Ok so your going to do this right well will this be done in smp or ssp your going to need teams of people doing all different things like one team to get wood another to get diamond and so on i would love to be apart of this but for some reason i think this will never happen.
Since this would require multiple people, you may want to adjust your design now for two tracks, forward and back, to prevent collisions.
Plus, nothing like idling for 2 days on the track, only to find out that some other guy was coming back and hit you 10 minutes into your run.
Why would we ever want to go backwards? the resources we need would always be available around the area were building. The only time the complete journey back would need to be made is at the point where we can show that we can use is to get all the way to the far lands.
I think I'll be waiting at the very least until the Nether is fixed in multiplayer before event thinking about getting this going. In the meantime, I understand there's someone else who wants to do the track in the overworld. Work on that if you want, but just keep in mind, you'll have to multiply everything I've calculated here by ~8 to do it in the overworld....
no, those are a bunch of losers who are going to spawn in every supply they need. if you are going to take a shortcut, why take the longer one? just edit the map and put the railway down from mcedit, why even bother lying it yourself.
i want to be in a server where its done as op was describing it, as in we mine and earn it the way notch intended the game to be played. i persoanlly dont get the enjoyment in cheat halfway, hell they could jsut as easily teleport there.
if yourgoing to take a shortcut in doing something, dont stop halfway.
OK let me break it down for you.
The FarLands are about 12,500,000 meters away. Keep that number in mind because I am going to use it for all my calculations. Divide that by 8 for the Nether equals 1,562,500 blocks. The maximum powered rails can push you is 8 m/s so divide by 8 again equals 195,312.5 seconds. Divide by 60 to get minutes equals 3255.21 minutes. Divide buy 60 again to get hours equals 54.25 hours that is more than two days in the real world and 162.76 Minecraft days. I just wanted to go ahead and break it out.
Now if I was the project manager for this operation, the walking path I would be making would be 3 blocks wide 5 if you include walls. It would have 2 rail ways 1 going forward and 1 going back. The railways would be against the walls and the torches for light and the Redstone torches to power the rails would be in the middle. The reason for the rail back is that I would want to show everyone just how massive and undertaking this project was by setting up a ware house at the beginning of the track to hold all the nether rack and other items we come across from the entire operation in chests. Also all the material I use would come from some quarry or something just outside the portal. Just imagine the size of the hole in the ground an operation of this magnitude would leave In fact before I even found this thread I was doing just that except since I am in single player and don’t have to worry about other people on my track my path is only 2 wide 4 counting the walls and I only have one rail. I have put about 10 hours into my tunnel and my tunnel is now 10 minutes walking long. All materials are brought in from the beginning and trucked to the end of the tunnel. The most annoying part of the whole thing is laying the cobblestone path over the gaping expanses. Today I had an idea that maybe if I moved my tunnel to the very top of the nether I might not have to bridge so many gaps. I tested this theory and it seems to me that by building it near the top of the map you significantly cut down on the need for bringing large pools of lava but at the cost of scenery but let’s face it you weren’t really going to sit at your computer for 2.5 days anyway while your guy took a mine cart to the FarLands so who cares.
Anyway my thinking for two rails is that if you’re not going to go back anyway then just reset your respawn every once and a while at the end of your tunnel and forget about the tracks entirely.

Two more things on a final note. 1st is that in beta 1.6 the nether will function in SMP so this project will be possible. Number two is that if 8 m/s is to slow for you then you can use regular booster which can get up to faster speeds but at the cost of more track and mine carts more engineering and the possibility that booster mine carts might disappear and leave you stranded.
And if anyone does decide to make a server for this let me no because I would definitely spend a lot of time on it.
Have we come to a consensus about how much we can space powered rails on flat ground to maintain ~top speed? Once we settle on that question, I'll revamp this spreadsheet to include powered rails.
Powered rails give you a momentum of 128 blocks and optimal placement is one every 32 blocks according to the wiki.
To maintain speed they have to be placed every 8 blocks ... I should know, I run rails all over.
...even if you ride by minecart, you'd still have to place all the tracks to the far lands, thus making the minecart redundant.
But then when you are done you can ride back and forth, producing the world's greatest speed up train ride video in existence!
Also, should we make it at the ceiling of the Nether or the middle for a nice view? That raises the question, do we want mobs on? I say yes to mobs and yes to the middle, what do you think?
(Btw, I will not host the server if people want to spawn items, I like things done legit)
I think that until 1.6 we can gather materials for the railway
Right now there are 20 slots, but I can increase that if it is needed.
There is a whitelist, so just ask here to be put on it.

if this is accomplished (*1000) to everyone involved in getting to the far lands and triple it for the Corner!
EDIT: (^1000) if its done solo!
Same send me a mail if it ever does.

anywho lunch break is almost over gotta go.
I Reject Your Reality and Substitute Minecraft!
I used to have one a while back, was quite popular. Had it for around 5-6 months.
My computer can handle it, don't worry :biggrin.gif:

Another note: going into 3rd person could eliminate the threat of ghasts.
Now here is a real challenge: write a bot that can intelligently mine materials and then a macro to build the rail. Stick 20 on a server, and run it.
