The mod is on front page of mod forum atm, and IF YOU DO 256 its not any more laggy than 128.
None at all. Now if you go crazy and try 2024 then you'll lag crazy, but 256 is no more laggy than 128.
It is possible to do it for servers AT THE START of the server, with a bukkit plugin.
Also, it does amazing things for EVERY biome, not just mountain areas.
Deserts become more hilly sometimes, not always. Massive sand dunes and sand mountains appear, like pre-1.8
Its pretty fun, and I love playing at 256. Caves are also much longer, but no bigger. Very realistic.
I just want to point out to some people, even the ones who voted "yes", that if notch put in plains in the game to be plains, there should be plains. Plains are cool because it's nice to find a big flat area with no landscape disturbances once in a while (in my opinion), but notch put in snow biomes, deserts, and etc that look like plains just with some retexturing. One of the main arguments we have here is that too much of the terrain is flat. People wanted bigger plains for a while (bigger biomes in general) and it leaked into biomes that didn't need to be flatter.

If you are talking about the simple mod that just bumps up the internal height variable from 128 to 256, 512, etc, I tried that mod, set to 256, and it was laggy and unstable for me. When I tried it, in my opinion, it didn't do amazing things "for every biome". It just magnified all of the heights of the biomes -- I did end up with hillier biomes, but again, outside of the mountain biome, they were all equally hilly -- no height variation at all. And the magnification to the mountain biomes made them almost unusable outside of the valleys and canyons between the mountains. Ideally, I would like to see sensible height variation between all of the various biomes, not just between the mountain biome and everything else. As the OP pointed out, it makes sense to have the plains biome, for example, remain at the relative flatness that it is right now. In my opinion, the swamp biome should also be a relatively flat biome. That height-adjustment mod is not capable of doing that.
Well, calling the person you are talking to "kiddo" is kind of a dumb thing to do. Not reading the thread and therefore not understanding*, what people are having an issue with isnt smart either. If you want your opinion to be respected, that is. But hey, its not my problem when you put yourself in a negative light by saying dumb things. So have fun...
/discussion with you
*which is evident by this "My latest world has a nice mountain range near the spawn and there are several mountains that dot the landscape around the spawn. I'll admit that I miss seeing those sand mountains but other then that I've had some pretty extraordinary seeds but I've had a few that were a little lack-luster. So try again. You'll get lucky. " Its not about there being "nice mountain ranges" or not. Its about lack of variety in the terrain. Also this wont change with any seed, since the current worldgen is not able to create this variety. Understand now?
It is just my person, hun. If I call you "hun" will it make you feel better? I read the first page but I'll admit reading 17 pages of one-liners and single paragraphs would be quick but dull. You did misread what I said though. Come now, I have been very satisfied with the results of my seeds. I should have specified that mountain ranges are more frequent, at least in my opinion, to make up for the relatively flat land. It still causes the landscape to vary and prevents the entire area from becoming flat. Of course I have had some seeds where they were generally flat centered around a forest and a desert combo. It is just my personal preference. You may not like my personal preference, but I rather enjoy the numerous seeds that I play Minecraft 1.0 on. That's my two cents and before you complain about that again, hun, I would like to remind you that I wanted to post my thoughts on the subject. You're over-analyzing everything I'm saying hun which is where all these sour feelings are coming from.

If you had even glanced through the thread, instead of skipping over the pages, you will have noticed that we continue to get people ignoring what this thread is about -- their post is usually questioning the discussion, pointing out how interesting the mountains are in their <insert seed here> map, and that we just need to try more seeds until we find an interesting one. They completely ignore the fact that this thread is less about how interesting or random or tall the mountain biomes can be, and more about how dull and repetitive all of the other biomes are. Their continued use of mountain biomes as examples of what is "interesting" about their seeds just reinforces my opinion that something is really wrong with the terrain generator.
And no offense, but calling people "kiddo" can easily be construed as talking down to them, and will result in nothing but more and more forum users responding negatively to your posts.

Yeah, I moved to a mountain biome just because of that. The mountain biome has the only interest to offer. I dislike when people used to give seeds that gave mountains like that though where you have large mountain arches with water underneath etc.
What I actually like is lumps in regular terrain, that's what I miss. The 'majestic' mountain random clusterphukk was never interesting to me but for now that's the only thing interesting in the terrain.
People also say, "The new generator makes it easier to build with all the flat space." I like having to dig out areas just to construct, everything being flat makes it too easy.

Very good point sunperp. First off I want to say that everyone's opinion should be respected here. You should debate, but don't go crazy.
Yeah... people, we realize that there are somewhat interesting mountains in the lone mountain biome, but that's not the point of this thread. We're summarizing the blandness and repetitiveness of all the terrain in every seed. Every time you enter a mountain biome you will come closer to realization that they are just as boring as everything else. Repetitive, the same, and naked. I liked the simplicity of Minecraft before, but the terrain seems way too simple now.
Sure you could say I'm just bored of Minecraft. That's what happens when someone plays consecutively for a couple of months. I played 1.8 for a few days, which was hardly a week, once it hit our clients and thought "Hey this is cool... sort of. Seems incomplete though." So, I took a break for at least 3 months (or until 1.0 hit). I started playing again and was like "YEAH IM PLAYING ****ING MINECRAFT HOLY **** IM BACK." (seriously, this is what I said) After a few days, I noticed something was missing that Notch promised us. A reason to go adventuring. After seeing the same terrain over and over again, I just decided to stay in one small area. What's the point of exploring when there's nothing to explore?

