The next version is not 1.9. The 1.9.x numbering system was used to number the pre-releases for the full game release. The full game release is numbered 1.0.0. New updates past the full release appear to be labelled even more strangely...
Mojang / Notch are a bit unconventional in the way they approach versions of software.
It's more traditional for pre 1.0 alpha/beta versions to get numbers like 0.xx (for example, say.. 0.91beta or something). The idea being they are building towards the final 1.0.
But he started at 1.0 with alpha, and again with beta, and again with release.
Ignore whatever numbers he used before 1.0. They don't actually mean anything.
We are now on version 1.0.
The next version is 1.9.
Is this correct. Wtf what?
I'm new to Minecraft so I dunno.
Also for those who know, optifin doesn't work for 1.0 yet right? But there is a 1.8 and 1.9PR version? I'm confused.
beta 1.8
beta 1.9 pre release 1-5
full version 1.0
Yeah, it's confusing.
1.8 --> 1.0
When Beta ended, 1.9 didn't exist.
So in essence, 1.0 = 1.9.
Optifine isn't out for 1.0.
1.8
1.9 Pres
1.0.0
(not 1.0) but 1.0.0
See!

Then 1.9 Pre releases...
Then they skiped 1.9 and relased 1.0.0.
Then next will be 1.0.1
Optifine has not yet been released for 1.0.0 but is has been released for 1.8 and 1.9 pre...
Then went through Beta 1.0
We are now in Full-Release 1.0
