Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat, and Counter-Strike were not even remotely by Valve, but yes
It annoys me to hear people claim that Team Fortress was by Valve when Team Fortress came out like 12 hours before Valve was even conceived
"Counter-Strike (also known as Half-Life: Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike 1.6, or simply CS) is a tactical first-person shooter video game developed by Valve Corporation which originated from a Half-Life modification by (...fanmod devs)"
"Day of Defeat: Source is a team-based first-person shooter multiplayer video game developed by Valve Corporation"
"Team Fortress was designed and written by Robin Walker, John Cook and Ian Caughley in 1996. The mod's gameplay has caught on with a large following of fans, which has spurred many developers to create similar gamemodes on other engines. In August 1999, after the development team was hired by Valve, Team Fortress was ported to Valve's Half-Life engine in the form of Team Fortress Classic."
I would call that made by valve.
some are based on fanmade halflife-mods, but valve made them actual games.
But I know what you mean with not by valve, its not their ideas, its mods made to games. Still, I would consider them valvegames.
Counter-Strike was made by Gooseman, who sold the mod to Valve
Day of Defeat (not Source, as I said) was also not made by Valve; the team joined Valve later
Team Fortress was a mod for Quake, made before Valve. August 1999 was almost 3 years after it was created.
Calling these things "made by Valve" is like saying McRegion was made by Mojang because they included bits of it in one of their updates. No matter if you consider Team Fortress 2 a standalone game by Valve or not, Team Fortress was definitely not created by Valve in any conceivable way. Counter-Strike, which remains little more than a mod, is not a full game just because there was a fee for it at some point. For example, the Malice and Shrak total conversions for Quake had more assets and even single player campaigns, in addition to retail copies and these were still considered mods. At any rate, no one from Valve was involved in the process of actually creating Counter-Strike.

Voted Mojang.
3 reasons:
-Valve haven't made a single good thing since TF2 (and I only vote for the last year's work, since Valve already won this contest twice)
-Mojang is a small indie company. Winning this will make them WAY more famous, and hopefully that would speed notch up a bit. on the other hand, Valve is already famous.
-Valve HAVEN'T FINISHED PORTAL 2 YET.
Flame all you want.
BTW, how can I know how many votes every side has? or is it a secret?
Valve hasn't finished Portal 2.. Mojang hasn't even finished Minecraft. Also to a previous point saying Valve has only released Alien Swarm the last year, Mojang, again, hasn't released anything.
So how is Mojang considered a top developer? Well it certainly isn't due to anything beside the game that's still in beta, because that's all they're working on. It could be due to the creativity of Minecraft, which is, again, brilliant. However, remember this game is currently in beta, and things change. A released product is ALL that matters in the world, in any aspect. There are games that have been considerably better in their beta versions that flop in their releases. It can't be due to their story-telling, because its non-existant. Although its not a bad thing, it's one thing that's missing. It can't be due to customer service, because it goes as far as directly emailing Notch or an employee himself. It can't be due to their responses to bugs, because its still in beta and there are still plenty of bugs to be worked out.
This is the problem with voting Mojang. Many things are missing not only in Minecraft, but in their company (which, by the way, is what's being voted on). Valve is a leader in just about all the things I've mentioned. The only thing that Mojang has over Valve is Mojang has the benefit of the doubt. No one knows how long Mojang will last, how successful they will be, so they overstate based on how much they *love* Minecraft. Minecraft should only be a part of the decision.
Consider Mojang the company, and what they have done as a company, first. The company hasn't even been around for a year yet. Sorry, but the only reason why Mojang is winning is because of Minecraft and its playerbase, not because Mojang is a good company. Valve has done so much for the PC community people don't realize, with Steam especially, in addition to creating some of the very best and most popular games created. Everything they make is fun, has a lot of character, and polished. Mojang has done nothing final as a company yet, and should be voted as such.
So please, when voting, consider this question: What has Mojang done in their existence, and what has Valve done in their existence? Base your answer on that.

