A wolf would be useful, and on the shear side, just get a stack of 64 iron or so, since you can make them in 2x2, and then make more when they run out.
I'd say just let loose with a bucket of lava. Otherwise just ignore them and continue the journey. I just hope the same thing doesn't happen with Creepers!
There's a glitch thats' been going around, apparently. Sometimes an entity spawn glitch would occur and you'd have a massive amount of them at once. Don't remember what causes it.

If you didn't spawn them, then it probably just tweaked out when it crashed and spawned many times the number of peaceful creatures. Otherwise, they were spawned.

yea i promise i didnt spawn them, my game crashed and when i started it back up, well that happened :s
