Strongholds are most common within like 1600 blocks of spawn in a circle. Abandoned Mineshafts are common.

Well i havnt found a single stronghold, but i dont dig much, just cut trees, dig through mountains, and make a home.

I'd say that they would be most common underground, but that's just an opinion
