Just so we are all clear, "best for gaming" is not the same as "most common for gaming" nor should it be mistaken as such. Also, where's the BSD option? Oh wait, there are no BSD games...
EDIT: Except platform-independent games, like Minecraft
Ok, the reason why people have different views is because they use their computers differently.
Thoose people who pushes their computer to their limit would prefer linux because there is nothing you cannot do with the os, it's open source and you can edit it as you wish.
Macs are just damn expensive but they are somewhat flawless when you think about the design of their OS but apple is paranoid and make it insanly difficult for the average geek to do anything good on it, compared to windows.
Windows is the most used os, just look at the market. Windows works with everything, hooray!
But in my experience windows use so much damn memory.
Linux would be the best option to run minecraft as the os is lightweight compared to mac and windows.
That's my 2 cent.
p.s i didn't read 4 pages worth of arguement.
Linux sucks as a desktop, unless you edit that way, it makes for a great server though.
I can only speak for myself:
Macbook 5.1, 2,4 GHz Core 2 Duo, Nvidia 9400m and 2 Gb.
I had to install Windows 7 because Minecraft in Mac has a very low performance (Java sucks in OSX).
Minecraft running on the same laptop:
Mac OSX (Medium render distance)--> Laggy and some crashes.
Windows 7 (Far render distance) --> Fast, everything is fine!
Really I can play on far and fancy graphics on my mac and it works fine.
Which Mac do you have? I've tried a lot of graphic options.

I'm not sure exactly it is my dad's old computer, but it is a mac intel. It was the version before the recent version. Sorry if I'm not much help, but I didn't buy the computer.
I really disagree with you why would it be better without it? I am not a microsoft fan I have things thatI dislike about their products, but microsoft has put out an invention that has helped the world if anything, (Even if they are copying mac's in their OS.) You might as well have more than less right? I basically am trying to say it being out there only adds more choices and more competition which is good for apple and linux
They bought ideas. Powerpoint wasn't their idea. Some guy sold it to some company (dunno, maybe Forethought, not sure) and then they sold that to Microsoft. Just an example.

I again don't really like microsoft either, but microsoft buying an idea I don't see how that makes much of a difference.

That changes everything. If not Microsoft, better realisations of these ideas would be more popular.

Are you trying to say that if not for Microsoft the less popular powerpoint makers could be seen and would be more popular, like Microsoft is sort of a monopoly sort of in the powerpoint programs?

Microsoft got popular because they are monopolists.
Mac is by far the best. After my 4th PC died right after we renewed our norton subscription yet again we got an Imac. I have no idea why people put up with such slow pieces of crap. Mac can do everything better then windows except games but PC gaming is dead anyways. Just look at how bad the ports of Fallout NV and COD Black Ops are. Linux technically is the best but doesn't have enough 3rd party software for me.
Plus Microsoft ripped of Apple with the taskbar and many other features. Evil greedy bastards.
BTW the OP is an obvious troll by starting this thread.

And how is this evil? They took an idea and improved upon it.
As for what OS you should use...
But if you have a decent rig, you might as well just go with Windows instead of Linux to save yourself from headaches down the line. Don't get me wrong, linux can be pretty cool, but it takes a LOT of practice and google searching to sometimes get even the most basic things up and working
For example, i have a gaming keyboard that linux did not recognize the drivers to. Even with the driver files sitting on the desktop, linux couldn't figure out how to install them, or what they were even for. Several hours and about 4-dozen google searches later, i found the command that got the drivers installed correctly. Windows on the other hand, not only recognized the keyboard right off the bat, it automatically downloaded an updated version of drivers (which were not even available on Linux yet) as the OS finished installing itself. Talk about convenient.
If you do not want to shell out the money to buy Windows 7, just torrent it. You don't even need to be tech-suave to figure it out, as usually you just have to burn the ISO to a DVD and then pop it in your DVD drive to install. That's it.
If you have a low-end or really old machine, you might want to go for Linux though. Linux runs very fast on low-end machines. But you have at least a halfway-decent machine, just don't bother with Linux unless you are already quite familiar with it or if are planning on using Linux for other projects anyway. You could always dual-boot with linux as a second option so you can choose which one you like better.
If you have a Mac, just use whatever you are more comfortable with. Normally I would say Windows again for gaming, but i don't think it matters that much with Minecraft.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! "Gaming keyboard"... A keyboard with junk added to it. Why the hell would you need that? Get a proper keyboard.
All the hardware that requires additional drivers on windows worked for me straight out of the box in Ubuntu.

