Maybe it's because I'm not that much of a fusspot, or maybe I'm absolutely in love with jungles - but I think there's plenty enough variety to keep me interested in the biomes. And if I can't find a biome to suit, I'll just simply convert it - planting new trees, spreading fungus, so on and so forth...
For a sandbox game, a lot of people here sure are being quite narrow-minded about the challenges presented.
The terrain was and is not challenging. If you think about it, the previous generator made things more challenging than they are now. Bumpy hills to trek, you couldn't always sprint if you were on the past generator, and caves didn't always turn into endless complexes. You actually had to EXPLORE to find what you wanted, something you don't have to do in the current generator because every area is the same. The only thing that's drastically different are jungles and extreme hills. But you always know in the extreme hills biome, you'll have mountains spammed in your face in one area and nowhere else.
I just downgraded to Beta 1.7.3, and I'm amazed how much better the game feels just due to the terrain (subjective opinion of course). I'm actually having the most fun I've had in Minecraft since, well Beta 1.7.3. I think I'll just stay on this version from now on.
yeh. i did the same. and.. the map just didnt stop giving, there was nothing on there that was boring, dissapointing or persistant. too bad none of the few good new things or mods arent on there though

_Bunch of Pictures Here_
Excellent screenshots. Now that's the terrain I'd like to see. Too bad you'll be missing out on the features 1.8+ delivered. I guess you're forced though... that terrain is definitely superior, but finding the right mod for this is hard because most if not all of the mods returning the terrain sometimes "overdo it" if you know what I mean. Like they have biome in which there are even more mountains spammed than the ones in the Extreme Hills biome and sometimes height variation can only be restricted to very high y-coordinates.
Proves how much the terrain influences the replay factor and how much it gives people inspiration.
Hey guys how you feel about the new snapshot, it seems to show that jeb is somewhat starting to step in the right direction, in terms of terrain...
With the larger biomes option? Like biomes aren't large enough. Anywho, biome size is not relevant to this thread (yet, I may consider because of the idea of biome size randomization). But if that's not what you're talking about please elaborate because I'm not updating because of the terrain mod I have. Until terrain is fixed, I'm staying where I am. So pics please.

To help prove this thread's point (few people said that those pictures were taken from extreme examples, filtered the bad ones out...etc), i just made a few shots of 5 different worlds which i newly generated, Random locations, relatively close (within 500 metres) to spawn point
Omg, looks like the current generator but improved!
I can't tell that I don't like world generator changes at all.The oceans, forests, jungles with ravines in them are awesome but I do missing that random abnormalities we had in the beta.
Like inland extended beach, gravel covers, bizarre rocks here and there with strange vegetation patches etc.
Does anyone here dislike the existence of the Extreme Hills biome, and rather have random height variation across most if not all biomes? This includes removing the Extreme Hills biome or possibly making it very rare after height variation returns.
@ChaosGuardian
I wouldnt mind extreme hills, if they werent the only 5+ blocks height (slight negative exaggeration) biomes.
What really grinds my gears is that we have 256 (!) heights now, yet the generator is still cannot make worlds higher than 128. Thats half of the available world height now!
Even worse, that you can only see that ~128 values at extreme hills. I would love to see plateaus, mesas, or to have a terrain where you are at a relatively flat surface, but you are surrounded by 'hueg like eksboks' mountains/cliffs.
Also: Starting at a level of ~60-70 most of the times also limits how the world can look. The sea level could be easily halved, or at least be around at 48ish level...
Well the only reason I'm considering it is because all of the mountains are spammed together. Like once you see this dull grass color, you know there's going to be a shitton of mountains ahead. In that case, it's just expected terrain, not like "WHOA, WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?!"
Again the question for people who haven't seen was: Does anyone here dislike the existence of the Extreme Hills biome, and rather have random height variation across most if not all biomes? This includes removing the Extreme Hills biome or possibly making it very rare after height variation returns.

This. I honestly believe we'll never see the same variety and randomness of Pre-Beta 1.8 generated terrain unless height variation is returned to all biome types.

Personally I can't say i dislike the existence of Extreme Hills biome, mainly because it's the only mountanious region we have right now but, as you say, I would rather see this biome gone and have random height variation across most biomes except for the plains biomes. This is because plains are supposed to be like that and having mountains across them would mess with the villages generation.

Apperently larger mountains spawn outside the extreme hills, i don't really know if this is true but like i said he's somewhat making a step
Not that i'm saying the terrain is still improved its just a step, if i knew how to downgrade or use a mod to improve biomes i would just for the terrain

Plains are uasualy valleys so a mountain range surrounding a plain would be nice, also villages can spawn on Tundra and Deserts too

Ill believe it when i see it.
A good, interesting formation in the new gen is just as common as a boring dull land in 1.7

That is how "extreme hills" should look.
