Earlier today, I caught wind of a video where a guy set fire to a huge Gir statue made out of blocks in MC. I view the act of grieving as silly and easily reversible, but the comments I saw seemed to be filled with vitriol and hatred toward the man.
Wow your a terrible person you parents should have beat you more than they did.
This was one of the quotes from the comments, and as I write this, it was 30 thumbs up. Is this the kind of view people have? That they want to joke about a real problem in light of a virtual burning? Typing this kind of stuff is horrendous, and not to mention the grammar is terrible.
i'm gonna slit your throat you griefing piece of ****, you come near my server ever again you'll find your computer ddossed by 4k botnets you retard.
Not ****ing cool, at all. Fake, empty threats of real world violence as well as technical lack of knowledge. Not only is this insulting, but it's illiterate.
Why are people getting so riled up over this? It seems that this is not an isolated group of people getting mad over a reversed grief, but the general consensus of the entire MC community. They are saying that someone deserves suffering just because someone's voxel art was burned.
It makes me sad that the majority of the MC community is like this. Tell me what you think about this, and please don't tell me you support people who spew such hate.

having a slabcastle is slabtastic because people can see you build it from the sprout
It sucks when peoples efforts are destroyed by someone who's bored and in it for the ensuing lulz. But there really is no reason for people to get so butthurt over being griefed. It's not just minecraft, it's pretty much any game that type of behavior happens (People going full derp mode and threatening physical violence/"hacking"). I think it stems mostly from people not knowing how to intelligently express their displeasure via text, and/or a lack of maturity. In short, aspies who have no idea how to interact in a social environment.

Greifing Is part of mc. These assburgers infested idolitors who get butthurt when their 3000 block statue gets raped are lame. And i wish nothing but rape for their server
Aspergers general, anybody who even remotely cares for something that is created in virtual space is retarded.
I've been griefed a dozen times, fell in lava when getting diamond, blown up, and killed by other players.
Did it bother me? No, you just move somewhere else and deal with it.
I sort of agree with this, I've only had one of my structures "griefed" excessively, whereby a player burnt down a "to scale" (1 texel to 1 block) statue I made of a creeper. Was a pain getting all that wool and cactus, let me tell you. It was an accident though... I was just "haha oh well".
That said I don't like griefers. As much as it is silly to get attached to what are essentially specific arrangements of data on a disk somewhere, isn't it even more pointless to destroy stuff for no reason? I mean, really- the source code to many of the utilities/programs I've written are just specific arrangements of data on a disk, should I just shrug and laugh if some asshole ****ed it up? No, I'd kick their ass. Then I'd restore from a backup- but my programs represent countless hours of invested time; MC structures often represent the same. I fail to see- (although trust me I really want to see) a elementary difference in concept between them. (And I honestly wouldn't like somebody to help with that, it kind of bugs me to think that creations made in minecraft are on-par with writing an application)
Clever greifers- that can be entertaining. Watching some asshole simply use a flint and steel and burn **** isn't funny. What's funny is watching them place elaborate traps or something in other peoples mines and whatnot and watching how the victims deal with the situation.
That said I actually hate "grief-callers" that constantly say "OMG somebody griefed my stuff" for the smallest thing. A bloody workbench isn't where they remember it and they are "oh **** we have a griefer". Then I travel ALL THE WAY over to their stupid building only to find that the "griefer" only remove two blocks and a bed. That's it? you drag me all the way out here for this ****? get ****ed man. It was funny to see the dialog between him and the other player when they discovered it- "don't touch anything, it's a crime scene" making it sound like it was some serious ****. Which it wouldn't be anyway, then it turns out it's just three blocks that they can replace within a few seconds instead of wasting my god damned time. Come to think of it those are the only two players that seem to have this idea that they ought to be able to tell everybody else where they can and cannot build. Thankfully the admin has let them jolly off into a newly generated multiverse world. I'm working on convincing him to accidentally break the multiverse connection back.

Not saying the reaction was justified, but griefers really are the worst kinds of people. They get satisfaction out of other peoples misery. The fact it is online is the only "saving grace" as it were since no physical harm can be done, still it's one step removed from torturing cats and dogs/other animals in real life.
Most of these people probably have emotional or mental issues. Lack of empathy toward and deriving pleasure from anothers suffering (in any sense) are among the symptoms of psychopathy/sociopathy.
this, except for 2nd paragraph, behind the veil of anonimity of the internet you dare do things that wouldn't even cross your mind in real life, you dare say things that even for you would sound way too harsh.
no use on comparing real life with the internet: here bullies are more bully and responses to bullies are of the fashion of what you saw on these youtube videos.
the point is: this does not automatically imply the person in question has mental problems or is a sociopath or something alike, as they know there is no physical harm done.
It could be argued that the internet acts as an inhibition reducer in the same way an intoxicant does and as such can highlight instances of such disorders that are mild enough to not be evident in real life. As the old saying goes - you will never meet a more honest person then a drunkard.
One does not have to cause physical harm to be a sociopath, they often do go together but it is just the derivation of enjoyment or pleasure in others that is the symptom. Senses of entitlement, that the "rules" do not apply to them because they are "better" are also found in sociopaths.
Just because something is done anonymously does not mean the root causes are different. A pedophile is still a pedophile whether he/she assaults children in the park or secretly spends his/her nights looking for CP online.

Griefing isn't necessarily because someone enjoys "harming" others, it could be a result of someone having a bad day and passing that bad day along to others to relieve stress. People get yelled at constantly at work, bitten by a dog or whatever else, they feel the need to be a jerk to others to lighten their own aggravation. It doesn't mean they're a sociopath or any of that other stuff, just means they're a jerk doing their part in the circle of jerkiness. I heavily disagree with you that anyone does something douchey is automatically classified as enjoying "harming" others. By the logic of your earlier post, even yelling at someone could be construed as enjoying their misery. Which, incidentally is the same logic racists (First example that comes to mind) use to assume that just because one person conforms to a set of traits, that the entire group does. Nobody is better than anyone else, your post makes it seem as though you think you're better than griefers enough to judge what their motivation is.
Take this post with a grain of salt, as it's merely my musing on the matter, which counts for little.

Honestly, how old do you think those people are? They can insult you, call you a "kid," or brag about how awesome their life is but even if it were all true they seem to think this justifies flaming others. Those who do this are almost never an adult despite what they say. It makes them feel better I suppose. To sum it all up:

what is this? i don't even...
But seriously, this is just how some people act on the internet. An effect of being anonymous.