It is a proper keyboard, ****. Don't insult me for having a piece of hardware just because it didn't work on Linux. And that was just ONE of the plethora of things what did not work with Ubuntu when i installed it. I actually had to go two weeks without sound because Ubuntu didn't recognize my speakers and a fix had not been developed for them yet.
You damn well know that ANY new or high-end hardware will probably, if not certainly, fail or error or simply not be detected. Hardly anything is just plug and play.
"All the hardware that requires additional drivers on windows worked for me straight out of the box in Ubuntu." Either you have an INCREDIBLY dated machine or you're lying. I've installed 3 different distros on several comps and i've NEVER had any setup go anywhere CLOSE to the smooth install of Windows or Mac. On two of the comps i put it on, Ubuntu didn't even detect my internet connection, which was plugged in via ethernet (and it was Ubuntu's fault FYI, as SuSe, Fedora, and obviously Windows detected the internet fine). I mean come on
Again, Linux can be great if you have a low-end machine, but if you've got anything decent it's not worth messing with (unless you plan on using it for something else), as Windows and Mac will run things just as smooth with more compatibility and less hassle. Don't listen to this guy with his strange Ubuntu hard-on, cause it's anything but the magical, free, easy OS that he's making it out to be. It's complicated and confusing at first, and even after working with it for several years, an error i've never encountered will still force me to do half a dozen google searches to figure out what happened. There's a reason linux distros are the least used type of OS. You get what you pay for.

No. No. No. Everything works fine. It is your own fault. Nobody had ANY problems with NORMAL keyboards. I guess you have something like Logitech G15. And look, what do we have? Some extra stupid useless buttons and a useless LCD! Keyboards are fully supported. If you want third party additions, such as extra keys, you need third party drivers. There is a normal protocol, which these "gaming keyboards" don't follow.
Sound? Well, you are out of luck. No need for anything but an onboard soundcard. If you have some fancy soundcard, it's useless and it isn't even better than built in ones, which are fully supported. Would be helpful if you told us the model and the manufacturer.
I never saw anything that doesn't work on Ubuntu. I have a webcam, that doesn't even properly work on Windows, with its own drivers. On Ubuntu, faultless. I have an onboard soundcard. No problems with sound, at all. I have a mouse with some special functions. It works, I even got some additional functions to work, although I don't really need them.
Incredibly dated? No, no it is not. It is quite new, actually. Smooth install? What, it took me 2 hours (including the time I was waiting for it to "copy" files) to reinstall Windows with all the correct drivers. Linux needed no additional drivers and installed in less than 20 minutes. Everything works fine for me. I would like to thank corporations like Intel for making their drivers opensource, as well as the whole Linux community for this great, truly portable and "plug'n'play" operating system. Internet? Pfffft... I need PPTP to connect to the internet. My scheme is Computer -(Ethernet)- ADSL modem -(Normal telephone cable)- ISP - ISP's Gateway - The web. So basically, my ISP acts like a VPN. Again, no problems.
Linux is also great for high end machines. It was built for high end machines. It was built to be both lightweight and productive, which it definitely is. The major mistake in Windows is that everything is tied to the GUI. Linux doesn't have that major downside.
Linux doesn’t crash without any apparent reasons. In Linux the core operating system (kernel) is separate from the GUl (X-Window) from the applications (OpenOffice.org, etc). So even if the application crashes, the core operating system is not affected. In Windows (Microsoft prefers to call this tight integration)
Linux is been used for super computing clusters, most of top super computers in the World use Linux. Windows just can’t scale to that level.
Processor scalability: Linux can scale to Unlimited processors. It is already running on a single system with 2048 CPUs. Windows can’t even claim to come anywhere near that number.
(Information from 2007, that racked up a lot recently!)

doesnt matter;
if someone wants to play wow on his brandnew keyboard, and the keyboard doesnt work on linux but on windows, ___________. I am not saying anything about linux here, or people will go batshit insane
I play on Mac, and it can be a real pain in the neck when I want to use mods and texture packs, it took me an hour with the help of two friends do get one texture pack onto my computer.
U n00b? You only need to right-click the folders, choose "compress" and rename the resulting archive from ".zip" to ".jar". Move the jar in the texture packs folder and you're done.
There's one flaw in the texture packs menu, though: clicking "open texture pack folder" doesn't open ****. Shame on Notch.
