OK, so I've been thinking about this for a while... What are creepers? What makes them explode? Why are they aggressive? Why don't they burn in sunlight? Why are there no creeper spawners or babies? Do they want hugs? And why the sad face? I don't know, that's why I thought this should be up for debate, am I right?
OK, first of: What are creepers?
Plants? Animals? Mushrooms? Viruses? Or maybe they're like jellyfish; neither?
A plant wouldn't be running around, and it wouldn't spawn in darkness, would it?
An animal would be more plausible, but why blow itself up?
Mushrooms would explain the dark spawning and fit Notches description of them being crunchy.
A virus has been suggested, but IMO, this makes no sense.
Jellyfish are plants that lay eggs. Or something. Would this fit the creeper? Me thinks not.
What makes them explode?
Quite obviously, it's the gunpowder that explodes, but how?
Do they generate heat? That would explain the 1,5s countdown...
Some sort of flint, like a gun?
Other suggestions?
Another thing, what is it that drives them to suicide?

Hey, just this random thought I had: Creepers should travel in packs. It makes no sense for them to blow up at random, if not to protect other members of its family.

I think creepers are a highly evolved planetary defense mechanism against the craftsmen invaders who rip it apart. They are a spore based organism, and contain photosynthetic cells attributing to their greenish color.
The sadface is an illusion, to trick the weaker of the craftsmen who believe that the creature may be docile or sad, or requiring of some form of attention, to weed out the less intelligent of the crafting kin.
When it gets within close proximity, it becomes a biological bomb, detonating itself in an effort to obliterate the craftsmen and spread the spores to spawn more creepers in the surrounding area, thus perpetuating the cycle as long as it can find things to explode upon. They are asexual reproducers most likely, attributing to their nearly identical nature and appearance.

This would require creeper packs.
According to the Minecraft wiki, creepers are pretty smart (ladder climbing, advanced pathfinding, etc), seemingly too smart to commit suicide.
Why don't they burn?
As already established, creepers contain the highly flammable gunpowder. Zombies do not, nor do skeletons. Why do they burn, and not the creeper?
Why the sad face?
No idea. Thoughts?
Please comment, tell me your opinions, and I'll add them! Also, if I have forgotten something/typos, please tell me!
Also, more to come!
I think you would be sad face too if you had no arms and just legs.
I would explode too if my existence was a crunchy leaf who couldn't talk.
