I had been mining obsidian now that I figured out how to do it with pretty much no risk (isolate a lava lake, water it, peel it off one layer at a time until gone) and after I broke out of that kinetic trance, I decided to make my first portal and see the Nether.
(Anyone know if it matters where you make your portal? This first one was at bedrock. Entry point didn't seem especially high or low in the Nether. It was on the ground up against a wall though.)
Interesting looking, but then the ghast showed up and I dodged around for a while, using a lot of arrows to kill it. Then I found a big cave of sorts open at both ends a bit, then another ghast showed up and hit something, which practically flooded the whole floor with lava from above and almost killed me. Then another ghast, and I went back to the portal and returned to my mine.
It doesn't look like a lot of fun in there...a source of interesting materials, got a screenshot, I can't see myself spending a lot of tourist time there. But then, who knows...a month from now I might have some base in there or something.
Note: Next time you feel like bringing up Herobrine, just delete Minecraft, your worlds, convince them to delete your forum account. Hell, melt down your computer, send it through a shredder, and scatter the flakes in the ocean.
Whoo! The Nether. I never spend much time in there myself. I did plan an adventure inside a few months back when I was afraid of fighting for and figured Ghasts would be an easy alternative...bad decision.
I found the nether a really cool place at first, but it is empty and desolate, instead of a hard-as-hell dimension with boss mobs and various biomes...
instead... we get
3 blocks (with different abilitys not really present in vanilla minecraft)
2 mobs (one with a group AI, and the first flying one)
a lot of inactivity and not even news if something new is going to be added there
it is a cool place at all, and it is bigger from what i made it seem (new world generation, portal linking, first flying mob, tibal-like mob)
but, I feel its laking
I'm quite certain the reason why there isn't much in the Nether is because it was something Notch and team really wanted to do. I'm sure they wanted it to be a constant in Minecraft, that has very good grounding in it; part of the Minecraft universe. Because of that, I believe, is why they made it so soon, and have delayed any work on it so far. They must see other additions and fixes as more of a priority than anything in the Nether. Plus, considering the nature of the Nether, it may be a special place where updates are only issued on Halloween!
Is there any word on when/if it will work in multiplayer?
Currently there are servers that are in the nether, but traveling from the nether to the normal world can't work at present.
The way traveling to the nether works, for it to work in multiplayer requires 2 servers running at same time, 1 for the nether and 1 for the normal world, then a system that allows traveling from one server to another.
So the plan is to make it possible to use portals to move from one server to another server. Then we'll have the ability to travel to and from the nether in multiplayer. No idea when this will come tho.

Still no infinite strongholds D:
I've got a makeshift square house made of cobble in there. Can take a while to build as you have to keep the ghasts off you. Also grow trees in there so I have a source of wood and don't have to go back to the overworld.
