Why are there floating islands of dirt and stone scattered about the land in Minecraft? And why when we build stone on top of piles of dirt, and then remove the dirt, does the stone not fall?
I'm not asking for these things to be implemented. I don't want them to fall. A lot of graceful structures are built around the premise of them NOT falling.
What I'm asking for is an explanation. Can we manipulate gravity? Are the materials capable of telepathic flight, but not coherent thought, and as such will just fly in place until moved by an outside force? Or does the world just think you're special enough to not apply the laws of physics every now and again?
The explanation is that from a programmatic standpoint, it would be nearly impossible to analyze connectivity and simulate physics of an infinitely expansive world. And even if you did, all you'd get is a game that's less visually striking and has really weird, still non-nonsensical physics. So instead nothing is simulated but sand and gravel, which do not stick to other blocks and always fall down.
In terms of, like, mythos... magic? I don't see anything wrong with "because this world works that way", no explanation needed or given.
If stone fell, there would be no caves as the roof would have never existed, Minecraft would just be a big box full of stone rather than the intricate cave systems that we are so proud to have the ability to explore, and if dirt fell, same thing as most cave mouths are at the surface and are surrounded with dirt.

I think sand and gravel are just smarter than stone and the rest, who just forget to fall.
The best thing in this forum so far.
Also everyone else, I know that Minecraft isn't real life. I even said I don't want blocks to fall. I was just asking what your in-game explanation would be. Not "From a programming..." no. I meant what does the character tell himself to justify floating blocks?
Everyone knows it's a game.
Everyone knows it's a decision made my Notch.
Everyone knows it's in the programming.
And if you'd have bothered to read the full post instead of just the title, you'd know that wasn't what I was asking.

What's the explanation?
Because Notch made them float
If the game was realistic, structure building would kinda suck. Also, Creepers and zombies. That will be all.
This.
