People often complain that companies don't care enough about their fans, and that they don't listen to the requests of the community. Even here in the vast minecraft community, Notch get criticised for not listening enough.
But to be honest, I actually hate the idea that the features people whine about the most get implemented into the game.
Sure I'm for community requests at some extent, however, if the product slowly start to become a product of the fans, rather than the creators, it turns into crap.
Why?
What I like in games, is to be completely overwhelmed by awesome ideas which I never would have thought of myself. If you let the creators do their work, you will see that happen more often.
Demanding your own features would be the same as demanding your Christmas presents. We all know that a successful present is something that you didn't know you wanted. You get both the excitement and the fun. So I have realised I prefer games that surprises me with nice features.
Another argument of why developers should listen less to the community: Features that get the most attention is features that every one shouts out loud, and such features are often obvious and shallow.
All ambitious ideas people come up with, never overpowers the crowd screaming MORE BIOMES, MORE FOOD, MORE MORE MORE... Those are not even ideas, they are lack of imagination, in which genius ideas drown.
That is why the community should not design a game.
In my opinion Notch just try to keep the game as he wants it, ignoring too obvious requests, and should not be blamed for not listening. And when a good request comes around, like pistons, it's added. That's a perfectly good balance.
Yeah, I agree. This goes for many many other things than Minecraft. Things are generally better if creators are allowed to follow their own visions and create works with depth and artistic unity rather than listening to demands of the unwashed masses.

Well, thanks! I guess I expected to face a little more disagreement, this being Internet and all. :wink.gif:
