"Remember that we are playing a beta. When playing a beta you become a betatester. As a betatester you are supposed to give feedback and not act as if it's the final release or 'learn to deal' with all issues in the game. This thread is about giving feedback to Mojang."
Anyway, here it goes.
In the first 1.8 prerelease a new lighting based feature was introduced. You can see it's effect in the images and movies below. Since then it has persisted with minor tweaks up to the 1.9 prerelease.
In short the new effect limits the depth of view for the player the closer to the bottom of the map you go. Starting at about lvl 20 or so. At lvl 5-6 you can't see beyond 10 blocks or so no matter how many light sources there is. As of 1.8 pre 2 your only option is to get sunlight in there to get rid of the effect.
The visual effect is called "black fog" or "void fog"
Unfortunately the black fog's effect makes it impossible to see larger constructions built at the bedrock level. For some that means that all the time they put into creating impressive underground buildings and other constructions has been for more or less nothing, since you can no longer enjoy the view of your labor and it has become almost impossible to navigate large areas.
This thread's purpose is to highlight this problem and try to get Mojang to fix this in any way possible, such as:
- Making it optional
- Making a way to disperse it without digging all the way to the sky
- Removing it altogether
Ideas about optionality revolve around a client setting in the graphical settings menu or a per world setting for both single and multiplayer.
A way to disperse it in game could revolve about some special item that removes the black fog effect for a set of paces. Such as Void torches that would remove the effect for a radius of 8 paces. They could be created with some for of torch and slime ball combination (Perhaps torch+slimeball=void torch or stick+coal+slimeball=4 void torches).
Notch added a lower fog distance at lower levels of the map, to give an "eerie" feeling while mining down deep. It's supposed to be like this. He also added particle effects for the void, and since you're deep, deep, down it kind of makes sense.
