Hey all. I'm just gonna get it out of my system real quick: Minecraft is kinda losing its effect. On me, at least.
I started playing MC in around September of last year (so around the time of Alpha 1.1.0) and I LOVED IT. I would explore deep caves with my friends in multiplayer, slay monsters with relatively hard to acquire weapons, build epic castles/bases/outposts, and utilize glitches to make our lives easier. Those were the real days for me. I loved that old Minecraft. :smile.gif:
Beta rolled around, and I just thought it was amazing, the biomes, the everything, everything looked so much better, and I loved it, all the way up until around 1.6. For me, that's when Minecraft started to become less sandbox based, and start to submit to the more role-playing feel. Whilst I agree that Minecraft needed a bit of incentive, I think it would have been milking it to add any more features after 1.7-ish. 1.8, for me, was when I had decided that Minecraft had lost its effect completely on me.
For me, Minecraft used to be a sandbox-based adventure game where you could literally do anything. Now, it's a role-playing game. Experience and Hunger? What? That, to me, was the last straw - it was just too much. The abandoned villages/mineshafts/ruins/strongholds were really cool, yeah, but you could literally walk in and say "New base." and have it be complete with housing, forging, and even a complete farm. Even as an avid RPG and MC Survival player, I think 1.8 was pushing it for me. And it's only going to get worse as they continue to milk the game towards the RPG nuts out there, and eventually submit to mainstream gaming. (maybe that's taking it a little far... but that's my honest opinion).
Anyway, that's my honest opinion. Please don't cuss me out and tell me to downgrade, because I already have. I'm currently playing off Minecraft Alpha v. 1.2.3_01 (the update right before Beta). So let's not shoot my opinion down, I just want to know if there's anyone out there who agrees with me. :smile.gif:
TL;DR: Minecraft, to me at least, has lost its magic. It's way too RPG-oriented now.
yes i have noticed myself that minecraft has becoming less attractive and i'm stopping at 1.7_3.
yes i think i liked it better when it was a sandbox game.
and the hunger system sucks :dry.gif:
may i ask how you downgraded to alpha?
did you keep the bin and change it back?
Ill be honest, when i started playing this game like a month after it came out, it was the most amazing game i have ever played. Now after a year of playing it im gettin a little burnt out. I mean, he Notch hasnt added any new ores to make new weapons. There needs to be a bigger aspect, like NPC'S (which i know will come soon) to where you can trade and do quest's.
And I TOTALLY Agree I Feel The Same Now, But You Just Gotta Look Past Some Of That, And The Food Is Pushing You To Go Go Out And Explore And Get Food And Now Its Even MORE Sand-Box Based
While I love minecraft for the game it is, and it's sandboxy goodness, ultimately it sometimes get's boring.
I think that is why they made things like the adventure update.
I like it though. I don't think it's much like an rpg though, just gives more of a reward for exploration.
Like with the hunger system, it gives me a push and a thrive to make a farm, and to stock up on food and go kill some pigs oustide, and run around trying to catch them.
It's fun, for me.
But that's just my opinion.
Interesting.

Why hello there, you can call me Lukis =) Nice to meet you.
Well, I started playing Minecraft right after Beta 1.3 came out and I was a slow learner. As new surprise arrived for me I loved it and had so much fun. Then, I'd get really far into the game and then delete the world cuz I got bored. After a while I found out about mods and started using them. By 1.7 I was starting to get bored. I hardly played for a couple of months after that, and when 1.8 came out I loved it at first. But Minecraft was Minecraft anymore. I didn't like it. I agree with you for the most part but I think that it hasn't completely gone south. :tongue.gif: I still play but I do get bored more easily now, and now now I am even bored of mods.... *sigh*

I like the "world" in 1.8 a lot better, but I found myself enjoying the overall game more in 1.7.3. It was more... relaxing, I want to say. Does that make sense?
I still love Minecraft either way. Best game out there. <3
a agree with you, but i still love it for what it is.
and i think downgrading is sort of appalling, but if i did for any reason fell the need to downgrade, it would probobly be to 1.6, because for me, 1.7 is when minecraft felt less to me.
*reads TL;DR version instead*
Yeah I would have to agree with you on that one, I completely dislike this hunger system. I could live with the whole exp bar, mineshafts and villages after a while, but I play games like these to escape some reality, without having to run all the way back to my house on a mining trip just to waste 10 minutes and repeat.

