a: The best part of the game is the whimsical nature of the developers! Silly additions like the snow golem, to me, was like someone giving me a new toy to play with. I know many disagree but I do not understand the panic about it since , if you do not like them, DONT MAKE THEM!! Good NESS how easy is that? I know that people are Dying for a realistic survival/sandbox game, I am one of them. Minecraft Can and will be this once it is released and mods are made that supplement the realism and nix the silly stuff. Why complain and fight when the game is so VERY moddable. So I'm one of the Many who enjoy the developers whimsical ways with the game.
b: You have to understand that Notch, to some, is a hero. He worked for others , was ignored then said , screw this I'm gunna do it myself. People respect that and like all heroes, people will back him up no matter what he does or doesn't do. These people I do not see as a bad part of the community, I see them and say "gosh I'm glad I'm not like that but it's nice that people appreciate such a great guys ideas." It is hard but I think this is another group , that if they annoy you, it's best to just skip over em. No one is making you read their posts. :tongue.gif:
I, personally, love the whimsical nature of Mojang. On a level of taste, I simply think it's refreshing. I think Notch's story as a developer is astoundingly heroic, and that in the gaming industry, and as a person in general, he's a pretty awesome guy.
I just think that the guy has trouble managing his time, and although his quality control of what he wants in the game is inspiring in wake of so many plug-n'-chug features of the gaming industry... I think it gets a little old sometimes when issues as simple as HD texture support, which have LONG been fixed by the likes of MCPatcher, are still not officially in the game, even though adding them would be a matter of copy/paste into the .class files.
I think Mojang definately has its issues, despite being the only game company I still have respect for.
But hey, the guy has balls to challenge Bethesda to Quake III.
3: Let's Players
As the video guy here on the forums I would have to both agree and disagree with you on this point. I agree that too many people think that all it is , is press record and act like a idiot for 5 to 30 min and it's a let's play video that everyone wants to see. Or that since they can't think of anything to say, talking about how mom grounded them for picking their nose in church and how bogus that is, is interesting to anyone. Very few Let's plays are any fun to watch and it really takes a certain type of person to do it so that anyone can sit through the whole thing.
It is NOT totally the player's fault though. Please place some of the blame on YouTube. YouTube , by offering people money for certain amounts of subscribers, offering more upload time, and offering money for regular subscribers and views, has created the culture of Please subscribe, press the giant flashing annotation and subscribe, get me so-many-subscribers or I won't make another one, or get me so-many-subscribers or I won't make the tutorial! It is endlessly annoying and ruins most videos when this is done. But why WOULDENT they try when money is involved for Any age person making videos? If you were to find let's player videos that you liked you would notice that the very best of them, don't give a crap about subscribers and are doing it because they are having fun, experiencing sheer joy at playing the game!
There are a few, very few Let's players that are "diamonds" in the rough, you just have to find them :smile.gif:
I have a feeling if you do not give up yet , you will find a group of people that have the same views with, and enjoy the game as much as it , in my opinion, deserves to be enjoyed!

It's an interesting point you raise. I agree with it. I've begun to grow tired of what travesty Google did to YouTube, and I see it as being at least a joint issue in the Letsplayism.
Like Lineage II or EVE Online. Those games have hilarious stories about in-game scammers, ponzi schemes, epic guild-oppression, and massive player uprisings. Like the guy in EVE online who did a ponzi scheme for like 10k+ worth of REAL MONEY in EVE online credits, then got caught, so admitted to his wrongs, built a deathstar, put a bounty on his own head, and did a 360 degrees middle finger to the who world who couldn't kill him.
Damn right! What of it hater? No, but seriously... Minecraft doesn't have that bad of a community. It damn sure doesn't have the best but it doesn't have a bad one. If you only focus on the bad it's all you'll see. Just try to inform the annoying people and ignore the trolls.
/v/ can occasionally produce some good lolz too, but I wouldn't call it the ideal community. They were the guys who DDOS'd the Minecraft servers because they didn't get enough updates, after all.

You get to a point on the forums (and in life) when you realise that people just aren't as wise and well-rounded as you are, and have different or even stupid opinions.
You may get a little depressed by this epiphany because you cannot change their opinion, at least, not easily, and/or not through the medium of text. I think you have reached this point.
What happens next is that you either give up, or carry on, doing your best to accept this knowledge or at least deal with it in a non-destructive way (ie. punching your pillow for a few minutes after reading someone's suggestion that guns or some such should be in vanilla and they completly refuse to listen to reason).
It's a shame. But that's just the way it goes.

