The only thing i don't like about this is the loudness of rain. In my opinion, it's a little too loud. Maybe that was just a super hurricane rain and other weaker rains will be softer, but i just hope that it isnt that loud on release.
also, never thought about how the rain will put out the lightning fire, seems pointless.

Hopefully the lightning strikes can destroy a couple of blocks in the spot it hits... and spark a little fire, so fire that will eventually be doused by rain ain't the only thing to worry about when this event occurs. Giving it a little relevance?
I'm hoping it'll put out the fire after a few seconds if no additional fires have been started. All resulting fires will continue burning until whatever is burning is gone.
In my opinion, water should make fire go out a tiny bit faster, and have a chance not to spread. That way, forest fires would still happen from lightning, but they would burn out more quickly and not cause as much destruction.
The only thing I don't like about that is that we'll have half burnt trees without leaves everywhere. (in forests anyways)
Not necessarily. The trunks are protected from the rain by the leaves, so the fire should be able to spread to the trunk before being doused out completely, assuming that the lightning strikes the top of the tree.
I like the idea of weather except what is really the purpose of rain? The video or no one has explained this but I know the rain is just supposed to add atmosphere to the game but what practical use does it have? In the video, it doesn't show rain being able the create source blocks or having an effect on the enviorment at all. All this seems to be is just classic rain with noise and randomly turned on and off.

As long as there is an option to turn it on and off, i love it. It gives the environment more realism. I'd rather see rain than just a cloudy sky while walking around. IDK how to describe it, but it makes the game look better. Things could be implemented to take advantage of the weather... we don't know what notch has planned for it. They didn't want to reveal too much in the video, and they're probably still testing/adding onto the weather/achievement systems.
Too bad Notch just meant stupid things like how many times you mined coal or how many times you destroyed trees.
I remember him explicitly saying he didnt want these kinds of achievements. I am disappoint. Maybe. We still havent seen more of them.
Also weather is nice but the textures have been in the game since forever so I don't really feel like its as special as it could be. They should make it follow cloud patterns imo. Then the way to 'turn it off' would be to have a cloudless texture file.

.
My guess is those achievements are merely a tutorial type thing. I mean when a new person starts up minecraft do you think they are going to think 'Oh I should punch a tree!!'
Also so far we have only had a glimpse of it, and in truth they seem to follow what a tutorial might do in order to give a new player some aid in starting up.
Need more NPCS and better AI
I still want to see realism mode and maybe more blocks that can act as defense from Mobs
Like real trap doors i know you can make them now but.
I want one like the floodgate mod.