If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch... you must first invent the Universe.
To the people who think voting for him and winning will make Mojang more famous and Notch work harder:
Because winning numerous industry accolades, being on every major gaming site, and being constantly mentioned in news articles isn't enough nor has it spurred his work ethic?
Yeah exactly, the only thing more popularity will accomplish for Mojang and Minecraft are positive reinforcement for Notch to continue his current behavior, and more advertising for his still unfinished game

It's funny how many people are saying this, but we all have to realize sooner or later that the majority of people would rather defend their purchases and conform to the popular choice rather than create a hierarchy of preferences based off of any objective or rational criterion.
Yet another reason why Minecraft's continued profitability is possible

1. Back when Mojang beat Nintendo (which I didn't expect) I though "I expect they'll get all the way to Valve, but there's no way they'll beat Valve. But it looks like they have, which is quite amusing.
2. The number of games Mojang have or haven't released is obviously a valid voting criterion for SOME people, but lots of other people really don't care. So repeatedly pointing out that Mojang haven't released any finished titles is a waste of typing, as the people this is aimed at already know and don't care.

Sssssshepard, the Creepersssss are ~ASssssssssUMING DIRECT CONTROL
Valve is a fantastic company, with some of the best and brightest game developers there are. Each major title they release brings something new and innovative to games each time.
So I'd vote for them if this internet poll wasn't just a giant fanboy fapfest of meaninglessness.
PS: This is a poll based on 2010. Valve really hasn't done much for 2010 besides Alien Swarm. It's Alien Swarm vs Minecraft in short terms
I guess I'd be voting for Valve then, considering Alien Swarm is an actual completed project.
P.S.S.
This is NOT a poll based on 2010. Look at the f**king criteria first before you make your own rules up.
Also, DrKelexo makes an excellent point.
yeah, and even if it was, jesus christ nothing happened with minecraft in 2010 (except its beta now. no gameplaychanges or big bug fixes coming with it, no, just called beta now.)
im actually pretty sure this doesnt help mojang.
They win >> people see that and think 'K LETS BUY IT' >> more sales with no effort from notch >> notch continues his 'sorry, vacations!' stuff.
See, honestly I don't think most of the people here arguing actually care who wins.
I know I really don't care what The Escapist thinks, seeing as how their air of professional journalism somehow sinks below "Let's post pictures of cosplayers as news" Kotaku.
Also LeanderLeet Valve didn't make DoTA. Misinformation up in this ***** from every side, and even after you cut past that ********, all you find is people plugging their ears and screaming "i can't hear you" after they've had their say.
BIOWARE? This set of clowns that made boring, wrong-looking "games"?
Mojang will win. We had 16k voters against Valve. That's a lot of ours voting for Valve.

Yea but those "games" also won more than several game of the year awards, have hundreds of hours of dialogue, actual characters, actual stories, etc. whereas Minecraft has 14 year olds spewing mental diarrhea on an internet forum and bugs that will never be fixed
I don't necessarily approve of everything Bioware's done (cough cough Sonic RPG Dragon Age 2 cough) but if you seriously think that Mojang is more professional or skilled than them you're delusional and even the sycophantic buttsucking internet media would agree with that conclusion. Bioware not only won by a larger margin than Mojang did, but it was against Blizzard, aka the most overrated developer on the market, so I wouldn't be so sure that some fat nerds making 16x16x16 voxels in their musty office in Sweden are going to beat them.

Don't really like any bioware games but it's worth signing up to that shitty forum just to make sure mojang don't win.
As a developer Mojang did not deserve to get past Valve. In their short time here they have started developing minecraft and scrolls. The only thing that is interesting about them is that they have all company members on twitter but then even that is not unique.
They are poorly managed, have terrible PR and marketing, and have yet to release a complete game. To say they are a better developer than Bioware is insane! If your voting purely on the fact that you like championing something then fair enough go for it but surely if you look at it objectively you cannot really say that as a games studio Mojang is better than Bioware..
I really can't put it better than this. Mojang winning anything in this category is beyond stupid.

Bioware beating Blizzard... well that was my hardest choice, so it coulda gone either way, but Mojang beating Valve? WHAT THE ****?
