I haven't read all of it, and yes, you are right about most parts, BUT Notch did state quite a while back (I think when it was still a WIP and called "cave" something or other that each block was 1m cubed and that the player stands 1.7 tall,
HD packs are of substiantially greater resolution than the standard pack but are in no way shape or form High Definition.
fixed
High-definition images/video or HD refers to any image/video of higher resolution than standard-definition (SD) , and most commonly involves display resolutions of 1,280×720 pixels (720p) or 1,920×1,080 pixels (1080i/1080p)
Were not talking about abstract values, HD is an industry standard we only ever call images or videos above 1280x720p High Definition.
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, I am in the industry.
HD means enchanced quality. Do HD packs enhance quality? So they are HD.
Get out.
HD means one thing and one thing only in regards to resolutions...High Definition which as I stated is an industry standard, if i take a 1px by 1px image and change it into a 5px by 5px ive enhanced its quality but it isnt HD.
I live mostly in caves and my wolves kept getting glitched and stuck in walls, then dying :sad.gif: I've kind of ignored them at this point. I keep them in a kennel area, and make them sit, and don't take them out of their runs.
I will admit I was mildly confused when first coming into the minecraft community that HD included resolutions like 32x32. However, there's really not many other ways to group them. It's a useful grouping- if you're working with a higher res, you need a mod to deal with it. If you're going by standard res, you don't. It's a way to quickly tell people if they'll need anything special to use a pack. But of course that's my opinion. I believe words are useful to the extent which they communicate things quickly among intended listeners/readers.
As far as the meters assumption: What is the most useful thing to do with measurements in minecraft? Usually, the most useful thing is to describe how the person can interact with it. We can jump half our height in the game. We can go through holes that are roughly our height and width of course, and our width is also half our height. Because people loathe fractions, we use whole units for these smaller measures, so 1 unit jump, 1 unit width, 2 units height. This happens to correspond to the average relationship between meters and our height. What this also does, for the people who really like to do sciency things in minecraft, is allow people to test if equations that describe the physical laws of our planet also describe those of the minecraft world. It turns out that with minor variations, some of them do. It's kind of nifty (for instance the parabolic nature of arrow flight and tnt cannon launches). Eventually people tire of using the unit block. *shrug* A unit is whatever everybody agrees upon. The tribe has spoken.

The "HD" texture packs are high detail compared to the standard 16x16 textures minecraft gives you, and HD texture packs look pretty damn stunning in my opinion. Also, the scale of a block being 1 metre cubed seems reasonable since its widly known and used (from what I know), but still, you could just use blocks instead of metres. And wolves... well, they are a start to helpful/allied npcs. Although they are quite dumb and tend to get themselves killed easily, they are great company while you are exploring dark caves or killing mobs in forests at night.
HD packs. HD = High Definition. Anything bigger than 16x is higher. Therefore, they're all HD packs. Also, 720P is 720p high. If you have a 128x pack, you would need only 6 blocks upwards on the screen at once to have more than HD resolution.
1m blocks is because of the scale of everything in the game. Steve's eyes are at 1.67 blocks above his toes. Most people are about 170-180cm tall. Trees are therefore 6-12m tall. It's 1m. As a result, a 32bit implemntation can result in values that would give a map roughly 8x bigger than the earth, however this is no longer true as 64big implementations are now possible
No.1 "HD Texture Packs" ...
hd starts at anything greater than 1280x720 (720p). Yes they look better and far more detailed than the 16px deafault texture, but theyre not HD >:L
Thats hd screen resolution, not texture resolution. 256x256 is pretty much hd textures.
industry standards... vary from industry to industry, no?
within the texture pack making "industry" in Minecraft, anything above the default 16x16 is considered a higher resolution/quality.... so HD
wolves? alone, they are quite useless. in packs? When roaming the scary night time plains, frankly, i dont give a damn, with half a dozen wolves behind me. (awful sentence structure to try fitting a cliche in there)
wether you use them for domesticated decoration, or battle, they can be...useful
In my opinion, the minecraft texture creating community has made their own definition of HD, to show a difference between 16x16 and anything of higher resolution. It has nothing to do with videos or images.
