's what got me hooked on the game all that time ago...now it's gone.

Dude, that is exactly how I feel. O_O Man, when I played minecraft I used to take the terrain gen for granted, and then in 1.8 I feel like the game really lost something precious. I think Jeb is trying to re-add the elements of the old terrain gen though, and most likely the only reason they changed to the new one was so that they could add new biomes like swamps. They need to stop leaving things so unfinished (like NPC villagers) because it angers alot of people, but I think the terrain gen will be awesome in the next update because they're making it more interesting; they've already done that in this week's snapshot :biggrin.gif:
I think the terrain generation is heading in a good direction again. I'm glad it's finally getting looked at again, at least (although I'm getting really sick of regenerating maps in practically every new update because of these changes).
I'm sad at how disappointing the 1.8/1.0 terrains have been. I remember being super hyped back in 1.7 because biomes were going to be bigger and more distinctive (because that was the only problem I did have with the old generation code). But then when it finally come out it took maybe a week to realized "no... no this isn't what I wanted."
As far as the underwater 'patches' of land, I like that clay is way more easier to get, and I always want more sand, but I do agree that it looks fugly as hell. Maybe instead Jeb should code it so that the materials are in wider chunks so the ocean floor isn't as much of a splotchy mess?
I might be the screwball of the group, but I kinda like the ocean biomes a bit
granted that yeah, early on they're a pain in the ass, but I've got a thing for building underwater sealabs and building huge tower systems, so with some reeds and cobblestone, I can put together some elaborate underwater mine systems.
in agreement with the swamps, I keep getting them next to my starting zones and I watch countless boats getting blown up by lily pads of all things :/

Do you know if they are going to tweak or add even more to it?

I'm not decided on the ocean biomes, yet, but I am currently living near what looks like a realistic long lake or superwide river. Whether this is caused by the ocean biome, I don't know. I just know I like being able to travel quickly down this thing without having to wind around and crash into corners like I do on the usual creeks that are supposed to be called rivers. It strengthens the travel aspect of the game, and I can go far from my house to harvest resources more often. So with oceans, I guess I'm leaning towards the positive. I'm just afraid of spawning in a seed like the famous 292202.
I think swamps are a useful biome and would be much improved if they simply did not have to transition their water colour. Give swamps the same colour water as everywhere else. Why not? You still have shallows and lily pads to make them distinct. Perhaps change the colour of the soil under the water, or make it all dirt or all clay (currently it's a mix of clay and sand).
The problem I have had is always spawning in the same biome surrounded by exactly the same biomes in the same directions from one another. I always spawn in a snowless taiga. There are mountains in the distance behind me. In front of me is a river - if I follow the river left, I get to a swamp; and if I follow the river right, a desert. Behind the desert is a plain. My map is always the same.
Recently, I got frustrated and keyed in a fifty-two character seed with spaces and a comma. Okay, it's a teeny bit different. I'm closer to the mountains, and instead of a taiga it's a regular forest. But when I take my boat ride that I have already mentioned, I get to a place that looks suspiciously like what I normally spawn in. Anywho, here is my seed: "at the hundredth meridian, where the great plains begin" without quotes. I had to hike a bit to get to where I'm living.
Why in the world doesn't the taiga have snow any more?
I don't think it's completely boring, but I think that Jeb should just re-add the old biomes. The new ones are nice in some ways, but there isn't as much variety. I say, keep these, but also add the old ones back.
And yes, I somewhat agree with your point about height variants in other biomes. The funny thing is that all the cool, spectacular landscape has been moved underground. With the addition of mine shafts, strongholds and ravines the creepy narrow caves have new life to them. In fact, I often find several large round rooms that could easily fit a house.
Then how about "hun"? I'm sure that isn't as offensive.

I completely agree. I have gotten used to the new biomes and all, but it really is too generic. I'm happy that Jeb has finally done something in response to all the rage against the new terrain, but worlds still won't be as diverse as they once were.
I didn't really have an opinion on this until I went and looked at my 1.6/1.7 map. The land was definitely more varied and exciting compared to my current map. Would like to see more variance in height and biome mixtures.
You forgot something that I don't really like too: (If you think it need to be changed) every dungeon is now connected to a mineshaft, there is no dungeons only connected to a cave now :sad.gif:

Not letting this thread die.

compared to 1.0 or the latest snapshot?
it seems to me like you guys are going by 'false' nostalgia rather than actual 'something'
