How many are "many", then, and how big is that pen size? Because my chickens are spontaneously dying when they're alone in a 20x20x6 area.
My chicken pens are 8x8 and 4 high. Each with 12-20 birds. With two such pens I have more meat than I need to keep the bar full, so I don't bother to collect eggs most of the times passing that level of my dungeon. If you used a lot of feathers, you might want 2-3 times as many.
Many people talk about birds getting pushed through fences and roaming around, but I would suspect they have pens with multiple birds per square meter, and the birds are simply being forced through by all the jostling about.
The one peculiar behavior of the animals is that they will cluster against a door if it is reachable by them. So I use a pair of ladders to get up to the elevated door into the pen (at the 3-4th block level). They still like the fence side of the room more than the stone walls, but at least I don't have to be concerned about them escaping when I enter and leave. The other animals all dry hump the doors too.

What happens if you kill yours or someone elses farm animal? It doesn't make sense that another mob wont spawn in its place. Will we be fighting over mobs in SMP?
Sheeps should be in an 11 * 11 area because the maximum range of tall grass spawning when using bone meal is 5 blocks away from the block the bone meal is used on.
Also you should use an airlock to get into the pen to prevent mobs from walking out in the sheer second you open the door (which has happened to me).
Chickens tend to push each other into full blocks (as opposed to fences, etc) where they suffocate for a split second. Try using non-full blocks for your coop.
(Enlighten me before I even try it: the tall grass regrowing wool is speculation, right, OP? It's not implemented?)
It's not implemented YET. Jeb said it will though.
You're wrong, Luckstrong. Animals are completely persistent in 1.8, and will not despawn or respawn. Check my thread in my signature if you want more information.
Sheep do regen wool, but they need to eat tall grass, and it is in 1.8.
No they don't. Aggressive mobs and squids despawn, but not any other passive mobs. If you want to refute my statement, read my thread and offer proof like I have. Don't just talk out your ass.

I was just reading this. I wrote this back in 1.7 in preperation for 1.8. I also exactly said what you said about being persistent. Perhaps you misunderstood me?
Hello there. In 1.8 passive mobs such as cows, sheep, chickens, and pigs will no longer despawn when you leave the area. This also brings another feature, they will only spawn once in a loaded area, and after that will rarely respawn. These features bring the ability and need to keep your animals safe and able to produce an unlimited supply of the items you need.

Well I assumed since you want this moved to 1.9, you don't believe it's in 1.8. But your original post, teaching how to keep animals, is completely implemented into 1.8 and wouldn't be relevant to 1.9 unless it's mainly based around breed. Which it doesn't appear to be.

I'm working on breeding research and systems right now actually. I know persistence is in 1.8, but thanks. :laugh.gif:
There, I reverted it back to 1.8. I'll start discussion on breeding systems once I'm finished. I thought it would be nice to hear suggestions though. :dry.gif:

Oh, then completely my bad. I just assumed (Again, I need to stop that) that you were claiming persistence was delayed to 1.9. My bad, sorry about that :3

It's fine. I will link to your thread in my post though. :smile.gif:
WOAH WAOH,sheep regenerate wool if they eat tall grass?
Uh, I'm actually going to say no right now. I had seen a thread and even heard from a few friends that sheep eating grass will regrow wool, but my testing has yet to see it. From the information I can find, it was only in Survival Test and part of Indev.
So I retract my statement on sheep wool regen. I'm going back to my original statement thatsheep don't regain wool, and I'll make an update in my thread in a few hours when I've spent a while in game testing all theories.

Okay. They are supposed to be regaining that ability soon according to jeb.

I'm just the messenger.
Thanks for the tip.

According to Phar, yes.
It's fine. I will link to your thread in my post though. :smile.gif:
I'm going to go and test this again, just to be sure I'm right.
Thanks, I will too. I just haven't had time. If your results come back positive I'll give you more credit.