And yes, I somewhat agree with your point about height variants in other biomes. The funny thing is that all the cool, spectacular landscape has been moved underground. With the addition of mine shafts, strongholds and ravines the creepy narrow caves have new life to them. In fact, I often find several large round rooms that could easily fit a house.
Then how about "hun"? I'm sure that isn't as offensive.
Don't you know that all mountains IRL have no snow, no trees and all have a dull grey-green grass colour? And that all forests are flat with an occasional hill and it only snows on plains and in pine forests (certainly not birch or oak forests, that's for sure!). There sure as hell isn't such a place as the Appalachian Mountains (can't be - they must be made up since they have forests all over them!) or the Alps (they have snow on them!).
Also, don't you understand that in a game which rose in popularity when generated flying islands and impossible landscapes were the norm; a game where skeletons attack you, creepers explode, water is infinite and gravity does not affect most blocks; in a game like that, we absolutely must strive for as much realism as possible.
As for the person that insists on saying that there was less variation in terrain in 1.7.3, can you please point out to me where the snow capped mountains, forested mountains, snowy/forested mountains and beaches are in 1.0.0 (not to mention the variations of these - like mountains that have a grass colour other than zombie flesh)? Because I can point out plains, deserts, oceans (can't believe they're counted as a biome in 1.0.0, but not in 1.7.3), mountains, hills and marshlands (all - except deserts - with and without forests and/or snow) in 1.7.3. I can point them out in 1.0.0, but only the slightly hilly areas have forests and snow. The only new thing is the mushroom biome, which is very rare (and frankly, boring/ugly). Swamps aren't really new, they've just had vines added to them and the colour has been made hideous (along with the transitions).
And for everyone who insists that Minecraft should be more flat to facilitate building - download the blank, flat map! Or, explore for all of a few minutes (yes, even in 1.7.3) and find a flat area. If 1.7.3 had big biomes like 1.0.0, it would have huge flat areas for you - that's really the only change that was needed for 1.7.3 terrain gen.
As I've said before - I like areas with mountains, snow and pine trees. However, I don't come on here demanding that the whole map generation be mountainous, snowy pine forests - I act like a human being and ask for variety, so that everyone gets what they want. Not sure why people think that everything that they don't want should be removed from the game :huh.gif:
Say again please? I don't understand what you plan to achieve by your sarcasm, but you seem to fail to see the point. The lack of variety exists in the mountain biome that we currently have. The mountains in the previous terrain generator was never meant to be realistic, but it did give a sort of variety that everyone loved and appreciated.
Understand that in this case, that the previous "realistic" terrain was far more interesting and unique in terms of generation than the terrain gen we have now. And have you not played Beta 1.7.3? The terrain wasn't entirely mountainous; that would be ridiculous! It's sort of terrain that we used have then that we want, not a world that's one big mountain range.
But would you really sacrifice variety and the unique topographical features of the old mountain gen, just for the fact that Minecraft is not a realistic game? In this case, I and many others would rather have the old mountains. You don't seem to get it but we are asking for variety too, in this case, with the mountainous terrain!
yeah the new biomes suck i mean A MUSHROOM BIOME???? what the heck is mycelium
and whats the point of worlds with too much ocean? its not like you can explore the oceans or discover the wildlife
i want to go back to when mountains were ridiculously high
They should double world height, that would be fun too, but then again there would be double lag. Wait I have an idea, the world will load in half-chunks then!

Sorry, I often get so damn frustrated by people using completely baseless arguments that I resort to sarcasm. The problem is that the sarcasm I use tends to just be their arguments, but slightly exaggerated. To me, it's amusing because what they say makes no bloody sense - to others, I probably seem like an insane person who changes their opinion every other page.
In short; I'm on your side - it's just that my sarcasm is a little...off.

Ah, I see now. Well, my apologies then for the misunderstanding. I sometimes find it difficult to ascertain whether or not a person is being sarcastic or not, being that I only have text to go on. It's alright though, I'm just happy that you also agree that the terrain needs some fixing.
I miss the mountainous generation of the good ol' ALPHA days. They had huge canyons, awesome caves, good tree density and awesome flatlands. Now we have ugly swamps, flat boring land. There is really no reason to explore after these "adventure" updates. But the new generation is "good" for some thing I will admit, like having biomes not suddenly changing without warning and I do like the huge oceans.. but right now they are just boring. there are no mobs or minerals or anything in the ocean that you cannot find on land so they just become an annoying obstacle.

Sometimes, using something like a at the end of a satirical paragraph does actually help people to understand that it wasn't serious.
