The list of minor terrain issues is finished, sorry about the delay. As with the list of major issues, I will need some feedback to know what I should change, what I should remove, and what I should add in. These are mostly issues brought up after this topic was made, so I'm sure I missed plenty of them.
Minor terrain issues:
Ocean biomes are much larger than they should be, and some can take up thousands of blocks.
Snow biomes are incredibly common
Biome placement seems way too random
Rivers and beaches have their own biome colors, making them not blend with other biomes well. (This is an issue that i brought up, not sure if anyone else sees this as an issue.)
Solutions:
As long as oceans are given more content, they should remain large, but should still be about a fourth of the size they are now.
Tundra biomes can stay the same rarity they are now, taiga biomes should be as common as tundras.
Two possible solutions. Either biomes could generate by temperature again but the different temperatures would take up larger areas so biomes remain the same size (not sure if this would work), or some of the more "extreme biomes", like jungles, deserts, and swamps could generate less often, and the old seasonal forests, savannas, and swamplands could generate in their place since they blend well with the other biomes.
Rivers and beaches should use the same biome colors as the biome they generate in.(Again, this is something I brought up, so I'm not sure if this one needs to be fixed.)
I'd recommend people to just downgrade, if they dislike the current terrain. I'm not sure if it will make any difference, but the complaints are clearly being ignored, and it's less people supporting the current version. You can even downgrade your server's too.
Downgrading like that just because of the world generator is not worth losing half of the game content.

It's better to use mods then. But it's not solution too, as good terrain should be in default game. And I can understand if it always was bad, but it was actualllly better than now, so it's not hard to improve it.

Is anybody actually working on this/improving the biomes? I last played and set up a server for my friend and I about a year ago. We decided to look back into it and I was setting up a more complex, more fun server with many more mods. I didn't log in until I had ExtraBiomesXL installed.
Once I finally logged in, I enjoyed the different biomes and terrain unlike a year ago (was easily sub-1.8 back then), but I REALLY dislike the way the biomes comes together. It's very unnatural and looks like crap on both the map and from character view, on top of being "too busy" most of the time. I really don't know if I can use ExtraBiomesXL now...but I'm curious as to how many people in here are using it?
Is anybody talking/planning to work on the biomes within the natural, unmodded game?
That map is a whole craftable map's size of 1.7.3 terrain if anyone wants to just wander around in it. Biomes like swamps made it through, but the mountains are amazing.
I agree with you so much! When I first got Minecraft (1.7 I believe) exploring was awesome. Everywhere there were awesome mountains to explore, and caves (I'm not sure about this) seemed to have more caverns. Now look what we've got: massive chasms that go nearly down to bedrock. To sum up my opinion, it's too easy to find "rare" stuff and there's no adventure in Minecraft.
Yes terrain has taken a turn for the worse but i think rivers could be made a lot more interesting, say if they added waterfalls that woud really liven up mountain biomes. Maybe to make a desert more interesting they could add new desert trees (palm). Maybe an oasis could spawn in a desert biome. Idk just suggestions. I think they should add ravines that are created by tectonic plates that stretch 200 blocks or so.Clearly The Adventure Update Made Things Less Fun.

I rather they not have mountains restricted to a certain or technical biome.
OMG. I can't believe I found this thread. I've been complaining about this to my friends and family (brother) ever since it changed. I really miss the old style beaches and the gravel ones too. Even though everyone always complains about gravel (me included), I miss the gravel beaches. Also I really think if the old style was reintegrated with the new jungles and such, terrain would be amazing again. Also if Notch doesn't want to scrap the new fancy fractal based (boring) terrain, he could add the old generators as a world type/mode (like superflat, large biomes, and then a new one - old-style, vintage, archived or beta, generator). Also SUPER IMPORTANT bring back the old grass colors. I don't want to see that DAMN GREY-GREEN GRASS anymore. Another suggestion would be to make the mountain grass light green or something, just not grey-green.
edit: i forgot to comment on the caves:
my thoughts on the caves are - indeed the swiss cheese is absolute ********.
It makes hollowing areas for mob systems a ridiculously annoying task (even though there are less blocks to mine), with all the caves that need to be blocked off. Also I don't appreciate the ENDLESS caves where you literally cannot conquer it and say "I DID IT!" You just sit there week after week going into the same damn place wondering how many years it will take to rid that cave of creepers.

Grass was same in Beta. Lime green grass was in Alpha before biome addition.

no, the grass is different from 1.7 and 1.8
in 1.8 everything is a bit duller (also this has to do with the new lighting system)
and in 1.8 they added the mountains which have super grey grass

Compare grasscolor.png and foliagecolor.png. They are same. The only darker biome is swamp, but in 1.8 it was bright too.
It's just because now more biomes have blue-green color, and in Beta there were less such colors (Though you could see it in Tundras sometimes), but much more orange-yellow ones instead.

Just because those files haven't changed doesn't mean grass ingame hasn't. The game now only selects some values from that image - much less than it did before, and the values used by some biomes could still have been changed. At any rate, grass definitely looks more vibrant in screenshots I've seen of older versions.

Again, you can see those colors in Beta.
Don't compare rainforest with EH, compare rainforest with jungle and EH with tundra.
It uses less colors, it's true. Beta used entire image, 1.8-1.1 used points for biomes, but all image for transitions (3-4 blocks wide :)) and now game uses only certain points.
But colors themselves are exactly same. Except swamp.
I don't think the current terrain is boring. But I do agree that they should allow mountains to spawn in other biome types on occasion, though I don't think there's any reason to remove the mountain-specific biome type. I also agree that cavern systems are a little too common and should be reduced in frequency somewhat.
Anybody here with a good voice and a good screen recorder able to make a video regarding this issue?
Well when I got up this morning I pulled the hard drive from my old computer and found an original beta 1.3.1 jar intact. I made a world and I explored a bit of the area then force updated to 1.2.5. I recorded the process. Its not goin to get any awards for editing and entertainment, but shows how the terrain wasn't so linear before. There is no narrative and the video can speak for itself.
Its around 14 min, first 10 is walking around "couldn't NBT edit into creative with the 1.3 jar" then a fly over of the biome edges and so forth after patching it to anvil 1.2.5.
I didn't see this post until a bit ago so yeah I thought the same thing, pictures don't really replace the experience, still waiting for upload to finish,,
Edit: Here is the video. Most of the shots of me flying by the boarders are in the last 1/4 of the video, the rest is the 1.3 before and after grass changes and terrian. The old grass color gave more of a bright crisp feeling to were the new seems a bit darker in contrast. The seed can be seen in the video or just use "Tropico". In 1.2.5 it will spawn you on a ice mountian, with a few nice coves and overhangs.