@angalex OH FFFFFF. I swear Rarity threw me off.
Yeah 4chan is a cesspool of a community but it does produce some good lulz. And yeah, ponies do that lol but I love my ponies.
Hahahahahahahaha yeah I feel ya on that one. My forum pic is my face at about 80% of the post I read on the forums. I usually have to take a breather before posting lol (or at least a proof read).
Pretty sure you can use all of those on any gaming community in existence, however I do tend to agree the white-knighters are much more prevalent here. I think that mostly just has to do with the age this game attracts to though, being a younger crowd than most I have played(never got into Runescape, stuck with Eve online and LoTRO). Lately I have been falling into that whiner category just because of Notch's rush on release, but I am backing off now. I can't do anything about it, besides **** some people off. That has just gotten old anymore though, much funner doing it to my ex-wife :biggrin.gif:.
You obviously are just playing with the wrong people. I have found a community of mature people who respect one another and don't just be morons. I do understand what you are saying though, this community as a whole is mostly kids under the age of 15. So, with that said, of course there are going to be childish actions and comments made, its something you either have to learn to deal with, or move on. I have teenage kids myself, and find they act at times just like some of the people on here, so I basically just ignore them and they will shape up real quick. It does not work like that on an online forum, but you get the idea.
I don't really like the grouping that you have. I have been playing since alpha 1.0.1 and I don't feel I fit into any of those groups. I hate the idea of another realm in Minecraft, I still don't see the point of the nether, BUT I'm not going to whine about it. Seriously, what is the point of bitching and moaning about something that you have zero control over? All it does is burn extra energy that you could be using somewhere else more productive.
I do though feel Notch is the man. He created a game that has basically revolutionized gaming and what people see gaming as. 5 years ago who would have ever thought a "legos-on-steroids" game would sell over 4 million copies? Does that make me a "White Knighter" as you call them?
Lol...I'm in a mood tonight, so yeah....
tl;dr : you play with wrong people, no use in bitching about it, Notch is almost God.
Well, I had a good post all written up, explaining my views, but it just got eaten by a 503 error.
So in summary, since I'm not typing it up again, I agree with the OP on every count. MinecraftForums has become a deep, dark pit full of whiners, trolls, dumbass memes, annoying videos, and morons who can never figure out where to put their server threads. Best you can do is try your damnedest to ignore all the crap, and keep weeding through the steaming piles until you find something worthy. The gems are in there somewhere...
Hold Up, let me say a little something... Owl, the community is pretty bad here at the forums.
I often found the opposite at PlanetMinecraft, I believe it's because it's a community of artists and mod makers. You don't see whiners there, it's because everyone there is trying to make Minecraft better in someway.
Whiners only show here just before updates or when updates are delayed for a week... they register only to whine... that is why the majority of whiners are low ranking titles.
White knights step forward due to all the bashing
Webcam whores need attention, rather than go to actual site where their work can be honestly rated. So it should be no shock they suck and people hate their videos, having no clue what they actually want to do in the vid. They ask others what they want to see on their show...
Unless you are a powerful personality like Tobuscus, the Yogscast, or Hatventure team... chances are you NEED a hook or gimmick to get people to watch.
The community needs downers like you, Owl. You present reality to us, and show us how the community is.
oh, it exists, loved a couple of games and their forums for a while before MC absorbed me.
examples of perfect community actions:
-competitive helpers, who can be first, and above all right?
-guide making. pretty much everybody gives it a shot, and quite frankly gems always appear.
-a lack of general whiners. (look at the forum, look here. look back. its on a horse)
You're true, most of the part. I don't care about Lets Players, they're pretty much doing things for fun (although it gets exaggerated, I know). Whiners are the one that annoys me the most. I really can't see why these people can't just 'live with it, play with it, ignore it'. I'm sure enough these guys are quite short-minded and doesn't want to think in long term.
Then again, it's a huge community. What would you expect, perfect peace?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I'm leaving the forum, if anyone cared. You can find me on OC or FFR.
You left out the pre-pubescent, just plain mean group of losers that haunt these forums.
The level of hate and venom I see (leveled for the slightest of "crimes") makes me sad.
Pity the poor newbie who hasn't learned that starting a thread to announce a discovery that's more than 2 hours old. You learn fast not to start any thread lest you go down in flames.
Please don't bother me with the "other forums/games are worse" response.
I've been on plenty of forums and played games with a much more mature, tolerant community.

I've never been to planetminecraft. I try it out. I'm growing very tired of this forum, because it's beginning to resemble other prime examples of ruinous communities. And I'll agree with your assessment of camwhores like Tobuscus. There are a few personalities who really pull it off. The problem I see is that everyone wants to be THAT GUY that everyone watches, despite them having the personality of a cardboard box. Some people are natural entertainers, others are the equivalent of a one-season Comedy Central show.
I just think that the guy has trouble managing his time, and although his quality control of what he wants in the game is inspiring in wake of so many plug-n'-chug features of the gaming industry... I +1 you because you said I was a chick even though I'm a guy. It made me lol.

I don't like Beta much. And, well, deal with it. I'm entitled to my own opinion.

This isn't one of them.
Whiners are bad too. I love most of the recent updates, but they need to find an excuse to complain. Dumb people.
