I have always heard people refer to Minecraft Classic. But i wanna play it, and to find it, i have to know the name. The earliest version i played was Indev, i believe. So i wanna see what it was like before survival.
I tried the classic version, and i dug straight down out of boredom and i found coal ore and lava. What was that used for since there was no way to mine it or die?

Nothing. They were there for decoration. They were not given a use until Survival Test and later Indev. Lava does solidify into stone when it comes into contact with water, though.

FYI, between Classic and Indev was a version called Survival Test, and you can actually use it to play on Classic servers from what I heard.
