NO FLAMING. My last good thread (which even Jens replied to) got locked because people from Reddit and 4chan decided to flame-spam it.
Before you post: this thread was not written with the intention to complain about the speed/quality of updates to the game, but for Notch's ideas for the mod API. Please do not reply to this thread with the intention to discuss the updating of the game.
You all may know me on this forum as the guy who keeps posting threads insulting Notch - but that was for the 3-month long "Ice Age" we had in updates. As soon as updates started rolling in regularly, Notch suddenly drops the bomb saying "Jens was moved to a different project," "Pistons are delayed (AGAIN)" and now this garbage with having to pay to mod the game?
Pistons? Alright, we can do for now. Jens? He's a great coder and he did great on the past few updates for Minecraft, but let's see what he can do on a different project.
However: Notch has decided that he had plans to make US pay for a license to mod the game. If that's not bad enough, he decided that Mojang would have full rights to incorporate our mods into the game at their whim. Which means: we pay Mojang to update THEIR game. All the updates you love? Minimaps, Mo' Creatures, Mo' Humans, Minecart Mania - gone, unless the mod developer would want to pay for Mojang to potentially take your work.
Notch may have revoked his last plan to commercialize Minecraft, but from the way he's going with this game, I don't think I'm going to buy another Mojang product again - if this is what I can expect from the head developer, anyway.
It's like having one of those chinese carnival dragons and telling the guys at the back end to go make coffee, leaving the dragon to drag its ass around and mess up the carnival.

I have better things to do than interfere with a man' life.
Especially Notch. He's a programmer, he made a game , and I like it. I play it because I like it, and Notch doesn't listen to people, so I won't bother him.
Get a life up and running. You must have better things to do than worry about a man living in Sweden, doing a pet coding project, and aiming to become a rich Valve-like company that releases weird games that we still keep buying.
Apparently you didn't see the edit. It's FREE now.
You know, I'm surprised you guys are whining about Notch anyways. He gives you updates on a weekly/monthly basis. Hell, you're WAAAAAY better off than the folks at the Spore community. When was their last update? 2-3 years ago. Last expansion pack? 2 years ago. And to top it all off, the company that made the game makes a "new" Spore game instead of the needed bugfixes and demands for new expansion packs which will be released this week (Yes, I'm looking at you Darkspore).
This has nothing to do with the speed (or lack of, anyway) of updates or coding he's doing. I'm discussing the fact that he considered and even planned to put in action a system that would remove YOUR right to play and create mods on the game you paid for. How could you support a clearly lazy developer that is basically telling you "You can't mod my game until you pay for a license, and I reserve the right to incorporate your mod into my game at anytime."?
This has never been done in the video game industry before, and the fact that thousands of people that never even played Minecraft before are protesting this move is just a testament to how much negative attention Notch is getting.

