Now, before you flame this thread, at least readALLof it.
I host an offline server that my brother and I use to play Minecraft,
Originally I gave him my username and password, and had him log out,
and click play offline.
His name would show "Player" when he would join the server.
Later, I bought him Minecraft for his birthday.
My sister want's to play now, but I don't have the money to buy
her a game she might not even play.
so we use the same method as before.
I have her click the play offline option that appears when she types
the wrong information.
But, she want's to have a custom name, Anyone who has a younger sister
can understand how annoying they can get when they don't get what they wan't.
So, Is there a way I could change her in-game name when she joins?
just buy her a account or go halves with her on it its worth it and im sure she will get addicted to minecraft and want a proper acount in the near furter lol
I Don't wan't to spend money on something she might hate.
I know there is a way to do change her name, I used Google, but found nothing.
I am asking how.
Oh, and I typed in this when I used Google:
"minecraft how to play an offline server with a custom name"
and
"minecraft how to play an offline server with a name"
Obviously she's already pirating the game and playing it. She wants her own name.
So she'll continue playing it after the purchase or this would not be an issue.

She isn't pirating, she's playing on my server while it's in offline mode,
a feature in the server software, that was created by notch.
Please flame elsewhere.
It would be pirating if she was using a cracked client,
She is not. she is using the official minecraft client.
If it's a bukkit or hMod server, I believe there is a plugin that can be used with iChat (or iChat itself maybe?) that can be used to rename someone.
My brother is in the same situation, but he's 7 and doesn't know how to craft and to to things beyond destryong and placing blocks. He just wants to play with me so I let him play on my server and it's in offline mode too just for him.
I can easily enough bypass authentication to log into to my own server under whatever name I want, but when I do, my mods quit working. So if I want to fly I have to login normally before my mods will work. I'm assuming by-passing authentication breaks mods or is somehow just not using them. The mods won't work playing single player or multi-player when I run the Minecraft client without authenticating it. This is fine for me, but my daughter has gotten used to using her own name instead of the second 'purchased' account name. I was getting used to logging in as 'Dad' until I decided I wanted to fly and make building tall things easier. Any suggestions?
You bought the game for you and your brother. Your sister wants to play but you don't have money to buy it for her. So your letting her play on your "offline server/client" by using the invalid login method.
BUT, your sister wants her own in-game display name..?
So tell me... are you hosting the "offline server/client" via hamachi or VPN?
Account sharing is most likely against the rules... most likely.

I'm not flaming. Pirating something is not limited to downloading it off the internet. (Ignoring the technicalities with that statement.)
The point was, she wants her own name so it seems like the purchase is sound.

Most of this comment was nothing but flaming,
is Minecraft Community is starting to rot as the game becomes more popular?
Why would the offline feature even be in the server client?
To let people pirate the game as you mindlessly proclaim?
I don't think notch is that stupid.
Tell her to suck it up or not play at all.
You obviously don't have a younger sister.
So this is what i got from your thread....

Its not account sharing, it is not illegal.
I am using the official minecraft server jar.

You think I'm flaming? Funny.
Offline mode was most likely added due to the login server going down so often.

If someone uses the main account while she uses the client 'offline' then it is pirating.
By the logic of playing offline anyone can download the client to play the 'offline' version w/o paying.
You seem like an articulate individual, not a troll, so it may be best to stick with google for this situation.

Most likely this is a virus, this is a PM from Lil_Ryan.
Probably.
I'll check it out when I get home from school.
Did you test it?
It's not a virus, I don't give out viruses and I can supply screenshots of the launcher if you'd like

And I don't see how sharing accounts with family and friends is illegal. Sharing the game over the internet would be a whole different story.