There are so many people on Facebook with good photo shopping skills. It's a shame they never use the right there, their, or they're though.

I'd have to say I disagree. That is sort of against what the OP is saying. NPCs and questing make this an RPG not a sandbox creative game. I think that more ores, a better nether and more terrain options are nice but the villages are just ugly and the abandoned mine shafts have spawning issues. I would have to say, instead of adding completely new features like eating and experience and achivements, Notch would do better by adding new ores, revamping the Nether, adding tons of new mobs and adding TONS of new crafting recipes.
i started playing just as beta came out so im not saying your wrong im just saying too me the improvement from start of beta to now is fantastic and i was worried too when the hunger bar was announced but i think they handled it very well food is so easy to get now its avvtually not even remotly hard to maintain your hunger bar i started a new map a day ago and already have like 40 streaks just sitting in my inventory and with gaint mushrooms its easyer than ever to explore and thats what i like to do explore all the diffrent biomes and cave and stuff if anything its not an rpg its an exploring game sorry for lack of grammer and spelling error as i just got off work and dont give a ****
yes minecraft has geared toward the RPG style game play and hunger seems more annoying than enjoyable. my hunger hardly ever goes down and when it does i have enough pork/steak/chicken to satisfy that hunger immediately so it really just takes up space( while i may add that it might cause problems for noobs who do not know how to get and/or cook food)
i do however support the new stone bricks(stone, mossy, cracked stone) and the abandon mines. the endermen seem to be just a new bother they remove 1 and only 1 block from my home just annoying me even more. it is however halirous to see an enderman steal a chest from someone in multi-player.
over all when i got minecraft(beta 1.3_1) it was almost impossible to draw me away from it then 1.7 came along and i liked the pistons mod but that's where it should have stopped at a mod. so to answer the
am i the only one who thinks this?
no i have felt like minecraft has lost something special and i doubt notch will ever realize it.
yeah, i totally agree with you.as soon as i can find an alpha jar, ill be going back :biggrin.gif:. i REALLY hate the hunger bar. I like to be able to heal instantly.
Yeah, you are not alone. I was about to start another thread until I saw this. Minecraft has been ALWAYS fun, since it started back in 0.0.11. When Survival was fully added, it was a heck of a game, like building anything you can imagine, but having to look for the resources first. I really liked it all the way to 1.7.3. Then Notch wanted to give Minecraft a little RPG-ish touch, just like his other games. The hunger, meh, it's cool and isn't annoying, because when your stomach 's full you regenerate hearts, but then they came: Pre-made houses, pre-made mineshafts, pre-made strongholds. I was like "HOLY F-CK What the hell is going on?!?!". Minecraft 1.8 is still epic awesomeness, but if you played Alpha you are going to miss that good ol' Minecraft. They even put a RPG-ish style animated-large-round-particle effect to explosions...
But now think of it: they added Enderman, better and larger biomes, new light system, creative mode, a bit better combat system, and lots of good stuff. Yeah, we are keeping away Minecraft from its old style, but hey, we gotta move onto the new stuff! BTW the experience would be cool-er if they were not given away as orbs, but directly to your experience bar, I mean, in real life some green glowing orbs don't pop out of a sheep when you kill one! Anyways, just remember: Minecraft will keep changing, but for good, if you can't get used to it, play the old Minecraft Alpha and then try to get to it. It's still a very cool game.

How many games do you play for years on end?
How many games do you toss in the garbage, sell on craigslist, or just plain disown?
We've all been playing Minecraft a LONG time now.
It has lost its 'touch' because you've played it too much to appreciate how it changes.
If you had bought it finished, you would have played it for a year and gotten bored too!
Now ask yourself this: Has Minecraft really lost its touch, or have I just played the hell out of it and need a break?