I think that 1 block = 1m3 is a perfect assumption, seeing that it makes the player and some other mobs about 1.8 meters tall. It is just a useful guess.
I agree with you about wolves being useless. However, to combat that, I use mods to make them more useful.
No.3 Wolves\ *snip* Also they attract a lot of shall we say "unusual" attention from a certian community (which i wont name but we all know) that well...like the wolves a little too much if you catch my drift *nudge, nudge, wink, wink* (But thats just my opponion and I whilst not agreeing with it , I resect thiers however unusual it is.)
completely forgot this part... really?
you honestly think that 1) mojang introduced wolves to please some furry element in his audience, or 2) that the furry element is like that?
what about pigs. they have been around for quite a long time. i really dont think there was a argument like this when they came about, though... try to contain your phobias xD
This is what Notch said making Cave Game, the original minecraft: "The tiles are 1 m^3. The player is 1.7 meters tall." Notch said his game is that scale, so it is that scale.
1. You don't have to use texture packs, or better yet complain about them
2. You don't have to use the forums, I would prefer you didn't
3. You don't have to use wolves, kill them if you find them annoying, I still like them as pets, not attack dogs, I can fend for myself

What exactly defines them as HD last time I checked "proper" hd starts at anything greater than 1280x720 (720p). Yes they look better and far more detailed than the 16px deafault texture, but theyre not HD >:L
HD stands for High Definition. it isn't some "standard" outside the realm of screen resolutions. 128x128 and higher are "High Definition" for a texture, simply because you aren't typically going to have the game texture map all the pixels of that texture. If it really bothers you, think of HD in this context as standing for Higher Definition textures.
"Minecraft is 8 times bigger than the earths surface." Where do I even begin... I beleive this assumes that 1 block is 1m^2. This annoys the hell out of me simply because minecarft is a game...it has no scale...therefore we cant assume 1 block = 1m^2, beacause there is no identifiable scale!!! Its like saying mario is the size of a jumbo jet because ive decided the blocks in that game are 100's of meters wide.
No. it's actually quite simple. First, Notch stated "each block is 1 meter cubed". second, each square being 1 meter squared isn't just some whimical idea made up out of nowhere. It stands to reason that your character might be average height for a rather tall person, or about 5/6 feet. this is consistent with the blocks being approximately 1 meter cubed. Additionally, it's a reasonable conclusion, which cannot be said of your ridiculous analogy regarding Mario.
Also they attract a lot of shall we say "unusual" attention from a certian community (which i wont name but we all know) that well...like the wolves a little too much if you catch my drift *nudge, nudge, wink, wink* (But thats just my opponion and I whilst not agreeing with it , I resect thiers however unusual it is.)
What the **** are you talking about? What does this have to do with... anything? Aside from proving your own ignorance on a set of people that you clearly have no idea about.
/rant over (please excuse the grammar/spelling its 2am im tired and a little grumpy }:I )
No.1 Compared to 16x textures, 256x is pretty HD. and 16x the terrain.png (Blocks) is 256x256 with 16x16 block. 256x HD makes the blocks the same size as the terrain.png. Pretty HD to Minecraft. If you don't like them, don't use them.
No.2 I'm sure somebody else said this, but I haven't looked threw the posts yet. As mentioned here, a block is one square meter.
No.3 Wolves are meant as helpers. Having one wolf isn't going to do much. Having 3-5 wolves however can do a lot of damage for you so you don't have to get hurt. They are meant to protect you not do the fighting for you.
Haha yeh true. Oh well at least since no one has question or pointed out anything on this... I shall summerise: HD packs arent HD.
FIN
About HD packs, does it really matter?
No I just find it annoying everything ive said wasnt worth posting i just wanted to vent my anger at some thing that had been bugging me.