Why are we comparing our "luxuries" between an indie game and a 3 year old failed PC game by a big company? Again: my OP had nothing to do with the speed or quality of Notch's updates. In fact - if anything, recent updates have been promising and I hope to see more speedy updates like such in the future. However, this thread was written to underline the fact that Notch wants to remove our abilities to mod the game as we wish and change it into a pseudo-auto updating scheme that wouldn't require him to work anywhere near as much as he is now.
It's lazy and it speaks volumes of how much more Notch cares about money than the happiness of his fan base.
It's like having one of those chinese carnival dragons and telling the guys at the back end to go make coffee, leaving the dragon to drag its ass around and mess up the carnival.
It's just the fact that you guys keep telling us all that Notch isn't working hard enough to make Minecraft a good game. SO WHAT!? If I were him, I wouldn't do so much anymore because I already had tons of money. We should be happy instead than keep whining about everything which isn't featured in Minecraft etc.
Just play the game. If you would really like Minecraft, you would enjoy the game as how it is and the updates would only be a little extra because we support Mojang.
I'm not a fanboy which is defending Mojang, I'm just telling some facts here which already have been told for ages.
Again, I think you're in the wrong thread. This isn't a thread complaining about the lack or quality of updates, it's about Notch's ideas for the mod API.
It's like having one of those chinese carnival dragons and telling the guys at the back end to go make coffee, leaving the dragon to drag its ass around and mess up the carnival.
the fact that Notch wants to remove our abilities to mod the game as we wish
Nowhere in his post is this stated.
What he wants to do would add a more accessible feature that would make it easier for players to find mods to install as well as make modding easier for those who sign up.
Modders will still be able to make their mods outside the license deal, but would have to use the current system to do it.
I'm discussing the fact that he considered and even planned to put in action a system that would remove YOUR right to play and create mods on the game you paid for.
Where are you getting the 'play' part of this? Nowhere did he indicate you'd have to pony up money to use the mods that were created as part of the process.
Secondly, even under the original plan, you didn't have to pay to develop a mod. You simply wouldn't have access to the source code if you didn't. In other words: Exactly the situation we have now. Clearly, the current state of affairs isn't stopping everyone from modding!
Thirdly, he did change his mind, and quickly too. Isn't this a positive sign, that he is, in fact, listening to the community?

Easier to find mods to install? Notch had plans to create a "mod marketplace" much like a TF2 hat shop or the Portal 2 DLC store in which people would buy and sell mods. How would you feel if you had to pay to gain the right to play and create mods? Sounds more like a Korean "Free-to-Play, Pay-to-Enjoy" MMO.
Not to mention that Mojang could lift your mod and code it into the full game at anytime, basically giving them a green-light to let the community build the game for them.

I would love to see anyone complaining about notch not listening or notch being lazy IF they had to listen to 2 million members of a community. I would also love to see them actually try and code anything in java too. Do you think its pulling shapes around the screen like 'game maker'
reality check please, if you are expecting top end effeiceny only buy games from the big developers
This discussion has nothing to do with "how hard it is to code a game in Java" or the difficulties of PR work. Please read and understand the OP before you decide to post.

This whole license thing is a cover up.

My apologies for the "free" statement above. I believe I missed it when reading though your post.
And I brought that up since the community complains so much that it doesn't even compare to what the guys over there have endured. We could have been like they have instead of where we are now with daily updates and fixes. I don't see why you think that he won't work just as hard as he is due to modding support. He adds his updates into the game, and if a modding idea sounds good, he includes it with the update. Seems like a fair trade-off. I doubt he would just dump it in without credibility to the one who made it. That's my input on this anyways.

Sadly, Sergeant, no one cares what you actually said on this board as long as it disagrees with their opinion, and even if they did, most of them only learned how to read last week so it would still be difficult for them to comprehend your meaning.

I was initially disappointed by the announcement, but I'm relived to see that they've understoood how important modding is to the community.
Even with all the waffling Minecraft seems much more friendly to modding than most other games out there. A lot of game companies might be locking people out with cease-and-desist orders, but Mojang has actually always encouraged modding. Even at the worst case - if they went ahead and went back again to asking for a paywall... they were offering full access to the Minecraft source code in exchange. Who else does that?
I understand the confusion and disappointment, but I honestly don't get where all the fury is coming from.
But you're on /v/ right now getting people to come here and write comments for you to put in the OP with credit.

I was infuriated by the update earlier (less so now) but even I think you're retarded.

Games that are still enjoyed thanks to modding-
Morrowind, Oblivion, Starcraft, Garrys Mod, Half-Life (And thus TF2, Portal, ectectect), ect.
Modability isn't just a word I made up, it's the line between Minecraft being a fad and a cult classic.

I've been disappointed in Notch.. like since I first started playing. But there's a new 2D game coming out just like Minecraft... it looks so dope. I'll probably start playing that.
It has everything to do with that or you wouldn't be monaing that notch isnt doing everything how you want him to do it
