Probably the fastest way down is to fall. This is the basement of my castle:
In the right background, where the signs are, is a 4X4 shaft that goes down to level 12. The minecart track goes straight down at a 45 degree angle about halfway, turns 180 degrees, then goes the rest of the way down in the opposite direction, winding up approximately straight down from where it started.
I hit the button on the other side of the block in the foreground, sending the cart down, then run over and drop down the shaft. I have a water brake at the bottom that breaks my fall (Not my design. Not sure who originated it.) This is the bottom of the shaft:
Above the ladders are three layers of water. The ladders keep it from falling. The water breaks your fall and you drop through into the area shown. I usually beat the cart down by several seconds. I send the cart down so I can ride it back up.

I generally stick with walking up and down stairs, sometimes ladders. Falling into water is alright but you still have to return the slow way.
In one of my worlds I have a deep vertical shaft that I can jump down into water pretty quickly, and to get back I made a portal at the top and then one at the bottom which goes to the same Nether portal so I just pop in the bottom one and then return to the top one, so getting back up is as fast as changing worlds twice.
Does anyone still use quantum carpal tunneling? (That's where you put a lot of boats or carts boxed in placed in a row and click to move from one to the next at ludicrous speed.
Still a fan of regular ladders with a drop going down, slowed by a water brake to prevent fall damage. I do like water elevators, but it's a lot of effort. I only use them on certain occasions that they should look nice and "impress" people :wink.gif:.
I Have a minecart track that 'dead ends'. Except it doesn't end, it goes off a cliff... well... into a 1x1 hole... that drops to layer 15... layers 14-10 are water in that spot. So I ride a minecart 0.89 km from my house into a hole in the ground, fall damn-near to bedrock, smack my cart and jump. to get back up, I have a ladder that goes *almost* to surface, to a door, that goes into a walled off area, that's actually just 1-deep dirt with a tree on top. dig dirt, replace dirt. although I'm considering replacing the ladder with an upward spiral of powered track. you know, go all out, it's all powered, and lit with redstone torches because YEAH! WASTED MATERIALS!
I'm also considering making my main base under-water though... with traps that are turned off with an and gate. or a nor gate... not sure which... both work. but basically ride a minecart to a dead end near a cliff... jump off the cliff into a pool that has a hole in the bottom... make sure its under enough water that it's not visible from the surface even with lights.

Don't tell me that the sky is the limit, when there are footprints on the moon.
What do you guys use? Should I just build a minecart track down to my mine or is there a faster way?
Stairs, ladders, or a mincart, take your pick.
Ok thank you :smile.gif:
Now to find gold for boosters :sad.gif: lol
Thats what I am saying, everyone says they are fixed now but I have yet to have trouble with mine

Edit: )
About the same thing here.
You really talking about water ladders and not just waterfalls?

Besides, gold doesn't really have any other uses. Using for armor or tools is a complete waste. What else are you gonna use all your gold for?
